Porphyrin J-aggregates as a probe for chiral impurities as demonstrated by their symmetry breaking by confinement in montmorillonite clay.

In this paper, we demonstrate that chiral J-aggregates of porphyrins are able to detect minute chiral impurities, in this case, the presence of right-handed quartz in acid-activated K10 montmorillonite clay. Aggregation and symmetry breaking of 5,10,15,20-(tetra-4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) and 5,10,15,20-(tetra-4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) were observed upon interaction with acid-activated montmorillonite clay (MMT-K10). A panel of characterization techniques, including UV-visible, electronic circular dichroism, IR, and vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopies, as well as X-ray scattering, were employed to investigate the aggregation of the confined TPPS and TCPP.

Introduction: Venous congestion is a common phenomenon following digital revascularization and replantation. Leech therapy allows for venous outflow while angiogenesis and neovascularization take place. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of leech therapy in the revascularized and replanted digits and determine risk factors for unsuccessful salvage.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a burdensome disorder associated with lower quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. Veterans are particularly at risk for PTSD resulting from experiencing traumatic events during military service. Current treatments for PTSD often fail to remediate symptoms and are associated with high dropout rates; therefore, complementary and integrative health approaches, such as yoga, are being considered to treat PTSD-related symptoms.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common consequence of traumatic injury, yet certain biological factors contributing to PTSD are poorly understood. The gut microbiome may influence mental health outcomes, but its role in heterogeneous PTSD presentations requires elucidation.

Methods: Bacterial composition was examined in adults 2-4 years post-trauma with probable PTSD (n = 24) versus trauma-exposed controls without probable PTSD (n = 24).

Acute and Long-Term Effects of App-Delivered Heartfulness Meditation on Psychological Outcomes and the Endocannabinoid Signaling System in Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome.

Introduction: Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction often triggered by stress. Interventions such as meditation may improve psychological outcomes and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but their efficacy and the underlying mechanism are unknown.

Methods: We conducted a 6-week single-arm pilot study to assess the effects of heartfulness meditation (HFM) in CVS using a custom-designed meditation app.

Recommended measurement instruments for menopausal vasomotor symptoms: the COMMA (Core Outcomes in Menopause) consortium.

Objective: The aim of the study is to identify suitable definitions and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to assess each of the six core outcomes previously identified through the COMMA (Core Outcomes in Menopause) global consensus process relating to vasomotor symptoms: frequency, severity, distress/bother/interference, impact on sleep, satisfaction with treatment, and side effects.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify relevant definitions for the outcome of side-effects and PROMs with acceptable measurement properties for the remaining five core outcomes. The consensus process, involving 36 participants from 16 countries, was conducted to review definitions and PROMs and make final recommendations for the measurement of each core outcome.

Type 2 cannabinoid receptor expression on microglial cells regulates neuroinflammation during graft-versus-host disease.

Neuroinflammation is a recognized complication of immunotherapeutic approaches such as immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment, chimeric antigen receptor therapy, and graft versus host disease (GVHD) occurring after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. While T cells and inflammatory cytokines play a role in this process, the precise interplay between the adaptive and innate arms of the immune system that propagates inflammation in the central nervous system remains incompletely understood. Using a murine model of GVHD, we demonstrate that type 2 cannabinoid receptor (CB2R) signaling plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of neuroinflammation.

Endocannabinoids, cortisol, and development of post-traumatic psychopathological trajectories.

Objective: Our prior published work using the 2-factor model of PTSD identified four subgroups of trauma survivors on average 6 months following trauma: Resilient, Dysphoria, High Comorbid, and Severe Comorbid. Some findings indicate that low and high cortisol responses may increase risk for the development of PTSD and depression respectively, yet ways in which cortisol interacts with other physiological systems to enhance risk is unclear. This study examined the role of circulating eCBs in the development of previously identified psychopathological trajectories that is differentiated by cortisol in traumatically injured adults (N = 169).

Randomized Trial of the Insulin-Only iLet Bionic Pancreas for the Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis- Related Diabetes.

Objective: Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) affects up to 50% of adults with cystic fibrosis and adds significant morbidity and treatment burden. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of automated insulin delivery with the iLet bionic pancreas (BP) in adults with CFRD in a single-center, open-label, random-order, crossover trial.

Research Design And Methods: Twenty participants with CFRD were assigned in random order to 14 days each on the BP or their usual care (UC).

Induced circular dichroism from helicoidal nano substrates to porphyrins: the role of chiral self-assembly.

Because the combination of chiral and magnetic properties is becoming more and more attractive for magneto-chiral phenomena, we here aim at exploring the induction of chirality to achiral magnetic molecules as a strategy for the preparation of magneto-chiral objects. To this end, we have associated free base- and metallo-porphyrins with silica nano helices, using a variety of elaboration methods, and have studied them mainly by electronic natural circular dichroism (NCD) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. While electrostatic or covalent surface grafting uniformly yielded very low induced CD (ICD) for the four assayed porphyrins, a moderate response was observed when the porphyrins were incorporated into the interior of the double-walled helices, likely due to the association of the molecules with the chirally-organized gemini surfactant.

FAAH Inhibition Restores Early Life Stress-Induced Alterations in PFC microRNAs Associated with Depressive-Like Behavior in Male and Female Rats.

Early life stress (ELS) increases predisposition to depression. We compared the effects of treatment with the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor URB597, and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine, on ELS-induced depressive-like behavior and the expression of microRNAs (miRs) associated with depression in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), hippocampal CA1 area, lateral habenula and dorsal raphe in rats. We also examined the mRNA expression of serotonergic ( and ) and endocannabinoid (, and ) targets in the mPFC following ELS and pharmacological treatment.

Multicenter, Randomized Trial of a Bionic Pancreas in Type 1 Diabetes.

Background: Currently available semiautomated insulin-delivery systems require individualized insulin regimens for the initialization of therapy and meal doses based on carbohydrate counting for routine operation. In contrast, the bionic pancreas is initialized only on the basis of body weight, makes all dose decisions and delivers insulin autonomously, and uses meal announcements without carbohydrate counting.

Methods: In this 13-week, multicenter, randomized trial, we randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio persons at least 6 years of age with type 1 diabetes either to receive bionic pancreas treatment with insulin aspart or insulin lispro or to receive standard care (defined as any insulin-delivery method with unblinded, real-time continuous glucose monitoring).
