This paper describes a filled-aperture coherent beam combining (CBC) system based on locking of optical coherence via single-detector electronic-frequency tagging (LOCSET). The sensing and control architecture is implemented using a field-programmable gate array and high-bandwidth electro-optic phase modulators. The all-fiber optical configuration consists of a narrow linewidth 1560 nm seed laser separated into three channels, each containing 7 W erbium-doped fiber amplifiers.

Their versatility and prolific use throughout atomic physics in applications such as absorption spectroscopy and laser cooling makes it imperative for incoming students to gain a firm practical understanding of these lasers. This publication builds upon the seminal work by Wieman, updating components, and providing a video tutorial.

We have measured the Li+CaH→LiH+Ca chemical reaction, observed in both the accelerated disappearance of CaH in the presence of high densities of lithium and in the appearance of the LiH molecule.
