Objective: This study used a virtual environment to examine how older and younger pedestrians responded to simulated augmented reality (AR) overlays that indicated the crossability of gaps in a continuous stream of traffic.
Background: Older adults represent a vulnerable group of pedestrians. AR has the potential to make the task of street-crossing safer and easier for older adults.
Background: Pain is difficult to manage in older adults. It has been recommended that pain management in older adults should include both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic strategies. Unfortunately, nonadherence to pain medication is more prevalent than nonadherence to any other chronic disease treatment.

Aging adults are impacted by pain. Technology can assist older adults with pain self-management while allowing for independence. The current usability study explored the use of voice assistant reminders for two pain self-management tasks in aging adults.

To address this, we developed Eyes-Free Yoga using the Microsoft Kinect that acts as a yoga instructor and has personalized auditory feedback based on skeletal tracking. We conducted two different studies on two different versions of Eyes-Free Yoga: (1) a controlled study with 16 people who are blind or low vision to evaluate the feasibility of a proof-of-concept and (2) an 8-week in-home deployment study with 4 people who are blind or low vision, with a fully functioning exergame containing four full workouts and motivational techniques.

The genetic factors responsible for the variations (or quantitative traits) are largely unknown. We previously identified a gene whose differential expression underlies the natural variation of HSC numbers in C57BL/6 (B6) and DBA/2 (D2) mice.

Clinical goniometry is of limited utility in rigorously assessing limitation of motion and the effectiveness of treatment. We sought to determine (1) whether a validated position-sensing tool, the Kinect, can enable the objective clinical measurement of shoulder motion and (2) the degree to which active range of motion correlates with patient self-assessed shoulder function.

For more than 30 years, researchers have been uncovering novel markers that when used in combination significantly enhance the purification of HSCs from murine and human bone marrow. The complex interface between HSCs, the lymphohematopoietic system, and their niches, has made identification of HSC markers critical to understanding their biological nature, more so than other adult stem cell populations.

Previously we increased the potency of therapeutic antibodies in targeting, induction of apoptosis, and growth inhibition in vitro and in vivo by chemically conjugating a homophilic peptide to the antibody. Here, we describe the construction of a chimeric fusion gene derived from the murine anti-CD20 antibody (1F5) variable region, with an engineered homophilic domain at the C-terminus of the human IgG1 sequence. The construct was expressed in CHO suspension cells and purified.

Its dysregulated expression in other tumors led us to hypothesize that latexin may have tumor suppressor properties in hematological malignancies. We found that latexin was down-regulated in a variety of leukemia and lymphoma cell lines as well as in CD34+ cells from the blood and marrow of patients with these malignancies.

Commercial ZFNs were reported to enhance gene targeting directly in mouse zygotes, whereas similar approaches using publicly available resources have not yet been described. Here we report precise targeted mutagenesis of the mouse genome using Oligomerized Pool Engineering (OPEN) ZFNs.

Wnt proteins control cell survival and cell fate during development. Although Wnt expression is tightly regulated in a spatio-temporal manner, the mechanisms involved both at the transcriptional and translational levels are poorly defined. We have identified a downstream translation initiation codon, AUG(+74), in Wnt13B and Wnt13C mRNAs responsible for the expression of Wnt13 nuclear forms.
