Purpose: Endometrioid endometrial cancer is strongly associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Metformin, an insulin sensitizer, reduces endometrial tumor growth . Presurgical window studies allow rapid assessment of antitumor activity.

Results from preclinical studies in endometrial cancer show that metformin reduces cellular proliferation by inhibition of the PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway. We tested the hypothesis that metformin would reduce cellular proliferation in vivo in atypical endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma.

The aim of this study was to ascertain whether or not unopposed oestrogen reduces the risk of further cardiac events in postmenopausal women who survive a first myocardial infarction.
Methods: The study was a randomised, blinded, placebo controlled, secondary prevention trial of postmenopausal women, age 50-69 years (n=1017) who had survived a first myocardial infarction.
