EBV-Positive Nodal T- and NK-Cell Lymphoma Mimicking Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma: A Case Report.

EBV-positive nodal T- and NK-cell lymphoma (EBV+ NT/NKCL) is a recently recognized entity in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Tumors of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues. Notably, CD30 positivity is frequently observed in (EBV+ NT/NKCL), creating diagnostic challenges to distinguish it from ALK-negative anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Furthermore, cases of EBV+ ALCL have been documented in the literature, predating the inclusion of EBV+ nodal cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma as a variant of peripheral T-cell lymphoma.

Rosai-Dorfman disease of the breast: a clinicoradiologic and pathologic study.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is an uncommon histiocytic disorder typically involving lymph nodes and less frequently extranodal tissues. RDD involving the breast is rare and may clinically and radiologically mimic neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. We report seven patients with breast RDD, describe their clinicoradiologic and pathologic features, and discuss the differential diagnosis.

Significant Variability in the Identification and Reporting of Band Neutrophils by Participants Enrolled in the College of American Pathologists Proficiency Testing Program: Time for a Change.

Context.—: Increased band neutrophils in blood smear differential counts ("bandemia") are entrenched in medicine as a flag for sepsis. However, laboratory hematology experts have long advocated for discontinuation of reporting bands separately from segmented neutrophils because of poor sensitivity and specificity, poor interobserver agreement, and availability of alternative biomarkers for sepsis.

Sudden death in an adolescent due to undiagnosed classic Hodgkin lymphoma.

Few cases of natural sudden death presenting as an undiagnosed lymphoma have been reported in the literature, especially in adolescents. Herein we provide a report of sudden death caused by undiagnosed classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). We describe an 18-year-old female who collapsed after several weeks of weight loss, decreased appetite, and dyspnea.

Thermal squeezing of the seismogenic zone controlled rupture of the volcano-rooted Flores Thrust.

Temperature plays a critical role in defining the seismogenic zone, the area of the crust where earthquakes most commonly occur; however, thermal controls on fault ruptures are rarely observed directly. We used a rapidly deployed seismic array to monitor an unusual earthquake cascade in 2018 at Lombok, Indonesia, during which two magnitude 6.9 earthquakes with surprisingly different rupture characteristics nucleated beneath an active arc volcano.

Poorly Cohesive (Signet Ring Cell) Carcinoma of the Ampulla of Vater.

In the ampulla of Vater, carcinomas with "diffuse-infiltrative"/"signet ring cell" morphology, designated as "poorly cohesive carcinoma" (PCC) in the WHO classification, are very rare and poorly characterized. Nine cases with a classical PCC morphology constituting >50% of the tumor were identified. Mean age was 64.

Molecular and Cytogenetic Education in Hematopathology Fellowship.

Objectives: Given the increased complexity of molecular and cytogenetic testing (MOL-CG), the Society for Hematopathology Education Committee (SH-EC) was interested in determining what the current expectations are for MOL-CG education in hematopathology (HP) fellowship training.

Methods: The SH-EC sent a questionnaire to HP fellowship program directors (HP-PDs) covering MOL-CG training curricula, test menus, faculty background, teaching, and sign-out roles. These findings were explored via a panel-based discussion at the 2018 SH-EC meeting for HP-PDs.

Human herpesvirus 8-related diseases: Histopathologic diagnosis and disease mechanisms.

The emergence of HIV/AIDS more than three decades ago led to an increased incidence of diseases caused by HHV8 co-infection, particularly Kaposi sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and multicentric Castleman disease. Over time, the development of highly effective AIDS therapies has resulted in a decreased incidence of HHV8-associated entities, which are now more commonly found in patients with undiagnosed and/or untreated AIDS. Due to their rarity, some of these diseases may be difficult to recognize without appropriate clinical information.

We offer a four-category taxonomy of individual output distributions (i.e., distributions of cumulative results): (1) pure power law; (2) lognormal; (3) exponential tail (including exponential and power law with an exponential cutoff); and (4) symmetric or potentially symmetric (including normal, Poisson, and Weibull).

Multimodality Technologies in the Assessment of Hematolymphoid Neoplasms.

Accurate assessment of tissues for hematolymphoid neoplasms requires an integrated multiparameter approach. Although morphologic examination by light microscopy remains the mainstay of initial assessment for hematolymphoid neoplasms, immunophenotypic analysis by immunohistochemistry and/or flow cytometry is essential to determine the pattern of differentiation and to detect minimal disease when morphology is inconclusive. In some cases, immunophenotypic analysis provides additional information for targeted immunotherapy and prognostication.

Successful Robotic Excision and Early Chemotherapy for Primary Cardiac Lymphoma.

We present a 67-year-old patient who underwent robotic excision of a mobile left ventricular mass found incidentally on echocardiography. Intraoperative findings revealed a pedunculated mass infiltrating the interventricular septum, and the results of pathologic examination of the frozen section were consistent with malignancy. The final pathologic examination showed a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and early chemotherapy was initiated.

CD30+ Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma: Response to Rotational Total Skin Electron Irradiation.

Introduction: Rotational total skin electron irradiation (RTSEI) is an effective therapy for cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL). CD30 expression has been identified as a prognostic factor in CTCL. Therefore, we investigated CD30 status, treatment response, and survival in our cohort of patients with CTCL treated with RTSEI.

Long-Lived Plasma Cells Are Contained within the CD19(-)CD38(hi)CD138(+) Subset in Human Bone Marrow.

Antibody responses to viral infections are sustained for decades by long-lived plasma cells (LLPCs). However, LLPCs have yet to be characterized in humans. Here we used CD19, CD38, and CD138 to identify four PC subsets in human bone marrow (BM).

The frequency of explosive volcanic eruptions in Southeast Asia.

There are ~750 active and potentially active volcanoes in Southeast Asia. Ash from eruptions of volcanic explosivity index 3 (VEI 3) and smaller pose mostly local hazards while eruptions of VEI ≥ 4 could disrupt trade, travel, and daily life in large parts of the region. We classify Southeast Asian volcanoes into five groups, using their morphology and, where known, their eruptive history and degassing style.

Immunohistochemical detection of p16INK4a in dysplastic lesions of the oral cavity.

Significant intra- and interobserver variability exists in diagnosing and grading oral epithelial dysplasia. Mutations in the tumor-suppressor gene p16 are common in oral cavity dysplastic lesions, but whether immunohistochemical detection of the gene product p16(INK4a) (p16) can be used as a reliable biomarker for dysplasia is unclear. In total, 119 biopsy specimens representing various oral cavity sites and degrees of dysplasia were retrieved from the pathology files of Emory University Hospital.

1D5 and 6F11: An immunohistochemical comparison of two monoclonal antibodies for the evaluation of estrogen receptor status in primary breast carcinoma.

The optimal monoclonal antibody to examine steroid hormone receptor status of primary breast carcinoma has yet to be defined. Estrogen receptor status was evaluated in 592 cases using routinely prepared paraffin-embedded tissue samples from primary breast carcinomas with the 1D5 (DAKO, Carpinteria, CA) and 6F11 (Novocastra, Newcastle upon Tyne, England) monoclonal antibodies. The stains were compared, assessing the percentage of positive cells stained and their intensity.
