The human skin hosts an estimated 1000 bacterial species that are essential for maintaining skin health. Extensive clinical and preclinical studies have established the significant role of the skin microbiome in dermatological disorders such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, diabetic foot ulcers, hidradenitis suppurativa and skin cancers. In these conditions, the skin microbiome is not only altered but, in some cases, implicated in disease pathophysiology.
