After an injury, soft tissue structures in the body undergo a natural healing process through specific phases of healing. Adhesions occur as abnormal attachments between tissues and organs through the formation of blood vessels and/or fibrinous adhesions during the regenerative repair process. In this study, we developed an adhesion-preventing membrane with an improved physical protection function by modifying the surface of chondrocyte-derived extracellular matrices (CECM) with anti-adhesion function.

Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) is a mitochondrial enzyme that plays an important role in both the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain. SDH inactivation is associated with tumorigenesis in certain types of tumor. SDH consists of subunits A, B, C and D (SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD, respectively).

Evaluation of the VE1 Antibody in Thyroid Cytology Using Ex Vivo Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Specimens.

Background: Recently, VE1, a monoclonal antibody against the BRAFV600E mutant protein, has been investigated in terms of its detection of the BRAFV600E mutation. Although VE1 immunostaining and molecular methods used to assess papillary thyroid carcinoma in surgical specimens are in good agreement, evaluation of VE1 in thyroid cytology samples is rarely performed, and its diagnostic value in cytology has not been well established. In present study, we explored VE1 immunoexpression in cytology samples from ex vivo papillary thyroid carcinoma specimens in order to minimize limitations of low cellularity and sampling/targeting errors originated from thyroid fineneedle aspiration and compared our results with those obtained using the corresponding papillary thyroid carcinoma tissues.

VE1 antibody is not highly specific for the BRAF V600E mutation in thyroid cytology categories with the exception of malignant cases.

Objectives: We evaluated the utility of the VE1 antibody that can detect a mutant protein resulting from the BRAF V600E mutation as a diagnostic tool for thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).

Methods: We performed VE1 immunocytochemistry on 202 FNAC specimens from surgically confirmed thyroid nodules. The results were compared with the molecular analyses of the BRAF mutation in these specimens matched with their corresponding histology.

A superficial hyperechoic band in human articular cartilage on ultrasonography with histological correlation: preliminary observations.

Purpose: To demonstrate the superficial hyperechoic band (SHEB) in articular cartilage by using ultrasonography (US) and to assess its correlation with histological images.

Methods: In total, 47 regions of interest (ROIs) were analyzed from six tibial osteochondral specimens (OCSs) that were obtained after total knee arthroplasty. Ultrasonograms were obtained for each OCS.

The significance of caspase-cleaved cytokeratin 18 in pleural effusion.

Background: Apoptosis plays a role in the development of pleural effusion. Caspase-cleaved cytokeratin 18, a marker for epithelial cell apoptosis, was evaluated in pleural effusion.

Methods: A total of 79 patients with pleural effusion were enrolled.

Pathologic diagnosis of recurrent glioblastoma: morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis of 20 paired cases.

To evaluate the prognostic value of the volume of residual viable tumor versus therapy-induced necrosis in resection material and the diagnostic value of ancillary tests in recurrent glioblastoma (GBM), we conducted a retrospective review of 20 patients whose initial and recurrent specimens were available. Recurrent GBMs were graded according to the extent of histopathologic parameters: recurrent tumor with high-grade, non-high-grade, and pure high-grade tumor components and therapy-related necrosis. We also examined MIB-1 labeling, isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 mutation, and epidermal growth factor receptor amplification in primary and recurrent GBMs.

Silencing of homeobox B9 is associated with down-regulation of CD56 and extrathyroidal extension of tumor in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid malignancy, and CD56, a neural cell adhesion molecule, is typically down-regulated in almost all cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Homeobox B9 is a transcription factor, belongs to the products of the homeobox transcription factor gene family, and has been known to regulate transcription of CD56 and to promote tumorigenicity and metastasis in some malignancies. In this study, we investigated the expression and relation of homeobox B9 to reduced expression of CD56 in papillary thyroid carcinomas and also a relationship between their expression and clinicopathologic parameters.

Epithelial apoptosis as a clinical marker in idiopathic interstitial pneumonia.

Backgrounds: Epithelial cell apoptosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP).

Methods: Serum levels of caspase-cleaved cytokeratin-18 (M30) were measured in 55 patients with IIP and 34 healthy controls using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The IIP cases included usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP; n = 30), nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP; n = 15), and cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP; n = 10).

Clinical usefulness of the fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET maximal standardized uptake value (SUV) in combination with CT features for the differentiation of adenocarcinoma with a bronchioloalveolar carcinoma from other subtypes of non-small cell lung cancers.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET maximal SUV in combination with CT features for differentiation of adenocarcinoma with bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) from other subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 125 patients (104 men and 21 women; mean age, 64 years) who underwent CT and subsequent FDG-PET examinations for preoperative evaluation and underwent curative intent operation with the final diagnoses of NSCLC made by surgical histopathology. We categorized NSCLC into adenocarcinoma with BAC feature and other subtypes.

Diagnostic performance of (18)F-FDG PET/CT for lymph node staging in patients with operable non-small-cell lung cancer and inflammatory lung disease.

As (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is taken up by inflammatory lymph nodes, it could be falsely interpreted as metastasis. Therefore, we evaluated the diagnostic ability of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for lymph node staging of lung cancer when inflammatory lung disease coexisted. Patients with operable non-small-cell lung cancer and FDG-avid lymph nodes were retrospectively classified into two groups; those with inflammatory lung disease (ILD) and those without it (NILD).

A probable case of oral bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw and recovery with parathyroid hormone treatment.

Introduction: Bisphosphonates are effective for treating osteoporosis, Paget's disease of bone, and malignancy-associated bone diseases. Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a rare but serious adverse effect of bisphosphonate therapy. Due to inhibitory actions on bone turnover, bisphosphonate therapy may result in the accumulation of microdamage.

Primary pulmonary malignant fibrous histiocytoma mimics pulmonary artery aneurysm with partial thrombosis: various radiologic evaluations.

Primary pulmonary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is very rare, so only a few imaging features have been reported. We report one case of rapidly growing primary pulmonary MFH mimicking a partially thrombosed pulmonary artery aneurysm and its radiologic findings, including multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT), conventional angiography, and fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography CT ([18F] FDG-PET/CT). On multi-phasic MDCT, this mass mimicked a pulmonary artery aneurysm with partial thrombosis.

The characteristics of incidental pituitary microadenomas in 120 Korean forensic autopsy cases.

To investigate the characteristics of incidental pituitary microadenomas, we examined 120 pituitary glands from Korean forensic autopsy cases, from which eight tumors were identified (incidence 6.7%). The average age of the affected subjects was 50 yr (range: 33-96 yr) with a female predominance.

Automation of gross photography using a remote-controlled digital camera system.

Context: Conventional gross photography requires a series of tedious and time-consuming steps, including taking, developing, labeling, sorting, filing, and tracking numerous photographs.

Objective: To describe how to automate the gross photographic process by way of controlling a digital camera remotely.

Design: After defining the requirements of automation regarding gross photography, a remote control board, foot switch, barcode system, and image retrieval system were devised.

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the kidney.

Primary renal malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a rare tumor of the kidney. It is clinically and radiologically indistinguishable from a renal cell carcinoma. Even following radical surgery, the tumor shows a strong predilection for local recurrence and the prognosis is generally poor.

Focal hematopoietic hyperplasia of the rib.

We report a case of focal hematopoietic hyperplasia in the rib of a 24-year-old woman. This is only the fourth case to be reported in the English literature, all of which have involved the rib. Radiologically they all manifested as an expansive and radiolucent lesion and contained ill-defined areas of increased density or calcification.
