  • Androgen receptor targeted agents (ARTA) are increasingly used in prostate cancer treatments, leading to improved survival but also heightened concerns over cardiovascular side effects.
  • A meta-analysis revealed that ARTA significantly increases the incidence of cardiac-related issues, such as hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, and arrhythmia, but does not seem to raise the rates of cardiac arrests or deaths.
  • Understanding these risks helps inform better management strategies for patients on ARTA, potentially involving cardiologists to monitor heart health closely.

A considerable portion of the opioid epidemic has been driven by physician-prescribed opioids for pain management. Thus, policies to address the epidemic must consider not only the resources available to manage addiction but those to manage acute and chronic pain as well. For the period 2017 to 2019, the authors sought to describe the distribution, by state, of indicators of the supply of resources to address pain and addiction (graduate medical education subspecialty training in pain and addiction, number of board-certified pain and addiction specialists, number of opioid treatment centers), as well as indicators of the demands for those services (opioid prescriptions, opioid overdose deaths), to identify states that seem to suffer from a mismatch between supply and demand.

Vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), homovanillic acid (HVA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) are classical tumor markers and are used as standard clinical evaluations for patients with neuroblastoma (NB). Minimal residual disease (MRD) can be monitored by quantifying several sets of NB-associated mRNAs in the bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) of patients with NB. Although MRD in BM and PB has been revealed to be a strong prognostic factor that is independent of standard clinical evaluations, its interrelation with tumor markers remains uncharacterized.

Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children and originates from sympathoadrenal or Schwann cell precursors derived from neural crest. These neural crest derivatives also constitute the hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells in bone marrow (BM) that is the most frequent site of NB metastasis and relapse. In NB patients, NB cells have been pathologically detected in BM and peripheral blood (PB), and minimal residual disease (MRD) in BM and PB (BM-MRD and PB-MRD) can be monitored by quantitating several sets of NB-associated mRNAs (NB-mRNAs).

Murid and cricetid rodents were previously believed to be the principal reservoir hosts of hantaviruses. Recently, however, multiple newfound hantaviruses have been discovered in shrews, moles, and bats, suggesting a complex evolutionary history. Little is known about the genetic diversity and geographic distribution of the prototype shrew-borne hantavirus, (TPMV), carried by the Asian house shrew (), which is widespread in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Monitoring of several sets of neuroblastoma-associated mRNAs (NB-mRNAs) by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) can be used to evaluate minimal residual disease in NB patients. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) is an adaption of qPCR that potentially provides simpler and more reproducible detection of low levels of mRNAs. However, whether minimal residual disease in NB patients can be monitored by ddPCR using a set of NB-mRNAs is not yet tested.

The discovery of highly divergent lineages of hantaviruses (family ) in shrews, moles, and bats of multiple species raises the possibility that non-rodent hosts may have played a significant role in their evolutionary history. To further investigate this prospect, total RNA was extracted from RNAlater-preserved lung tissues of 277 bats (representing five families, 14 genera and 40 species), captured in Myanmar and Vietnam during 2013⁻2016. Hantavirus RNA was detected in two of 15 black-bearded tomb bats () and two of 26 Pomona roundleaf bats () in Myanmar, and in three of six ashy leaf-nosed bats () in Vietnam.
