Leptin and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) are two extensively studied biomarkers associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and osteoarthritis (OA). Previous studies have mostly focused on either MetS or OA alone, with no available data on Vietnamese patients. This study aimed to investigate the levels of leptin and IL-1β in this patient population and explore their association with clinical parameters of MetS and OA.

Multiple myeloma is a deadly cancer that is a complex and multifactorial disease. In the present study, 12 belinostat derivatives (four resynthesized and eight new), HDAC inhibitors, were resynthesized either Knoevenagel condensation, or Wittig reaction, or Heck reaction. Then an evaluation of the antiproliferative activities against myeloma cells MOPC-315 was carried out.

Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated that autophagy plays a vital role in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Interestingly, several anticancer agents were found to exert their anticancer effects by triggering autophagy. Emerging data suggest that autophagy represents a novel mechanism that can be exploited for therapeutic benefit.

An essential oil extract, derived from the rhizome of Curcuma wenyujin (CWE), possesses antioxidative, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, it remains unknown how exactly CWE inhibits tumor growth. In this study, using human cervical cancer HeLa cells, the authors postulated that CWE has the ability to inhibit tumor growth.

Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) belongs to a family of evolutionarily conserved zinc finger-containing transcription factors. It has been shown to mediate self renewal and pluripotency, regulate adipogenesis and play a critical role in monocyte differentiation. KLF4 is also highly expressed in squamous cell carcinomas and in 70% of all primary human breast cancers, suggesting a putative role for KLF4 as being an oncogene and as an antiapoptotic factor.

Raman spectra of germanosilicate core fibers before and after UV irradiation were investigated. Significant changes of the Raman spectra after irradiation indicate transformation of the glass structure. A possible interpretation of the observed changes is proposed.

The influence of drawing tension on the formation of Bragg gratings in B-Ge- and Sn-Ge-codoped core fibers is investigated by transmission and stress measurements. With increasing drawing tension, the axial stress is reduced in the B-Ge-codoped core but increased in the Sn-Ge-codoped core. A higher drawing tension leads to a photosensitivity enhancement and an increase of the core stress during the grating formation in B-Ge-codoped fibers.

Reactive oxygen species are a major cause of damage occurring in ischemic tissue after reperfusion. During reperfusion transitional metals such as iron are required for reactive oxygen species to mediate their major toxic effects. Xanthine oxidase is an important source of reactive oxygen species during ischemia-reperfusion injury, but not in all organs or species.

Studies were designed to explore the possibility that sulfated polysaccharides had the potential to prevent human leukocyte elastase (HLE)-induced lung injury. Arteparon (GAGPS), heparin, heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and dextran sulfate, but not dextran, inhibited HLE-mediated hydrolysis of succinyl-ala2-val-pNA. GAGPS, used as a paradigmatic sulfated polysaccharide, was a potent inhibitor of elastolysis in vitro.
