Emerging evidence suggests that cancer cells may disseminate early, prior to the formation of traditional macro-metastases. However, the mechanisms underlying the seeding and transition of early disseminated cancer cells (DCCs) into metastatic tumors remain poorly understood. Through single-cell RNA sequencing, we show that early lung DCCs from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) exhibit a trophoblast-like 'tumor implantation' phenotype, which enhances their dissemination and supports metastatic growth.

Advancements in optical coherence control have unlocked many cutting-edge applications, including long-haul communication, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and optical coherence tomography. Prevailing wisdom suggests that using more coherent light sources leads to enhanced system performance and device functionalities. Tumor protein p63 isoform ΔNp63 plays roles in the squamous epithelium and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), including esophageal SCC (ESCC). By integrating data from cell lines and our latest patient-derived organoid cultures, derived xenograft models, and clinical sample transcriptomic analyses, we identified a novel and robust oncogenic role of ΔNp63 in ESCC. We showed that ΔNp63 maintains the repression of cancer cell endogenous retrotransposon expression and cellular double-stranded RNA sensing.

The Head and Neck Cancer International Group (HNCIG) has undertaken an international modified Delphi process to reach consensus on the essential data variables to be included in a minimum database for HNC research. Endorsed by 19 research organisations representing 34 countries, these recommendations provide the framework to facilitate and harmonise data collection and sharing for HNC research.
