Article Synopsis
  • Acute gastrointestinal dilation is a condition where the stomach and intestines become overstretched due to excessive gas, which is rarely seen in laboratory monkeys.
  • Two rhesus monkeys at the Korea National Primate Research Center experienced this condition; one died suddenly after anesthesia, while the other died after treatment, with necropsies revealing severe lung and intestinal congestion.
  • The presence of non-gas-forming bacteria in their gastrointestinal contents suggests that the condition was likely caused by a combination of factors, including diet, anesthesia, and excessive water intake, rather than an infection by gas-producing bacteria.
