The concept of randomized neural networks (RNNs), such as the random vector functional link network (RVFL) and extreme learning machine (ELM), is a widely accepted and efficient network method for constructing single-hidden layer feedforward networks (SLFNs). Due to its exceptional approximation capabilities, RNN is being extensively used in various fields. While the RNN concept has shown great promise, its performance can be unpredictable in imperfect conditions, such as weight noises and outliers.

The coiled-coil alpha-helical rod protein 1 (CCHCR1) was first identified as a candidate gene in psoriasis and has lately been found to be associated with a wide range of clinical conditions including COVID-19. CCHCR1 is located within P-bodies and centrosomes, but its exact role in these two subcellular structures and its transcriptional control remain largely unknown. Here, we showed that CCHCR1 shares a bidirectional promoter with its neighboring gene, TCF19.

Improvement in Swallowing Function in Patients with Previous Irradiation for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma by Expiratory Muscle Strength Training.

Dysphagia and chronic aspiration are common post-irradiation complications in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) survivors. Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST) is a simple device-driven exercise therapy for swallowing training. This study investigates the effectiveness of EMST in a group of post-irradiated NPC patients.

Diagnostic Yield of Exome Sequencing in Fetuses with Sonographic Features of Skeletal Dysplasias but Normal Karyotype or Chromosomal Microarray Analysis: A Systematic Review.

Skeletal dysplasias are a group of diseases characterized by bone and joint abnormalities, which can be detected during prenatal ultrasound. Next-generation sequencing has rapidly revolutionized molecular diagnostic approaches in fetuses with structural anomalies. This review studies the additional diagnostic yield of prenatal exome sequencing in fetuses with prenatal sonographic features of skeletal dysplasias.

Incidence of neonatal sepsis after universal antenatal culture-based screening of group B streptococcus and intrapartum antibiotics: A multicentre retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To compare the incidences of early and late-onset neonatal sepsis, including group B streptococcus (GBS) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) before and after implementation of universal screening and intrapartum antibiotics prophylaxis (IAP).

In this publication, the use of a dielectric paste for dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) design is investigated. The dielectric paste can serve as an alternative approach of manufacturing a dielectric resonator antenna by subsequently filling a mold with the dielectric paste. The dielectric paste is obtained by mixing nanoparticle sized barium strontium titanate (BST) powder with a silicone rubber.

Hypomanic symptoms in early pregnancy: prevalence and associated factors.

Given that the perinatal period is a time of increased risk for pregnant women to manifest mental health problems, the identification of antenatal hypomanic symptoms is particularly important. However, data on antenatal hypomanic symptoms is lacking. The present study was aimed at filling this research gap by investigating the prevalence of hypomanic symptoms, including the "active-elated" and "irritable/risk-taking" sides of hypomanic symptoms at the first trimester, and examining their associations with anxiety and depressive symptoms at the following time points: the first trimester, the second trimester, and up to 6-week postpartum.

The KLHL40 c.1516A>C is a Chinese-specific founder mutation causing nemaline myopathy 8: Report of six patients with pre- and postnatal phenotypes.

Background: Autosomal recessive or compound heterozygous mutations in KLHL40 cause nemaline myopathy 8, which is one of the most severe forms of nemaline myopathy. The KLHL40 c.1516A>C variant has recently been reported as a founder mutation in southern Chinese.

Orbital angular momentum radiator multiplexing electromagnetic waves in free space.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes of electromagnetic (EM) waves have been extensively studied to obtain more than two independent channels at a single frequency. Thus far, however, multiple radiators have been used to achieve this goal in wireless communications. For the first time, a single radiator was designed to simultaneously transmit three OAM waves in free space at the same frequency.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of chromosomal microarray as a primary test for prenatal diagnosis in Hong Kong.

Background: Chromosomal microarray (CMA) has been shown to be cost-effective over karyotyping in invasive prenatal diagnosis for pregnancies with fetal ultrasound anomalies. Yet, information regarding preceding and subsequent tests must be considered as a whole before the true cost-effectiveness can emerge. Currently in Hong Kong, karyotyping is offered free as the standard prenatal test while genome-wide array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH), a form of CMA, is self-financed.

Associations of body dissatisfaction with anxiety and depression in the pregnancy and postpartum periods: A longitudinal study.

Background: Pregnancy is a time of increasing vulnerability to the development of body dissatisfaction, anxiety, and depression. The present study aims to examine associations of body dissatisfaction with anxiety and depression at the following points: 6 months before pregnancy (retrospective report); in the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy; and up to 6 weeks postpartum.

Methods: A prospective longitudinal design with a quantitative approach was adopted.

It is difficult to prenatally identify 5p deletion (-) syndrome. Here, we report five cases of 5p- syndrome diagnosed by invasive prenatal diagnosis. Of them, three had a small cerebellum in the second trimester.

Prenatal sonography of placental abscess and prolonged antibiotic treatment for bacteremia.

Termination of pregnancy is indicated for bacteremia, a major cause of mortality. Our present case was highly challenging because the patient wished to continue with her pregnancy, and the ultrasonography showed features of a placental abscess. Although the outcomes were good after prolonged antibiotic treatment, this was an exceptional case.

An animal model of co-existing sarcopenia and osteoporotic fracture in senescence accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8).

Sarcopenia and osteoporotic fracture are common aging-related musculoskeletal problems. Recent evidences report that osteoporotic fracture patients showed high prevalence of sarcopenia; however, current clinical practice basically does not consider sarcopenia in the treatment or rehabilitation of osteoporotic fracture. There is almost no report studying the relationship of the co-existing of sarcopenia and osteoporotic fracture healing.

Cross-cultural industrial organizational psychology and organizational behavior: A hundred-year journey.

In celebration of the anniversary of the (), we take a hundred-year journey to examine how the science of cross-cultural industrial/organizational psychology and organizational behavior (CCIO/OB) has evolved, both in and in the larger field. We review broad trends and provide illustrative examples in the theoretical, methodological, and analytic advances in CCIO/OB during 4 main periods: the early years (1917-1949), the middle 20th century (1950-1979), the later 20th century (1980-2000), and the 21st century (2000 to the present). Within each period, we discuss key historical and societal events that influenced the development of the science of CCIO/OB, major trends in research on CCIO/OB in the field in general and in particular, and important milestones and breakthroughs achieved.

The effect of telephone-based cognitive-behavioural therapy on parenting stress: A randomised controlled trial.

There are limited studies about the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy delivered by telephone in reducing parenting stress. The present study investigates the effect of telephone-based cognitive-behavioural therapy on parenting stress at six weeks and six months postpartum.

The Immunomodulatory Activity of Jacaric Acid, a Conjugated Linolenic Acid Isomer, on Murine Peritoneal Macrophages.

This study aims at demonstrating the immunomodulatory property of jacaric acid, a conjugated linolenic acid (CLNA) isomer that is present in jacaranda seed oil, on murine peritoneal macrophages. Our results showed that jacaric acid exhibited no significant cytotoxicity on the thioglycollate-elicited murine peritoneal macrophages as revealed by the neutral red uptake assay, but markedly increased their cytostatic activity on the T-cell lymphoma MBL-2 cells as measured by the fluorometric CyQuant® NF Cell Proliferation Assay Kit. Flow cytometric analysis indicated that jacaric acid could enhance the endocytic activity of macrophages and elevated their intracellular production of superoxide anion.

Anti-allergic effect of the naturally-occurring conjugated linolenic acid isomer, jacaric acid, on the activated human mast cell line-1.

The present study aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effect of jacaric acid, a naturally-occurring conjugated linolenic acid isomer that can be found in jacaranda seed oil, on the activated human mast cell line-1 (HMC-1). Our previous studies have demonstrated that jacaric acid only exerted minimal, if any, cytotoxicity on normal murine cells. In the present study, jacaric acid at concentrations ≤100 µM did not exhibit direct cytotoxicity on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells after 72 h of incubation, as determined by the MTT reduction assay.

A Fetus with Hb Bart's Disease Due to Maternal Uniparental Disomy for Chromosome 16.

We here report an unusual case of Hb Bart's (γ4) disease. Thalassemia screening of a couple showed that the wife was an α(0)-thalassemia (α(0)-thal) carrier and her husband's mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was normal. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) was performed at 13 weeks' gestation for positive Down syndrome screening and chromosomal study of the cultured CVS showed a normal karyotype.

Jacaric acid inhibits the growth of murine macrophage-like leukemia PU5-1.8 cells by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

Background: Conjugated linolenic acids (CLN) refer to the positional and geometric isomers of octadecatrienoic acids with three conjugated double bonds (C18:3). Previous researches have demonstrated that CLN can inhibit the growth of a wide variety of cancer cells, whereas the modulatory effect of CLN on various myeloid leukemia cells remains unclear. This study aims at demonstrating the in vitro anti-tumor effect and action mechanisms of jacaric acid, a CLN isomer which is present in jacaranda seed oil, on the murine macrophage-like leukemia PU5-1.
