Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma Mimicking Stroke and Its Outcome post Intravenous Thrombolysis.

Background And Purpose: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a rare neurological emergency. Its presentation, depending on location of hematoma, could mimic stroke. While intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is recommended to commence as early as possible in case of acute ischemic stroke, it is likely that it could be given to SSEH patients.

Background: Use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) is common and significantly reduces stroke occurrence. Yet little is known about patients who have a stroke despite treatment.

Methods: We prospectively recruited patients with acute ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack attributed to high-grade ICAD (60%-99% stenosis).

De novo status epilepticus is associated with adverse outcome: An 11-year retrospective study in Hong Kong.

Purpose: To identify predictors of poor clinical outcome in patients presenting to the intensive care units with status epilepticus (SE), in particular for patients presenting with de novo status epileptics.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed on patients admitted to the intensive care units with status epilepticus in two hospitals in Hong Kong over an 11-year period from 2003 to 2013.

Results: A total of 87 SE cases were analyzed.

The role of the Ala746Thr variant in the ATP13A2 gene among Chinese patients with Parkinson's disease.

The association between idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and the ATP13A2 (PARK9) Ala746Thr variant, associated with Kufor-Rakeb syndrome, is controversial. We investigated this association in 69 patients with early onset PD (EOPD; ≦50 years of age), 192 patients with late onset PD (LOPD; >50 years of age), and 180 healthy controls in the Chinese population in Hong Kong. The presence of the Ala746Thr variant in the ATP13A2 locus was examined in all participants.

Effects of valproate or lamotrigine monotherapy on the reproductive endocrine and insulin-related metabolic profile in Chinese adults with epilepsy: a prospective randomized study.

Cross-sectional studies have suggested that valproate treatment may be associated with hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenism in women. Few prospective data are available. We evaluated the reproductive endocrine and insulin-related metabolic parameters in men and women with untreated epilepsy randomized to valproate (n=44) or lamotrigine (n=37) monotherapy for 12 months.
