To effectively characterize natural zeolite powder (ZP) and faujasite zeolite (FAU) as adsorbents to remove a wide variety of organic micropollutants, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for the adsorption of zeolites were developed. For this purpose, batch isotherms were performed to measure the adsorption affinity (K) between zeolite and organic micropollutants, and the measured K values were used as a dependent variable in the QSAR modeling. In the modeling, the concept of a linear free energy relationship (LFER) was employed and used either empirically measured or in silico calculated descriptors.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been identified as a major risk factor for mortality after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the long-term risk of ischemic stroke associated with new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) in ACS remains controversial, and its gender-specific association is unknown.

Methods: We analyzed the data of 10,137 ACS survivors included in a multicenter, prospective registry for Korean patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) between January 2004 and August 2014.

Vasospastic angina (VA) is a functional disease of the coronary artery and occurs in an angiographically normal coronary artery. However, it may also occur with coronary artery stenosis. We investigated the effect of coronary artery stenosis on clinical outcomes in VA patients.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase-interacting multifunctional protein 3 (AIMP3), a tumor suppressor, mediates a progeroid phenotype in mice by downregulating lamin A. We investigated whether AIMP3 induces laminopathy and senescence of human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) and is associated with vascular aging in mice and humans in line with decreased lamin A expression. Cellular senescence was evaluated after transfecting HASMCs with AIMP3.

Plastics have multiple applications in disposable products, high-end technology parts, etc., owing to their functionality and manufacturing flexibility. However, their increased use has increased the global proportion of plastic wastes, which creates a serious environmental issue, thereby, creating a demand for plastic waste management techniques.

Struvite precipitation is an effective method to remove and recover ammonia and phosphate from livestock wastewater. Struvite has properties similar to those of the traditional ammonium-phosphate fertilizer, which does not burn the roots owing to its slow-release characteristics. Struvite is an effective fertilizer as its nutrient-releasing rate is very slow.

This study presents co-hydrothermal treatment of primary sludge (PS) from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and Chlorella sp., cultivated using WWTP effluent, and feasibility of using produced hydrochar as solid fuel. The results showed that properties of PS were improved through blending with Chlorella sp.

The aim of this work was to study the characterized hydrochar of algal biomass to produce solid fuel though hydrothermal carbonization. Hydrothermal carbonization conducted at temperatures ranging from 180 to 270 °C with a 60 min reaction improved the upgrading of the fuel properties and the dewatering of wet-basis biomasses such as algae. The carbon content, carbon recovery, energy recovery, and atomic C/O and C/H ratios in all the hydrochars in this study were improved.

The goal of this study was to characterize microbial communities in anaerobic batch digesters treating different representative organic sources (sewage sludge, food waste, septage). Among the digesters, the anaerobic digester of food waste had the highest methanogen density, producing a peak value methane yield of 813.2mLCH4/gVS.

The filamentous alga Hydrodictyon reticulatum harvested from a bench-scale wastewater treatment pond was used to evaluate biogas production after ultrasound pretreatment. The effects of ultrasound pretreatment at a range of 10-5000 J/mL were tested with harvested H. reticulatum.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether single or combined radio frequency (RF) radiation exposure has effects on the cell cycle and its regulatory proteins. Exposure of MCF7 cells to either single (837 MHz) or combined (837 and 1950 MHz) RF radiation was conducted at specific absorption rate values of 4 W/kg for 1 h. During the exposure period, the chamber was made isothermal by circulating water through the cavity.
