Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a vascular neoplasm characterized by abnormal angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Here, we present a case of a 19-month-old male with KHE of the right leg with bony involvement who was initially misdiagnosed with infantile hemangioma. Due to its heterogeneous presentation and frequent occurrence of comorbidities such as Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon, clinical and pathological correlation is essential for diagnosis of KHE.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) have attracted great attention not only for therapeutic applications but also as an alternative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent that helps visualize liver tumors during MRI-guided stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). SPION can provide functional imaging of liver parenchyma based upon its uptake by the hepatic resident macrophages or Kupffer cells with a relative enhancement of malignant tumors that lack Kupffer cells. However, the radiomodulating properties of SPION on liver macrophages are not known.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on identifying risk factors for blood transfusions in patients undergoing single-level anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), a common spinal surgery that often requires transfusions due to complications like infections and adverse reactions.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 4,792 patients who underwent this surgery between 2005 and 2018, using various statistical tests to pinpoint factors that increase the likelihood of needing a transfusion within 72 hours after the procedure.
  • Key risk factors identified include age over 60, previous transfusions, longer surgical times, higher ASA classifications, and specific preoperative hematocrit levels, which can help in better managing patients before surgery.

Introduction: Spondylolysis and isthmic spondylolisthesis are commonly implicated as organic causes of low back pain in this population. Many patients involved in sports that require repetitive hyperextension of the lumbar spine like diving, weightlifting, gymnastics and wrestling develop spondylolysis and isthmic spondylolisthesis. While patients are typically asymptomatic in mild forms, the hallmark of symptoms in more advanced disease include low back pain, radiculopathy, postural changes and rarely, neurologic deficits.

The use of super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) as an MRI contrast agent (SPION-CA) can safely label hepatic macrophages and be localized within hepatic parenchyma for T2*- and R2*-MRI of the liver. To date, no study has utilized the R2*-MRI with SPIONs for quantifying liver heterogeneity to characterize functional liver parenchyma (FLP) and hepatic tumors. This study investigates whether SPIONs enhance liver heterogeneity for an auto-contouring tool to identify the voxel-wise functional liver parenchyma volume (FLPV).
