Article Synopsis
  • Lower oxygen concentrations during anesthetic induction in pediatric patients show less atelectasis right after induction compared to 100% oxygen.
  • A study involving 54 children undergoing elective surgeries found that while 60% oxygen resulted in fewer affected lung regions post-induction, there were no significant differences by the end of the surgery.
  • The findings suggest that while lower oxygen levels can reduce atelectasis formation initially, this protective effect does not persist throughout the surgery, and 80% oxygen doesn't significantly prevent atelectasis when compared to 100%.

Systemic lidocaine can provide satisfactory post-operative analgesia in adults. In this study, we assessed whether intravenous lidocaine is effective for post-operative analgesia and recovery in children undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. A total of 66 children aged from six months to less than six years were classified in either the lidocaine (L) or control (C) groups.

Although the application of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) can alter cardiopulmonary physiology during one-lung ventilation (OLV), these changes have not been clearly elucidated. This study assessed the effects of different levels of PEEP on biventricular function, as well as pulmonary oxygenation during OLV. Thirty-six lung cancer patients received one PEEP combination of six sequences, consisting of 0 (PEEP_0), 5 (PEEP_5), and 10 cmHO (PEEP_10), using a crossover design during OLV.

Background: The effect of the systemic lidocaine on postoperative recovery has not been definitively investigated despite its analgesic efficacy after surgery. The aim of this randomized, double-blinded, controlled study was to evaluate the effect of intravenously administered lidocaine on the quality of recovery and on acute and chronic postoperative pain after robot-assisted thyroidectomy.

Methods: Ninety patients who were undergoing robotic thyroidectomy were randomly assigned to the lidocaine or the control groups.

Background: In patients undergoing pituitary surgery using a transsphenoidal approach, anesthesia emergence should be smooth with minimal coughing. Recent studies demonstrated that a target-controlled infusion of remifentanil effectively suppresses coughing induced by the endotracheal tube. We investigated the EC95 of remifentanil for smooth emergence without coughing from propofol anesthesia in patients undergoing transsphenoidal hypophysectomy.

Background: An intracuff pressure of 80 cm H2 O in the adult-sized laryngeal mask airway Supreme has been recommended to obtain a higher oropharyngeal leak pressure (OLP). However, the intracuff pressure for the higher OLP in the pediatric laryngeal mask airway Supreme could be different from that in the adult-sized laryngeal mask airway Supreme. Thus, we measured and compared OLP at three intracuff pressures of 40, 60, and 80 cm H2 O in the pediatric laryngeal mask airway Supreme.

Background: Evidence for opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) has been shown in animal and human studies, but the clinical implications of this phenomenon remain unclear.

Objectives: We examined whether cancer patients taking opioids differ in their sensitivity to a clinical pain stimulus using a local anesthetic injection compared to those not taking opioids. We also evaluated the effect of the opioid dose, duration of opioid therapy, and patients' pain severity and functional status on this clinical pain stimulus.

The pain around the posterior knee, called 'popliteal fossa', has been known to be caused by a variety of disease entities. Venous malformation is a very rare cause of popliteal area pain, and its diagnosis is frequently delayed, missed, or given incorrectly. Here, we report a case of a patient with popliteal fossa pain for 2 years and was diagnosed as intramuscular venous malformation using ultrasound.

Background: General anesthesia often produces some degree of hypothermia and hypothermia causes much more blood loss during surgery than normothermia. Electrically heated humidifiers (EHHs) have been used for patients under general anesthesia and in the intensive care unit. However, the benefits of the EHH have not been widely reported in the literature.
