Studies into the problems of diagnosing pneumonia in children of the first months of life carried out for many years have shown that pneumonia may be referred to the diseases with indefinite diagnostic criteria. In view of this fact the x-raying of the chest should be regarded as a method of varifying the diagnosis of pneumonia. The roentgenographic findings should be estimated bearing in mind the presence or lack of a syndrome such as bronchial obstruction and the epidemiological anamnesis data.

A total of 66 patients who suffered a severe isolated or concomitant craniocerebral injury were examined. Additionally, a study was made of some indicators of carbohydrate metabolism in the general circulatory bed, acid-base state of the arterialized blood, partial oxygen tension and hemoglobin saturation with arterial blood oxygen. In 10 patients, the same indicators were compared to EEG alterations and the pulse constituent of the finger photoplethysmogram.

The impact of abnormal pentose phosphate pathway of glucose oxidation on the pathogenesis of fetal development arrest in females with incompetent pregnancy was established.

Methods of estimation of the airway resistance by flow-pressure curve obtained in whole-body plethysmography are investigated. The analysis of the physical processes controlling the flow-limitation during expiration shows that these methods are useful only for healthy subjects for the estimation of the airway resistance. The way for estimation of the airway resistance by flow-pressure curve is proposed.

The decrease in the ventilation and blood flow was found in the zone of obstruction by using tracers 133Xe and 99mTc. The pressure rise in the pulmonary artery caused by the spread of bronchial obstruction is one of the factors promoting the redistribution of perfusion into the reserve zones of lungs.

To estimate adrenal function, excretion of 17-ketosteroids, corticoids and their fractions with urine was investigated. The children born in a satisfactory state with a physiological body weight and length demonstrated the lag in the establishment of motor and static functions as well as mental retardation.

The antihypoxic effects of indomethacin, voltaren and ibuprofen were studied experimentally by the parameters of acid-base equilibrium of the blood and the ratio of lactic and pyruvic acids in the blood during chronic hemic and respiratory hypoxia. The results of the studies suggested that indomethacin, voltaren and to a lesser extent ibuprofen in the tested doses (10% LD50) exerted the antihypoxic action that consisted in the improvement of oxygen supply to tissues under conditions of its deficiency, the decrease of incompletely oxidized products of metabolism, the enhancement of hemoglobin synthesis and the ability of voltaren to influence the increase of the number of erythrocytes in the peripheral blood.
