Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration of enol carbamates yields α-boryl carbamates in good enantioselectivity. The enol carbamate starting materials can be prepared with moderate selectivity using a modified Juila olefination and used as an mixture, taking advantage of the faster reactivity of the major isomer in the directed hydroboration. Optically active α-boryl carbamates participate in a Matteson-type homologation with Grignard reagents in which the O-carbamate is substituted with high conservation of optical activity to provide enantioenriched secondary boronic esters.

Aims/hypothesis: Whether hypoglycaemia increases the risk of other adverse outcomes in diabetes remains controversial, especially for hypoglycaemia episodes not requiring assistance from another person. An objective of the Hypoglycaemia REdefining SOLutions for better liVEs (Hypo-RESOLVE) project was to create and use a dataset of pooled clinical trials in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to examine the association of exposure to all hypoglycaemia episodes across the range of severity with incident event outcomes: death, CVD, neuropathy, kidney disease, retinal disorders and depression. We also examined the change in continuous outcomes that occurred following a hypoglycaemia episode: change in eGFR, HbA, blood glucose, blood glucose variability and weight.

NMR spectroscopy studies using parahydrogen-induced polarization have previously established the existence of the pairwise hydrogen addition route in the hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons over heterogeneous catalysts, including those based on rhodium (Rh). This pathway requires the incorporation of both hydrogen atoms from one hydrogen molecule to the same product molecule. However, the underlying mechanism for such pairwise hydrogen addition must be better understood.

Monitoring the spontaneous reconstruction of the surface of metal oxides under electrocatalytic reaction conditions is critical to identifying the active sites and establishing structure-activity relationships. Here, we report on a self-terminated surface reconstruction of Ruddlesden-Popper lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO) that occurs spontaneously during reaction with alkaline electrolyte species. Using a combination of high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM), surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS), as well as electrochemical techniques, we identify the structure of the reconstructed surface layer as an amorphous (oxy)hydroxide phase that features abundant under-coordinated nickel sites.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) onset, progression and outcomes differ substantially between individuals. Multi-omics analyses may allow a deeper understanding of these differences and ultimately facilitate personalised treatments. Here, in an unsupervised "bottom-up" approach, we attempt to group T2D patients based solely on -omics data generated from plasma.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is often viewed as a lifestyle choice rather than a disease, leading to initiatives like the IMI SOPHIA project, which aims to better categorize individuals with obesity based on their disease risk and treatment responses.
  • SOPHIA faces challenges due to siloed clinical cohorts, which limit data sharing for biomarker discovery, but tackles this by using a federated database built on open-source DataSHIELD technology that integrates 16 different data sources.
  • The project allows secure analysis of combined data without revealing individual patient information, demonstrated through a proof-of-concept analysis linking BMI and blood pressure, which showed results similar to traditional meta-analyses, setting a standard for safe collaborative research.

Aims/hypothesis: People with type 2 diabetes are heterogeneous in their disease trajectory, with some progressing more quickly to insulin initiation than others. Although classical biomarkers such as age, HbA and diabetes duration are associated with glycaemic progression, it is unclear how well such variables predict insulin initiation or requirement and whether newly identified markers have added predictive value.

Methods: In two prospective cohort studies as part of IMI-RHAPSODY, we investigated whether clinical variables and three types of molecular markers (metabolites, lipids, proteins) can predict time to insulin requirement using different machine learning approaches (lasso, ridge, GRridge, random forest).

Dopamine decline is suggested to underlie aging-related cognitive decline, but longitudinal examinations of this link are currently missing. We analyzed 5-year longitudinal data for a sample of healthy, older adults (baseline: n = 181, age: 64-68 years; 5-year follow-up: n = 129) who underwent positron emission tomography with C-raclopride to assess dopamine D2-like receptor (DRD2) availability, magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate structural brain measures, and cognitive tests. Health, lifestyle, and genetic data were also collected.

The biomimetic nature of supramolecular systems, the structural similarity of synthetic surfactants to biomolecules (lipids, proteins), provide them with high membranotropy, the ability to overcome biological barriers, and affinity towards biosubstances. Despite rather high toxicity cationic surfactants are of importance as antimicrobial agents, gene nanocarriers and mitochondria targeted ligands. To minimize this limitation, cationic amphiphilic matrix undergoes modification with various functional groups.

Lead compounds are one of the most common pollutants of the workplace air and the environment. In the occupational setting, the sources of their emission, including in nanoscale form, are various technological processes associated with lead smelting and handling of non-ferrous metals and their alloys, the production of copper and batteries. Both lead poisoning and lead exposure without obvious signs of poisoning have a detrimental effect on the cardiovascular system.

Self-organized peptides are unique materials with various applications in biology, medicine, and nanotechnology. Many of these applications require fabrication of homogeneous thin films having high piezoelectric effect and sufficiently low roughness. Recently, a facile method for the controlled deposition of flat solid films of the most studied peptide, diphenylalanine (FF), has been proposed, which is based on the crystallization of FF in the amorphous phase under the action of water vapor.

Lymphatic filariasis is a neglected tropical disease which poses public health concern and socio-economic challenges in developing and low-income countries. In this paper, we formulate a deterministic mathematical model for transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis to generate data by white noise and use least square method to estimate parameter values. The validity of estimated parameter values is tested by Gaussian distribution method.

The xerogels based on the aqueous solutions of urea in potassium silicate liquid glass (PSLG) were produced by CO bubbling and investigated. The structure and chemical composition of the obtained materials were analyzed. Using the SEM, XRD, IR-FT, DSC, and low energy local EDS analysis, it was recognized that the dried gels (xerogels) contained three forms of urea: oval crystals of regular shape appeared onto the surface of xerogel particles; fibrous crystals were located in the silicate matrix; and molecules/ions were incorporated into the silicate matrix.

Site-directed spin labeling followed by investigation using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy is a rapidly expanding powerful biophysical technique to study structure, local dynamics and functions of biomolecules using pulsed EPR techniques and nitroxides are the most widely used spin labels. Modern trends of this method include measurements directly inside a living cell, as well as measurements without deep freezing (below 70 K), which provide information that is more consistent with the behavior of the molecules under study in natural conditions. Such studies require nitroxides, which are resistant to the action of biogenic reductants and have high spin relaxation (dephasing) times, T.

Background: The work proposes a new mathematical model of dynamic processes of a typical spatially heterogeneous biological system, and sets and solves a mathematical problem of modeling the dynamics of the system of neurovascular units of the brain in conditions of ischemic stroke. There is a description of only a small number of mathematical models of stroke in the literature. This model is being studied and a numerical and software implementation of the corresponding mathematical problem is proposed.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) leads to changes in the pump function of the heart and causes right-sided myocardial hypertrophy and heart failure. This study was the first to compare the contractile characteristics of the multicellular myocardial preparations of the right atrium (RA) and right ventricle (RV) of male rats from the control group (CON) and the group with monocrotaline (MCT)-induced hypertrophy at the molecular and multicellular levels. In both RA and RV in MCT-treated rats, the fraction of motile filaments and the maximum sliding velocity of actin and reconstituted thin filaments over myosin decreased, and the ratio of α-/β-myosin heavy chains (MHC) shifted towards β-MHC.
