Testosterone propionate (TP) was supplemented to male rats for assessment of its ameliorating effect on testicular toxicity with thiamphenicol (TAP). A total of 20 male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated orally with TAP at 200 mg/kg/day for up to 4 weeks. In addition, 5 male rats were allotted to the control group receiving vehicle only.

VPs (versatile peroxidases) sharing the functions of LiP (lignin peroxidase) and MnP (manganese peroxidase) have been described in basidiomycetous fungi Pleurotus and Bjerkandera. Despite the importance of this enzyme in polymer degradation, its reactivity with polymeric substrates remains poorly understood. In the present study, we first report that, unlike LiP, VP from Pleurotus ostreatus directly oxidized two polymeric substrates, bovine pancreatic RNase and Poly R-478, through a long-range electron pathway without redox mediators.

Recovery of health related quality of life after radical prostatectomy in japanese men: a longitudinal study.

Background: We performed a longitudinal survey of health related quality of life (HRQOL) after radical retropubic prostatectomy (RP) in Japanese men with localized prostate cancer.

Methods: The present study started with self-reported HRQOL assessments provided by 72 patients who received only RP. The RAND 36-Item Health Survey and the University of California, Los Angeles Prostate Cancer Index were administered before and 3, 6 and 12 months after RP.

Molecular phylogenetic relationships of Eastern Asian Cyprinidae (pisces: cypriniformes) inferred from cytochrome b sequences.

Complete mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences of 54 species, including 18 newly sequenced, were analyzed to infer the phylogenetic relationships within the family Cyprinidae in East Asia. Phylogenetic trees were generated using various tree-building methods, including Neighbor-joining (NJ), Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods, with Myxocyprinus asiaticus (family Catostomidae) as the designated outgroup. The results from NJ and ML methods were mostly similar, supporting some existing subfamilies within Cyprinidae as monophyletic, such as Cultrinae, Xenocyprinae and Gobioninae (including Gobiobotinae).

We investigated the expression of N-cadherin by skeletal muscle during the degeneration and degeneration/regeneration processes using the rat sciatic nerve and gastrocnemius muscle model. The right sciatic nerve was exposed in the mid-thigh region, and the nerve was transsected with small scissors. After then, nerve was sutured (sutured group), or both edges of the resected nerve were turned and sutured to the muscle of each side (unsutured group).

Effects of psychological stress on autonomic control of heart in rats.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of psychological stress on autonomic control of the heart in rats. For this purpose, we evoked anxiety-like or fear-like states in rats by means of classical conditioning and examined changes in autonomic nervous activity using an implanted telemetry system and power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Anxiety-like states resulted in a significant increase in heart rate (HR), low frequency (LF) power, and LF/HF ratio, with no change in high frequency (HF) power.

Effects of pair housing on diurnal rhythms of heart rate and heart rate variability in miniature swine.

This study investigated the effects of pair housing on diurnal rhythms of heart rate and autonomic nervous activity in miniature swine. For this purpose, six adult Göttingen miniature swine were initially housed individually in an animal cage. Then, two of each swine were housed in a large cage together for 3 weeks.

Health related quality of life in Japanese men after radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer.

Background: We performed a retrospective survey of general and disease specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL) after radical prostatectomy (RP) and external beam radiotherapy (XRT) in Japanese men.

Methods: A total of 186 patients underwent RP and 78 underwent XRT for clinically localized prostate cancer between 2000 and 2002. We measured the general and disease specific HRQOL with the MOS 36-Item Health Survey and the University of California, Los Angeles Prostate Cancer Index, respectively.

Trafficking of AQP2 to the apical membrane is critical to the reabsorption of water in renal collecting ducts. Controlled apical positioning of AQP2 suggests the existence of proteins that interact with AQP2.

Characteristics of autonomic nervous function in Zucker-fatty rats: investigation by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability.

We investigated the characteristics of autonomic nervous function in Zucker-fatty and Zucker-lean rats. For this purpose, a long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded from conscious and unrestrained rats using a telemetry system, and the autonomic nervous function was investigated by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Although heart rate (HR) in Zucker-fatty rats was lower than that in Zucker-lean rats throughout 24 h, apparent diurnal variation in HR was observed in both strains and HR during the dark period was significantly higher than that in light period.

[The perioperative charge equivalence of radical prostatectomy with 1-year follow up since the diagnosis of prostate cancer].

We assessed the 1-year charges in the group of patients undergoing radical prostatectomy and the changes in hospital costs and resource use following implementation of a clinical care path. A total of 69 consecutive men treated with radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer were enrolled in the study. Hospital and outpatient records were analyzed for each patient in regard to preoperative, operative and postoperative charges of a 12-month period.

A small randomized phase III single-center trial on postoperative UFT administration in patients with completely resected non-small cell lung cancer.

Our objective was to clarify the efficacy of UFT administration after the complete resection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at a single-center institution, avoiding the biases produced by interinstitutional differences. A total of 30 patients who underwent the complete resection of NSCLC at our hospital between 1987 and 2001 were randomly assigned to a control group or to a UFT group (400 mg/day for 2 years). Thirteen patients were assigned to the control group and 17 patients were assigned to the UFT group.

Most of these tumors are squamous cell carcinomas, and sarcomas are much rarely seen in chronic burn scars. In the previous literature, 24 cases of burn scar sarcomas were reported.

We present a case of adult umbilical hernia with vertical dislocation along the abdominal wall. The hernial sac arose from the internal ring and connected to the umbilicus 20 mm below the internal ring. The postoperative course was uneventful.

Renoprotective effect of losartan in comparison to amlodipine in patients with chronic kidney disease and hypertension--a report of the Japanese Losartan Therapy Intended for the Global Renal Protection in Hypertensive Patients (JLIGHT) study.

A 12-month, multicenter (57 clinical institutions), randomized, open-labeled trial was undertaken to compare the efficacy of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist losartan and the calcium channel blocker amlodipine in patients with proteinuric chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension. A total of 117 patients (79, chronic glomerulonephritis; 14, diabetic nephropathy; 24, other CKD) were randomly allocated into two treatment groups. Losartan and amlodipine exerted the same efficacy for blood pressure (BP) control; however, losartan significantly reduced the 24-h urinary protein excretion at months 3, 6, and 12, with the reduction of 20.

Objectives: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissue produces numerous growth factors, which are multifunctional and considered predictive of patient survival. This study sought to evaluate the relationship between concentrations of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in NSCLC tissue and clinicopathological factors, and determine whether these factors correlate with long-term survival.

Methods: We retrospectively investigated 71 patients with histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, for whom the primary curative approach was surgery, and who received no chemotherapy or radiotherapy prior to surgery.

Synthesis and antisense properties of oligodeoxyribonucleotides containing C5-substituted arabinofuranosyluracil.

An oligodeoxyribonucleotide (ODN) containing three C5-substituted arabinofuranosyluracils was synthesized by the post-synthetic modification method from the ODN containing three C5-substituted 2,2'-anhydrouridines. The stability of the modified ODN/DNA duplex was lower than that of the corresponding normal duplex but that of the modified ODN/RNA duplex showed little change. The modified ODN could induce RNase H activity and was resistant against nuclease.

Sialyllactose-binding modified DNA aptamer bearing additional functionality by SELEX.

We produced a novel cationic-charged modified DNA aptamer for sialyllactose that is a ubiquitous component of the cell surface responsible for the infection of several viruses by using the magnetic-particle-based SELEX method. After 13 rounds of selection we selected 22 clones as sialyllactose-binding DNA aptamers composed of several modified thymidines. The DNA aptamers could form a three-way junction structure that likely forms a binding site for siallyllactose.
