Quantification of pulmonary regurgitation (PR), pulmonary flow distribution, and ventricular function is important for clinical surveillance in repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the established reference, but cost, test duration, and patient discomfort are potential limitations to its serial use. We investigated whether an Abbreviated CMR protocol would alter clinical decisions in TOF from those that would have been made using a full protocol.

This is of particular interest in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) where acquired heart disease should be prevented. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum of 2.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a leading cause of heart failure. Developing a novel therapeutic strategy for diabetic cardiomyopathy and characterizing animal models used for diabetes mellitus (DM) are important. Insulin 2 mutant (Ins2) Akita is a spontaneous, genetic, mouse model for T1DM, which is relevant to humans.

Methods And Results: We identified 380 consecutive patients referred for coronary angiography (CA) after dobutamine or exercise stress echocardiography (SE) between 2008 and 2013 performed with real-time perfusion imaging to examine myocardial CBF with a continuous ultrasound contrast infusion. Patients with left ventricular ejection fraction <40% were excluded.

Background: Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) can be treated using surgery, balloon angioplasty, or stent implantation. Although short-term results are excellent with all three treatment modalities, long-term cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality remain high, likely due to persistently abnormal vascular function. The effects of treatment modality on long-term vascular function remain uncharacterized.

It is very important to have a functioning triage system, whereby patients with high likelihood of developing a severe illness are referred to higher levels of care.
Aim: The objective of this study was to identify the alarm signs which would help in triaging of those patients with AFI without any specific diagnosis.
Data on the differential impact of physical activity on perceived health status (PHS) in a large adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patient population are lacking. We conducted a cross-sectional assessment of 4,028 ACHD patients recruited from 24 ACHD-specialized centers in 15 countries across 5 continents to examine the association between physical activity and PHS in a large international cohort of ACHD patients. A linear analog scale of the EuroQol-5D 3 level version and the 12-item Short Form Health Survey-version 2 were used to assess self-reported health status and the Health-Behavior Scale-Congenital Heart Disease was used as a subjective measurement of physical activity type, participation, and level.

Prior studies have been undertaken primarily in countries with high proportions of religious/spiritual people. We investigated (i) whether being religious/spiritual is an independent predictor of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in a large international sample of adults with congenital heart disease, (ii) whether the individual level of importance of religion/spirituality is an independent predictor for PROs, and (iii) if these relationships are moderated by the degree to which the respective countries are religious or secular.

Long-term safety and efficacy of this approach among adult patients however, is not well established.
Methods And Results: A comprehensive search of major electronic databases for studies reporting the long-term (≥5 year) outcomes post TC among adults yielded 114 studies, 9 of which had met the inclusion criteria.
Background: Patients with surgically repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) often have residual pulmonic valve regurgitation, leading to abnormal remodeling and dysfunction of the right ventricle often requiring pulmonic valve replacement. We tested the hypothesis that 3D analysis of right ventricular (RV) shape and function may reveal differences in regional adaptive remodeling that occurs in patients with rTOF, depending on whether a transannular patch (TAP) was utilized.
Methods: Forty patients with rTOF who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (1.
Background: Anthracycline induced cardiomyopathy is a major cause of mortality and morbidity among pediatric cancer survivors. It has been postulated that oxidative stress induction and inflammation may play a role in the pathogenesis of this process. Accordingly, the present study performed an assessment of biomarker profiles and functional imaging parameters focused upon potential early determinants of anthracycline induced cardiomyopathy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe functional significance of pulmonary arterial end-diastolic forward flow (EDFF) in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) is not fully understood, with conflicting reports regarding its associations with pulmonary regurgitation (PR), right ventricular (RV) size and function, and so-called restrictive RV physiology. To examine these associations, we retrospectively analyzed 399 patients with rTOF who had contemporaneous echocardiography (Echo) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) studies. The median age at TOF repair was 0.

Methods: Fifteen pigs (6 PS and 6 PR, 3 unoperated controls) were studied. Phase-contrast 4D-flow MRI was performed in models of PS and PR at baseline and at 10-12 weeks, in conjunction with cardiac catheterization.
Background: Ventricular dysfunction is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of conventional and speckle-tracking echocardiographic measures of right ventricular (RV) function before bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis palliation in predicting death or need for heart transplantation (HTx).
Methods: RV fractional area change (RVFAC) and longitudinal and circumferential strain and strain rate (SR) were measured in 64 prospectively recruited patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome from echocardiograms obtained before bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis surgery.
Aim: Since cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature-tracking (CMR-FT) has been demonstrated to be of incremental clinical merit we investigated the interchangeability of global left and right ventricular strain parameters between different CMR-FT software solutions.
Material And Methods: CMR-cine images of 10 patients without significant reduction in LVEF and RVEF and 10 patients with a significantly impaired systolic function were analyzed using two different types of FT-software (TomTec, Germany; QStrain, Netherlands). Global longitudinal strains (LV GLS, RV GLS), global left ventricular circumferential (GCS) and radial strains (GRS) were assessed.
Background: Left atrial (LA) strain (ε) and ε rate (SR) analysis by 2-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography is a novel method for functional assessment of the LA.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of left atrial appendage (LAA) exclusion by Lariat epicardial ligation on mechanical function of the LA by performing ε and SR analysis before and after the procedure.
Methods: A total of 66 patients who underwent successful LAA exclusion were included in the study.
Objective: First, to compare QOL and illness perceptions between patients with a Fontan circulation and patients with anatomically simple defects (ie, atrial septal defects [ASD] or ventricular septal defects [VSD]). Second, to explore illness perceptions as a mediator of the association between congenital heart disease (CHD) diagnosis and QOL.
Design: Cross-sectional observational study.
