Protection from direct human impacts can safeguard marine life, yet ocean warming crosses marine protected area boundaries. Here, we test whether protection offers resilience to marine heatwaves from local to network scales. We examine 71,269 timeseries of population abundances for 2269 reef fish species surveyed in 357 protected versus 747 open sites worldwide.

Cruciferous plants produce sulforaphane (SFN), an inhibitor of nuclear histone deacetylases (HDACs). In humans and other mammals, the consumption of SFN alters enzyme activities, DNA-histone binding, and gene expression within minutes. However, the ability of SFN to act as an HDAC inhibitor in nature, disrupting the epigenetic machinery of insects feeding on these plants, has not been explored.

Background: Sexual health is understudied and underreported in patients with lung cancer, and most data precede the approval of widely used targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors. The authors sought to evaluate the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women with lung cancer in our current clinical environment.

Methods: This cross-sectional survey study was administered online to 249 women via the GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2) Registry, using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Sexual Function and Satisfaction Measures questionnaire.

Predictors of discharge to home/community following inpatient-rehabilitation in a US national sample of Guillain-Barre-Syndrome patients.

Background: Guillain-Barre-Syndrome (GBS), an autoimmune polyneuropathy causing acute flaccid paralysis, is a rare condition with1-2 cases per 100,000 annually (approximately 5000 cases/year) in the United States (US). There is a paucity of published data regarding patient outcomes in association with discharge destinations following inpatient-rehabilitation (IR) in this patient population, thus this study.

Objectives: To analyze IR efficacy, and possible predictors of discharge to home/community in a US-national-sample of GBS patients.

Specifically in the foot and ankle, there are at least 24 different ossicles described the majority of which are incidental. However, there are accessory ossicles that can be symptomatic, leading to significant pain and discomfort.

Purpose: Sexual health concerns are common among female cancer survivors. Few data exist regarding patient-reported outcomes following interventions in this population. We aimed to determine patient-reported adherence and impact of interventions provided in an academic specialty clinic for treatment of sexual health problems.

Fluorescein Mapping in Vulvar Paget Disease.

Background: Vulvar Paget disease often requires extensive and, in some cases, multiple resections to treat. A fluorescein-mapping procedure followed by a staged vulvectomy may be an effective technique to tailor resection and identify clinically occult lesions.

Technique: We describe a two-step procedure; first, intravenous fluorescein sodium is injected, and the vulva is illuminated with a Wood's lamp.

99m Tc-Macroaggregated Albumin Liver Lung Shunt Study With Uptake Indicative of Patent Falciform Artery.

Intra-arterial injection of radioactive isotope 90-yttrium 90 Y has been used for elective internal radiation therapy for the treatment of localized hepatocellular carcinoma deemed surgically unresectable. It has also been used to treat intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and colorectal cancer that has metastasized to the liver. To prepare for 90 Y treatment, preprocedural mapping via hepatic angiography and 99m Tc-macroaggregated albumin liver lung shunt study followed by postprocedural 90 Y SPECT/CT is essential to ensure a targeted therapy.

Bilateral Axillary Nodal Uptake on 99m Tc-White Blood Cell Study Secondary to COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination.

A 77-year-old man with a history of chronic lower back pain, and prior spinal fusion surgery X2 was referred for 99m Tc-WBC Study for evaluation of worsening back pain and cervical radiculopathy to rule out any signs of infection. The patients white blood cells were tagged with 99m Tc-HMPAO (hexamethylpropylene amine oxime), and planar and SPECT/CT imaging was performed at 4 and 24 hours. 99m Tc-WBC Study showed no abnormal isotope localization in the spine; however, there was an incidental finding of bilateral increased soft tissue uptake in axillary lymph nodes.

Curriculum Guidelines for Graduate and Undergraduate Virology Courses.

Curriculum guidelines for virology are needed to best guide student learning due to the continuous and ever-increasing volume of virology information, the need to ensure that undergraduate and graduate students have a foundational understanding of key virology concepts, and the importance in being able to communicate that understanding to both other virologists and nonvirologists. Such guidelines, developed by virology educators and the American Society for Virology Education and Career Development Committee, are described herein.

Objective: To measure wellness and burnout among gynecologic oncology clinicians and identify trends and at-risk populations to inform future interventions.

Methods: Gynecologic oncologist (GO) and advanced practice provider (APP) responses to the 2020 Society of Gynecologic Oncology State of the Society survey were analyzed. The Maslach Burnout Inventory criteria for burnout was used.

Background: Despite compelling links between excess body weight and cancer, body mass index (BMI) cut-points, or thresholds above which cancer incidence increased, have not been identified. The objective of this study was to determine if BMI cut-points exist for 14 obesity-related cancers.

Subjects/methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patients 18-75 years old were included if they had ≥2 clinical encounters with BMI measurements in the electronic health record (EHR) at a single academic medical center from 2008 to 2018.

Ensuring equitable access to effective COVID-19 therapies is essential to reducing health disparities. Molnupiravir (Lagevrio) and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid) are oral antiviral agents effective at preventing hospitalization and death in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk* for progression to severe COVID-19 when initiated within 5 days of symptom onset.

When we open and close: Postoperative outcomes after aborted primary cytoreduction for ovarian cancer.

Objective: Little data exists to adequately counsel patients on the postsurgical morbidity and outcomes of an aborted primary debulking (AD) for advance stage epithelial ovarian cancer. Our objectives were to examine the 30-day morbidity of AD, percentage of patients who subsequently undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and interval cytoreductive surgery (ICS), residual disease at ICS, and predictors for complications after AD.

Methods: This was a single-institution retrospective analysis of patients who underwent AD for ovarian cancer from 01/2008 to 12/2020 using ICD-10 diagnoses and procedure codes.

Virology in the Classroom: Current Approaches and Challenges to Undergraduate- and Graduate-Level Virology Education.

The pervasive effects of the current coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic are but one reason for educators to refocus their efforts on virology teaching. Additionally, it is critical to understand how viruses function and to elucidate the relationship between virus and host. An understanding of current virology education may improve pedagogical approaches for educating our students and trainees.

Grazer behaviour can regulate large-scale patterning of community states.

Ecosystem patterning can arise from environmental heterogeneity, biological feedbacks that produce multiple persistent ecological states, or their interaction. One source of feedbacks is density-dependent changes in behaviour that regulate species interactions. By fitting state-space models to large-scale (~500 km) surveys on temperate rocky reefs, we find that behavioural feedbacks best explain why kelp and urchin barrens form either reef-wide patches or local mosaics.
