Article Synopsis
  • * Significant findings indicate that as dogs age, plasma concentrations of adiponectin (ADN) and the activity of certain antioxidants (GPx, SOD, MDH) decrease, while levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), triglycerides (TG), and malondialdehyde (MDA) increase.
  • * The research suggests that plasma ADN, GPx, SOD, and BUN levels could be key indicators of aging in healthy dogs, while serum amyloid A (SAA) is not a reliable

Objective: Regaining hip and knee muscle strength is important after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, it is unclear if muscles other than those of the operated hip also lose strength. This study aimed to identify deficits in hip and knee strength on the surgical and nonsurgical sides in female patients up to 12 months after THA.

Introduction: The prevalence of age-related diseases, including obesity (a lipid metabolism disorder), increases with the increase in a dog's lifespan. Most of age-related diseases are associated with oxidative stress by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from impaired mitochondrial functions. Safe and effective supplements with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities are required to prevent obesity and associated complications.

This paper presents an improved theoretical view of ab initio thermodynamics for polar GaN surfaces under gallium-rich conditions. The study uses density functional theory (DFT) calculations to systematically investigate the adsorption of gallium atoms on GaN polar surfaces, starting from the clean surface and progressing to the metallic multilayer. First principles phonon calculations are performed to determine vibrational free energies.

Introduction: Semi-extended tibial nailing techniques include the extra-articular technique (EAT) and the patellar eversion technique (PET). These approaches differ regarding the exposure of the patellar retinaculum and the size of the surgical field. This study compared the postoperative alignment and intramedullary nailing entry points between the EAT and PET for tibial fractures.

Suppression of carbon contamination in GaN films grown using metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) is a crucial issue in its application to high power and high frequency electronic devices. To know how to reduce the C concentration in the films, a sequential analysis based on first principles calculations is performed. Thus, surface reconstruction and the adsorption of the CH₄ produced by the decomposition of the Ga source, Ga(CH₃)₃, and its incorporation into the GaN sub-surface layers are investigated.

Clearly understanding elementary growth processes that depend on surface reconstruction is essential to controlling vapor-phase epitaxy more precisely. In this study, ammonia chemical adsorption on GaN(0001) reconstructed surfaces under metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) conditions (3Ga-H and N-H + Ga-H on a 2 × 2 unit cell) is investigated using steepest-entropy-ascent quantum thermodynamics (SEAQT). SEAQT is a thermodynamic-ensemble based, first-principles framework that can predict the behavior of non-equilibrium processes, even those far from equilibrium where the state evolution is a combination of reversible and irreversible dynamics.

Objective: During isometric exercise, the synovial joint tissue is prone to hypoxia, which is further enhanced in the presence of synovial inflammation. Hypoxia is also known to induce inflammatory cascades, suggesting that periodic hypoxia perpetuates synovitis in rheumatoid arthritis. We previously established an ex vivo cellular model of rheumatoid arthritis using the synovial tissue-derived inflammatory cells, which reproduced aberrant synovial overgrowth and pannus-like tissue development in vitro.

Plasma metabolite concentrations and activities of enzymes related to energy metabolism in plasma, peripheral leukocytes and liver of pregnant Romney ewes with restricted feeding were measured to assess those metabolites and enzymes as indicators for evaluating metabolic conditions in the ewes. The body weights and plasma lactate concentrations of the low-feeding ewes (about 1.0 times maintenance) were significantly lower than those of the high-feeding ewes (about 1.

In this paper, two cases of the gluteal soft tissue necrosis after pelvic fractures will be discussed. In the case of a 29-year-old man, a localized area of skin necrosis on the buttock appeared after transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) of the right internal iliac artery (IIA). In the second case, a 52-year-old man, who was treated using TAE of the bilateral IIA's, developed an extensive area of necrosis in the gluteus maximus muscle with subsequent severe infection.

Plasma metabolite and immunoreactive insulin concentrations and activities of enzymes related to energy metabolism in peripheral leukocytes were measured in growing Holstein calves. A ratio of girth of abdomen divided by girth of thorax (A/T ratio) of calves was significantly elevated after weaning, and the A/T ratio maybe a good indicator to evaluate rumen development. Plasma glucose and free fatty acid concentrations were changed in calves accompanying change in feeding.
