Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of modified MRI mismatch criteria for administering intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) to wake-up stroke (WUPS) patients, focusing on those with partial mismatch.
  • Conducted at Stavanger University Hospital, it included 78 WUPS patients, assessing their clinical outcomes based on NIHSS and mRS scores after 3 months, alongside safety concerns like intracranial hemorrhage (ICH).
  • The findings revealed that patients with the best outcomes had a DWI/FLAIR mismatch and no instances of ICH were reported, supporting the modified criteria's effectiveness for selecting WUPS patients for IVT.

Background: Endovascular thrombectomy, the preferred treatment for acute large-vessel occlusion stroke, is highly time-dependent. Many patients live far from thrombectomy centers due to large geographical variations in stroke services. This study aimed to explore the consequences of long transport distance on the proportion of thrombectomy-eligible patients who underwent thrombectomy, the clinical outcomes with or without thrombectomy, the timelines for patients transported, and the diagnostic accuracy of large-vessel occlusion in primary stroke centers.

Article Synopsis
  • Pneumonia, caused by viruses and bacteria, triggers both innate and adaptive immune responses, which can be measured through biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and Neopterin.
  • A study involving 194 patients aimed to evaluate these biomarkers in differentiating between viral and bacterial pneumonia and to assess the occurrence of neuropsychiatric symptoms among patients.
  • Results indicated that higher CRP/Neopterin ratios are linked to bacterial pneumonia, while lower ratios were found in COVID-19 and bacterial superinfections, successfully distinguishing between the types of pneumonia and indicating the presence of superinfections.

The identification of recurrent genomic alterations in tumour cells has a significant role in the classification of mature B- and T-cell lymphomas. Following the development of new technologies, such as next generation sequencing and the improvement of classical technologies such as conventional and molecular cytogenetics, a huge catalogue of genomic alterations in lymphoid neoplasms has been established. These alterations are relevant to refine the taxonomy of the classification of lymphomas, to scrutinize the differential diagnosis within different lymphoma entities and to help assessing the prognosis and clinical management of the patients.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe, chronic multisystemic disease which, depending on its severity, can lead to considerable physical and cognitive impairment, loss of ability to work and the need for nursing care including artificial nutrition and, in very severe cases, even death. The aim of this D-A-CH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) consensus statement is 1) to summarize the current state of knowledge on ME/CFS, 2) to highlight the Canadian Consensus Criteria (CCC) as clinical criteria for diagnostics with a focus on the leading symptom post-exertional malaise (PEM) and 3) to provide an overview of current options and possible future developments, particularly with regard to diagnostics and therapy. The D-A-CH consensus statement is intended to support physicians, therapists and valuer in diagnosing patients with suspected ME/CFS by means of adequate anamnesis and clinical-physical examinations as well as the recommended clinical CCC, using the questionnaires and other examination methods presented.

In recent years, an increasing number of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) undergraduates have chosen to study in STEM fields and pursue careers in research. Yet, very little research has been undertaken on the barriers and inclusive experiences often faced by D/HH undergraduates who prefer to use spoken English in research settings, instead of American Sign Language (ASL). To identify barriers and inclusive strategies, we studied six English speaking D/HH undergraduate students working in research laboratories with their eight hearing mentors, and their three hearing peers sharing their experiences.

Novel antidepressants are predominantly evaluated preclinically in rodent models of chronic stress in which animals experience a single prolonged exposure to chronic stress prior to treatment. Rodent models of a single episode of chronic stress translate poorly to human depressive disorders, which are commonly marked by recurring depressive episodes. Intravenous administration of Reelin has previously been shown to resolve immobility in the forced swim test of rats exposed to a single prolonged exposure to chronic stress.

Background: Around 10% of people who had COVID-9 infection suffer from persistent symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnoea, chest pain, arthralgia/myalgia, sleep disturbances, cognitive dysfunction and impairment of mental health. Different underlying pathomechanisms appear to be involved, in particular inflammation, alterations in amino acid metabolism, autonomic dysfunction and gut dysbiosis.

Aim: As routine tests are often inconspicuous in patients with Long COVID (LC), similarly to patients suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), accessible biomarkers indicating dysregulation of specific pathways are urgently needed to identify underlying pathomechanisms and enable personalized medicine treatment.

Background: Attenuation is correlated with the concentration of contrast medium (CM) in the arteries. The cardiac output (CO) affects the concentration of CM in the circulatory system; therefore, CO affects the time-density curve (TDC). Thus, estimating CO using TDC from test-bolus images acquired in computed tomography (CT) is possible.

Diagnosing any of the more than 30 types of T-cell lymphomas is considered a challenging task for many pathologists and currently requires morphological expertise as well as the integration of clinical data, immunophenotype, flow cytometry and clonality analyses. Even considering all available information, some margin of doubt might remain using the current diagnostic procedures. In recent times, the genetic landscape of most T-cell lymphomas has been elucidated, showing a number of diagnostically relevant mutations.

Background: Despite recent advances in the treatment of aggressive lymphomas, a significant fraction of patients still succumbs to their disease. Thus, novel therapies are urgently needed. As the anti-CD20 antibody rituximab and the CD19-targeting antibody tafasitamab share distinct modes of actions, we investigated if dual-targeting of aggressive lymphoma B-cells by combining rituximab and tafasitamab might increase cytotoxic effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied two types of follicular lymphoma (FL): localized (lFL) and systemic (sFL) to understand how they develop.
  • They looked at 147 cases of lFL and 122 cases of sFL, using special methods to check for genetic changes.
  • They found that while both types have some similarities, there are important differences, like certain genetic changes that might affect how long people live without the disease worsening.

Post-infectious fatigue is a common complication that can lead to decreased physical efficiency, depression, and impaired quality of life. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota has been proposed as a contributing factor, as the gut-brain axis plays an important role in regulating physical and mental health. This pilot study aimed to investigate the severity of fatigue and depression, as well as the quality of life of 70 patients with post-infectious fatigue who received a multi-strain probiotic preparation or placebo in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

The conceptual description of Follicular lymphoma (FL) in the 5th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of haematolymphoid tumors (WHO-HAEM5) has undergone significant revision. The vast majority of FL (85%) with a follicular growth pattern are composed of centrocytes and centroblasts, harbor the t(14;18)(q32;q21) translocation and are now termed classic FL (cFL). They are set apart from three related subtypes, FL with predominantly follicular growth pattern, FL with unusual cytological features (uFL) and follicular large B-cell lymphoma (FLBCL).

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) represents a rare aggressive B-cell lymphoma subtype characterized by an adverse clinical outcome. EBV infection of lymphoma cells has been associated with different lymphoma subtypes while the precise role of EBV in lymphomagenesis and specific molecular characteristics of these lymphomas remain elusive. To further unravel the biology of EBV associated DLBCL, we present a comprehensive molecular analysis of overall 60 primary EBV positive (EBV+) DLBCLs using targeted sequencing of cancer candidate genes (CCGs) and genome-wide determination of recurrent somatic copy number alterations (SCNAs) in 46 cases, respectively.
