Recently, aberrant DNA methylation of the HIST1H4F gene (encodes Histone 4 protein) has been shown in many types of cancer, which may serve as a promising biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. However, the correlation between DNA methylation of the HIST1H4F gene and its role in gene expression is unclear in bladder cancer. Therefore, the first objective of this study is to explore the DNA methylation pattern of the HIST1H4F gene and then further elucidate its effects on HIST1H4F mRNA expression in bladder cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the presence of insulin-like growth factor receptor-1 (IGFR1) in the cremaster muscle (CM) and its role in testicular descent, comparing cases of undescended testis (UT) and normal conditions.
  • Results showed that IGFR1 staining was significantly higher in the CM from patients with normal testis compared to those with undescended testis, indicating a potential link between IGFR1 levels and testicular descent.
  • The findings suggest that IGFR1 might be involved in the development of CM and testicular descent, with lower IGFR1 density observed in undescended testis cases, prompting further investigation into its relationship with other factors affecting this condition.

Background/aim: The variations and anomalies of the kidneys besides the variations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and left renal vein (LRV) are mostly asymptomatic, but they carry potential risks particularly during retroperitoneal surgery and radiological interventions. Our aim was to find the frequencies, types, and sex distribution of renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and methods: Between November 2010 and April 2011, a retrospective study was conducted including lumbar spinal MRI of 3000 consecutive patients (1869 females and 1131 males) with a median age of 54 years (range: 9-78 years).

In this study, female rats induced with chemical cystitis were administered the hormone human choriogonadotropin (HCG), and it was aimed to reveal the usefulness of HCG in the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. The materials for this study were 32 Wistar albino female rats. The study groups were formed as follows: the cystitis group (Group 1), the cystitis + HCG protection group (Group 2), the cystitis + HCG treatment group (Group 3), and the control group (Group 4), with eight rats in each group.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a potential predictor for disease progression and recurrence in patients with primary non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).
  • A total of 86 newly diagnosed NMIBC patients were analyzed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer risk tables, focusing on correlations between various biological markers and age.
  • The results showed significant differences in NLR and age across risk groups, but after adjusting for age, the initial significant association with NLR disappeared, highlighting the importance of correcting for age in NLR-related research.

Objective: Creation of the access tract is an important step in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). In this study, we compared the efficiency and safety of Amplatz, Alken, and balloon dilation methods in the creation of the access tract.

Materials And Methods: Data from 487 PNL patients admitted to 517 renal units in 3 centers were analyzed.

  • The study compared standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with a newer technique called intraoperative antegrade flexible nephroscopy (IAFN) for treating staghorn kidney stones.
  • A total of 166 patients with staghorn stones were analyzed, with 105 undergoing standard PCNL and 61 using PCNL with IAFN, showing similar demographics but differing in operation times and recovery metrics.
  • Both methods achieved high stone-free (SF) rates above 85%, with IAFN showing slightly better results, but further research with larger groups is suggested to confirm these findings.

Background/aim: To evaluate the predictability of vardenafil success in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) by using cardiological tests.

Materials And Methods: Patients diagnosed with ED who did not benefit from lifestyle changes (n = 68) were evaluated with an abridged 5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). The pretreatment and posttreatment IIEF-5 scores were compared with pretreatment data obtained from cardiological examinations.

The objective of This study was to report our pathological findings in nephrectomy specimens from patients treated for non-functioning hydronephrotic kidney due to renal pelvic stone disease. A total of 97 patients who underwent nephrectomy for non-functioning hydronephrotic kidneys between January, 2011 and June, 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. A non-functioning kidney was defined as one having paper-thin parenchyma on urinary ultrasound or computed tomography, exhibiting no contrast visualization in the collecting duct system on intravenous urography and having a split renal function of <10% on nuclear renal function studies.

Background: Treatment of urethral strictures can be challenging, but, with appropriate preoperative evaluation and surgical planning it is possible to achieve successful results.

Objectives: To analyze if the stricture length affects the success with dorsal onlay buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty technique.

Material And Methods: Between January 2004 and June 2010 a total of 40 patients with anterior urethral stricture were treated with dorsal onlay buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty.

Objective: Folate, vitamin B12 and iron are important vitamin and minerals which play role in the development of nervous system. The aim of this study was looking at the presence of folate, vitamin B12 and iron deficiency among patients with Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) and possible relation between the delay of central nervous system (CNS) development, PNE and folate, vitamin B12 and iron states.

Methods: Consecutively applied forty patients with PNE (23 girls and 17 boys) and otherwise normal thirty control subjects (17 girls and 13 boys) were included in the study.

Background And Objectives: Renal cysts have a high prevalence in the general population, and their estimated incidence increases with age. Renal cyst aspiration (usually with sclerotherapy) or open/laparoscopic decortication is a generally effective and safe method in the treatment of symptomatic simple renal cysts. The success rates of laparoscopic decortication and percutaneous aspiration-sclerotherapy were compared to assist in the decision making for the procedure.

The aim of the study was to compare percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and staged retrograde flexible ureteroscopy (FURS) methods used in the treatment of kidney stones of 2 cm or more in diameter. The study comprised a total of 60 patients with a diagnosis of kidney pelvic stones more than 2 cm in diameter, for whom surgery was planned between January 2013 and January 2014. The patients were randomly allocated to two groups as staged retrograde FURS (Group A) and PCNL (Group B).

  • Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) has emerged as a new method in urology, effectively treating larger kidney stones, yet there's ongoing debate about whether it's better than percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) for these cases.
  • A study analyzed 154 patients who underwent either PNL (74 patients) or RIRS (80 patients), comparing their success and complication rates in treating stones 2-3 cm in size.
  • Results showed a slightly higher stone-free rate for PNL (95.5%) compared to RIRS (80.6%), but RIRS had fewer complications (8.8% for RIRS versus 13.5% for PNL), suggesting RIRS may be a viable alternative to P
