Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have recently received a lot of attention due to their unique physical properties, and their environmentally friendly features such as low toxicity and high biocompatibility. Supercritical fluids, which possess unusual properties such as high solubility, high diffusivity, low viscosity and zero surface tension, are now commonly used particularly in the fields of electronic, chemical and materials science and engineering. Here, we synthesise carbon nano/microparticles in supercritical acetone, in which neither external molecules nor starting materials are dissolved/dispersed.

Metal additive manufacturing techniques have been used to develop biomaterials for mandibular reconstruction. Titanium artificial mandibles with a lattice structure have been proposed, and the optimal conditions for their strength to withstand mechanical stress around the mandible have been reported.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMandibular reconstructive surgery is necessary for large bone defects. Although various reconstruction methods have been performed clinically, there is no mandibular reconstruction method that meets both sufficient strength criteria and the patient's specific morphology. In this study, the material strength of the cylindrical lattice structures formed by electron-beam melting additive manufacturing using titanium alloy powder was investigated for mandibular reconstruction.

The particles are monodisperse in water thanks to their high absolute value of the zeta potential in water. In this report, we investigate the effect of thermal treatment of the particles on some changes in the physical properties and structures.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA carbon nanobelt (CNB) is a loop of fused benzene rings and a C molecule is a football shaped fullerene composed of 60 carbon atoms. In this study, we synthesize uniform spherical particles composed of (6,6)CNBs and C molecules in 1,2-dichlorobenzene at room temperature via bottom-up self-assembly, setting the molar concentrations of (6,6)CNBs and C molecules at appropriate values, and find that the particles are monodisperse even in water. The present room temperature synthetic methodology may well be applied to the creation of nano/micro structures/materials using basic carbon nano units such as cycloparaphenylene (CPP, carbon nanorings) and fullerenes; e.

This reaction proceeds 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer of N-centered radicals directly generated by N-H bond cleavage and does not require the synthesis of pre-functionalized N-centered radical precursors or the use of strong stoichiometric oxidants.

We compared bile acid metabolism between healthy subjects and patients with chronic constipation and assessed changes in the bile acid profile after elobixibat administration in the latter group.
Methods: Healthy subjects (n = 10) and patients with chronic constipation (n = 19) were assessed as inpatients for 7 days, during which they received meals containing ~60 g/day of fat.
Mandibular reconstruction using a titanium mesh tray and autologous bone is a common procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery. However, there can be material problems-such as broken titanium mesh trays-which may undermine long-term functionality. This study was designed to investigate the optimal conditions for a titanium mesh tray with an ideal mandibular shape and sufficient strength, using computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing technology, and electron beam additive manufacturing.

Highly-crystalline C-QDs were synthesized in a matter of 5 min using the fenugreek seeds as a sustainable carbon source. It is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, where C-QDs were synthesized using MPED via natural carbon precursor.

However, such coarse categorization does not distinguish the relative risk of harm for the majority of medications. To begin to develop a more fine-grained measurement scale for the relative risk of harm spanning many medications, we performed an experiment with 18 practicing pharmacists.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFImmunotherapy that targets -linked glycans has not yet been developed due in large part to the lack of specificity of -linked glycans between normal and malignant cells. -Glycan chains are synthesized by the sequential action of glycosyl transferases in the Golgi apparatus. It is an overwhelming task to discover drug-like inhibitors of glycosyl transferases that block the synthesis of specific branching processes in cancer cells, killing tumor cells selectively.

Tetramethylammonium fluoride tetrahydrate was found to promote the biaryl coupling of aryl iodides bearing electron-withdrawing substituents with unactivated arenes. The reaction takes place at temperatures between 100 and 150°C and can be applied to a wide range of aromatic and heteroaromatic rings, affording the products in moderate to high yields.

We analyzed the efficacy, safety, and impact on quality of life (QOL) of elobixibat in patients with symptomatically more severe constipation in the two phase 3 trials.
Methods: This post hoc analysis of elobixibat treatment outcomes included data from a 2-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial (10 mg/d), and a 52-week, open-label trial (5-15 mg/d) in subgroups with severe constipation defined as ≤2 spontaneous bowel movements (SBMs) and ≤3 Bristol Stool Form Scale score during the second week of the 2-week run-in period.
We have explored a method to convert a muraymycin biosynthetic intermediate 3 to an anticancer drug lead 2 for in vivo and thorough preclinical studies. Cu(OAc) forms a stable complex with the amide 4 and prevents electrophilic reactions at the 2-((3-aminopropyl)amino)acetamide moiety. Under the present conditions, the desired 5″-primary amine was selectively protected with (Boc)O to yield 6.

These analogues also inhibit the outgrowth of spores at 2× minimum inhibitory concentration.

However, quantitative understandings of ZVI processes are significantly deficient. To compensate for the lack of quantitative analyses of removal of heavy metals by ZVI, a phenomenological reaction kinetic model was newly developed for removal of Cu chosen as a typical heavy metal from acidic aqueous solutions by ZVI.

It is well known that C molecules are stable both physically and chemically and the affinity of C molecules with biomolecules is rather high. Here, we synthesise fibres composed of C and sulphur and immobilise the surface of the fibres with the primary antibody; i.

However, in spite of recent research advances on kin influence and birth order effects on human infant and child mortality, studies that directly examine the interaction of kin context and birth order on sibling differences in child mortality are still rare. Our study supplements this literature with new findings from large-scale individual-level panel data for three East Asian historical populations from northeast China (1789-1909), northeast Japan (1716-1870), and north Taiwan (1906-1945), where preference for sons and first-borns is common.
