A Mn-based sodium-containing layered oxide, P'2-type NaMnO, is revisited as a positive electrode material for sodium-ion batteries, and factors affecting its electrochemical performances are examined. The cyclability of NaMnO is remarkably improved by increasing the lower cut-off voltage during cycling even though the reversible capacity is sacrificed. Furthermore, the use of highly concentrated electrolytes, in which the presence of free solvent molecules is eliminated, effectively suppresses the dissolution of Mn ions, thus enabling stable cycling with >85% capacity retention for 300 continuous cycles.

Brain functions are mediated via the complex interplay between several complex factors, and hence, identifying the underlying cause of an abnormality within a certain brain region can be challenging. In mitochondrial disease, abnormalities in brain function are thought to be attributed to accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) with pathogenic mutations; however, only few previous studies have directly demonstrated that accumulation of mutant mtDNA induced abnormalities in brain function. Herein, we examined the effects of mtDNA mutations on brain function via behavioral analyses using a mouse model with an A2748G point mutation in mtDNA tRNA.

We devised a method to detect the classical swine fever virus (CSFV) in tail-wiped swabs from wild boars. The CSFV gene in swabs was detected with high sensitivity using nested real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is a combination of reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR. We compared CSFV gene detection from boar tissue using the conventional and our tail-wiped swab method.

Background And Objectives: ABO blood group mismatch between the donor and the recipient can affect the success of the transplant as well as problems with the red blood cells during allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). However, the impact of the Rhesus (Rh) D mismatch on transplant outcomes in allogeneic HCT has been poorly elucidated.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the impact of the RhD mismatch on post-transplant outcomes in 64,923 patients who underwent allogeneic HCT between 2000 and 2021 using a Japanese registry database.

With the International Commission on Radiological Protection's (ICRP) reduction in the radiation dose threshold for cataracts, evaluating and preventing radiation exposure to the lens of the eye among interventional radiology (IR) staff have become urgent tasks. In this study, we focused on differences in lens-equivalent dose (H) to which IR nurses in three hospitals were exposed and aimed to identify factors underlying these differences. According to analyses of time-, distance-, and shielding-related factors, the magnitude of the H dose to which IR nurses were exposed could be explained not by time or shielding but by the distance between the X-ray exposure field and the location of the IR nurse.

Article Synopsis
  • Fludarabine-based conditioning regimens in cord blood transplantation (CBT) have varying effectiveness, with the study analyzing five different combinations in 1395 adult patients suffering from myeloid malignancies.
  • The results showed that the combination of fludarabine and melphalan with high-dose total body irradiation (FM140T) had the highest 3-year survival rate (67%), while other regimens had significantly lower rates, indicating FM140T as the most favorable option.
  • These outcomes suggest that survival rates in CBT for myeloid cancers depend greatly on the type and dosage of alkylating agents used alongside fludarabine, with FM140T being recommended over fludarabine/busulfan

Article Synopsis
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is commonly treated with allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), and new donor options are available for older patients lacking HLA-matched siblings.
  • This study analyzed outcomes from 5,704 AML patients over 50 years old who received HCT from various donor types between 2013 and 2021, focusing on survival and leukemia-free survival (LFS).
  • Findings revealed that donor type did not significantly affect overall survival, but 8/8 allele-matched and unrelated cord blood donors showed better LFS compared to matched sibling donors, while relapse rates were lower for these donor types.

This is the first report of vestibular examinations before and after the successful treatment of vestibular migraine (VM), a common cause of recurrent vertigo, with calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor inhibitor. We evaluated a 42-year-old female with VM and concomitant probable Meniere's disease, whose headache and dizziness have improved promptly with the administration of erenumab, a CGRP receptor inhibitor. The sensorineural hearing loss in pure-tone audiometry, dysfunctions shown in vestibular examinations (cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials), and mild endolymphatic hydrops shown in gadolinium-enhanced inner ear magnetic resonance imaging, all in the right ear, revealed no change compared with those observed before treatment.

  • The study examined the use of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) as a prognostic marker in adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL), analyzing data from 68 patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2017.
  • Results showed that higher CAR levels were linked to worse overall survival, with patients having a CAR above 0.553 surviving a median of 3.94 months compared to 8.37 months for those below this threshold.
  • The findings suggest that CAR could serve as a simple and valuable independent prognostic marker, particularly in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Hematologic diseases frequently affect people >60 years old, and allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is a potentially curative treatment for these patients. Although several multicenter studies proposed the risk assessment of allo-SCT for the elderly, they receive different treatments and management at each facility. Therefore, accumulating data from institutions that exhibit relatively the same treatment policy and patient care is important.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) offers a possible cure for patients with relapsed and refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) through potentially beneficial graft versus lymphoma effects. However, allogeneic HCT is associated with high nonrelapse mortality (NRM). Fludarabine with reduced-intensity busulfan (Flu/Bu2) and myeloablative busulfan (Flu/Bu4) are commonly used in conditioning regimens for allogeneic HCT; however, data on their use in patients with NHL is limited.
