First demonstration of electron scattering using a novel target developed for short-lived nuclei.

We carried out a demonstrative electron scattering experiment using a novel ion-trap target exclusively developed for short-lived highly unstable nuclei. Using stable 133Cs ion as a target, this experiment completely mimicked electron scattering off short-lived nuclei. Achieving a luminosity higher than 10;{26} cm;{-2} s;{-1} with around only 10;{6} trapped ions on the electron beam, the angular distribution of elastic scattering was successfully measured.

Development of large deformation in 62Cr.

The structure of neutron-rich isotopes 60Cr and 62Cr was studied via proton inelastic scattering in inverse kinematics. The deformation lengths (delta) for 60Cr and 62Cr were extracted as 1.12(16) and 1.

Depressive illness burden associated with complex polypharmacy in patients with bipolar disorder: findings from the STEP-BD.

Background: Many patients with bipolar disorder receive multi-drug treatment regimens, but the distinguishing profiles of patients who receive complex pharmacologies have not been established.

Method: Prescribing patterns of lithium, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and antipsychotics were examined for 4,035 subjects with bipolar disorder (DSM-IV) immediately prior to entering the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD). Subjects were recruited for participation across 22 centers in the United States between November 1999 and July 2005.

JAK2V617F-positive essential thrombocythemia and multiple myeloma with IGH/CCND1 gene translocation coexist, but originate from separate clones.

Overlapping of essential thrombocythemia (ET) and multiple myeloma (MM) has been extremely rare. Our report concerns a case with concomitant ET and MM, where JAK2V617F was present in non-myeloma peripheral blood leukocytes and bone marrow (BM) hematopoietic cells, but not in BM-derived CD138-positive myeloma cells. In contrast, double-color fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis showed that BM-derived CD138-positive myeloma cells possessed the gene translocation between the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene and the cyclin D1 gene, which was not involved in non-myeloma hematopoietic cells.

Suppression pattern of neutral pions at high transverse momentum in Au + Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV and constraints on medium transport coefficients.

For Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV, we measure neutral pion production with good statistics for transverse momentum, pT, up to 20 GeV/c. A fivefold suppression is found, which is essentially constant for 5 < pT < 20 GeV/c. Experimental uncertainties are small enough to constrain any model-dependent parametrization for the transport coefficient of the medium, e.

The psychological and emotional fallout of cancer and its treatment.

We review the literature on psychosocial and emotional adjustment for individuals who have survived cancer for at least 5 years and who have not experienced recurrences of the disease. Most long-term survivors experience low levels of distress and report overall emotional adjustment that is comparable with age-matched comparisons who never had a cancer diagnosis. However, survivors frequently have circumscribed areas of persistent difficulties, including fears of recurrence and psychological reactions to the physical dysfunction and disfigurement caused by some treatments.

Onset of pi(0) suppression studied in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt S NN=22.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV.

Neutral pion transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra at midrapidity (|y| less than or approximately 0.35) were measured in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=22.4, 62.

J/psi production in sqrt s_NN=200 GeV Cu+Cu collisions.

Yields for J/psi production in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt s_NN=200 GeV have been measured over the rapidity range |y|<2.2 and compared with results in p+p and Au+Au collisions at the same energy. The Cu+Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au+Au data for J/psi production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie.

Genetic association between aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) variation and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) among non-drinkers in two large population samples in Japan.

Aim: Moderate alcohol consumption appears to confer some protection against coronary heart disease, which is related to an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The genotype of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is closely related to alcohol metabolism but a relationship between ALDH2 genotypes and HDL-C levels has not been proven. We undertook a large-scale correlation study between HDL-C levels and ALDH2 genotype among Japanese non-drinkers to investigate the possibility that HDL-C levels could be associated with ALDH2 genotype.

Particle-species dependent modification of jet-induced correlations in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV.

Measurements in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV of jet correlations for a trigger hadron at intermediate transverse momentum (p_{T,trig}) with associated mesons or baryons at lower p_{T,assoc} indicate strong modification of the away-side jet. The ratio of jet-associated baryons to mesons increases with centrality and p_{T,assoc}. For the most central collisions, the ratio is similar to that for inclusive measurements.

Self-representation in social anxiety disorder: linguistic analysis of autobiographical narratives.

Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) posit aberrant beliefs about the social self as a key psychological mechanism that maintains fear of negative evaluation in social and performance situations. Consequently, a distorted self-view should be evident when recalling painful autobiographical social memories, as reflected in linguistic expression, negative self-beliefs, and emotion and avoidance. To test this hypothesis, 42 adults diagnosed with SAD and 27 non-psychiatric healthy controls (HC) composed autobiographical narratives of distinct social anxiety related situations, generated negative self-beliefs (NSB), and provided emotion and avoidance ratings.

Source breakup dynamics in Au + Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV via three-dimensional two-pion source imaging.

A three-dimensional correlation function obtained from midrapidity, low p(T), pion pairs in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV is studied. The extracted model-independent source function indicates a long range tail in the directions of the pion pair transverse momentum (out) and the beam (long). A proper breakup time tau(0) ~ 9 fm/c and a mean proper emission duration Delta tau ~ 2 fm/c, leading to sizable emission time differences ({|Delta t(LCM)|} approximately 12 fm/c), are required to allow models to be successfully matched to these tails.

Cerebral small vessel disease and chronic kidney disease (CKD): results of a cross-sectional study in community-based Japanese elderly.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In recent years, several experimental and epidemiological studies have suggested that CKD is associated with endothelial dysfunction; thereby, a CKD state may initiate both large and small vessel damage. The association between renal dysfunction and asymptomatic lacunar infarction was reported in a hospital-based study, whereas the relationship between cerebral small vessel disease (SVD)-related lesions and CKD could not be clarified in a community-based study.

Novel internal target for electron scattering off unstable nuclei.

A novel internal target has been developed, which will make electron scattering off short-lived radioactive nuclei possible in an electron storage ring. An "ion trapping" phenomenon in the electron storage ring was successfully utilized for the first time to form the target for electron scattering. Approximately 7 x 10(6) stable 133Cs ions were trapped along the electron beam axis for 85 ms at an electron beam current of 80 mA.

Substance abuse counselor certification in California: how is nicotine addiction addressed?

Persons entering substance abuse treatment smoke at rates three to four times that of the general population, but programs providing substance abuse treatment rarely address comorbid nicotine addiction. With California's recent adoption of a regulation requiring alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselors to be certified, this study explored the degree to which nicotine addiction education was required or recommended to obtain certification by examining pertinent documentation and Web sites. Findings reveal two main points.

Monosomy and trisomy of 15q24-qter with cleft lip and palate.

Chromosome 15 aberrations clinically present as facial dysmorphisms such as a prominent nose, low-set ears, micrognathia and a short neck; a cleft lip and palate have not been reported. This is the first reported case of de-novo terminal deletion at 15q24 with a cleft lip and palate and low-set ears. The baby boy had a complete cleft lip and palate on the left side and incomplete cleft lip and palate on the right.

Movement of the mandibular condyle and activity of the masseter and lateral pterygoid muscles during masticatory-like jaw movements induced by electrical stimulation of the cortical masticatory area of rabbits.

We examined the functional role of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LP) and the masseter muscle (MS) in the movement of the mandibular condyle in masticatory-like jaw movements induced by electrical stimulation of the cortical masticatory area of urethane-anaesthetised rabbits. EMGs of the LP and MS were recorded along with video images of the mandibular condyle movement filmed with a high-speed CCD camera at a time resolution of 8 ms. The time required for the contractile force of the MS and LP to emerge as bite force or jaw movement was determined by direct electrical stimulation to respective muscles: 32.

Gene organization in rice revealed by full-length cDNA mapping and gene expression analysis through microarray.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a model organism for the functional genomics of monocotyledonous plants since the genome size is considerably smaller than those of other monocotyledonous plants. Although highly accurate genome sequences of indica and japonica rice are available, additional resources such as full-length complementary DNA (FL-cDNA) sequences are also indispensable for comprehensive analyses of gene structure and function.

Characteristics of compacted plasmid DNA by high pressurization.

In order to investigate the effect of pressure on the tertiary structure of plasmid DNA having the supercoiled and relaxed forms, the solution of plasmid DNA was hydrostatically pressurized at different atmosphere and 40 degrees C for various times. For dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement of the pressurized plasmid DNA, the hydrodynamic diameters of the super-coiled and relaxed plasmid DNA were decreased with increasing pressure. Also, at constant pressure, a long period of pressure treatment effectively induced the decrease in plasmid DNA.

Elliptic flow for phi mesons and (anti)deuterons in Au+Au collisions at square root of sNN=200 GeV.

Differential elliptic flow (v(2)) for phi mesons and (anti)deuterons (d)d is measured for Au+Au collisions at square root of sNN=200 GeV. The v(2) for phi mesons follows the trend of lighter pi+/- and K+/- mesons, suggesting that ordinary hadrons interacting with standard hadronic cross sections are not the primary driver for elliptic flow development. The v(2) values for (d)d suggest that elliptic flow is additive for composite particles.

MRI features of mandibular osteomyelitis: practical criteria based on an association with conventional radiography features and clinical classification.

Objectives: The aims of this study were (1) to assess the diagnostic power of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for mandibular osteomyelitis through comparison with conventional techniques and (2) to establish practical MRI diagnostic criteria in relation to treatment and clinical outcome.

Study Design: In 55 subjects, clinically suspected as mandibular osteomyelitis, signal intensities (SI) were evaluated on T1-weighted/short T1 inversion recovery (STIR) images.

Results: Forty-seven subjects were definitively diagnosed as having osteomyelitis by pathology studies or clinical course.

System size and energy dependence of jet-induced hadron pair correlation shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at square root sNN=200 and 62.4 GeV.

We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum (1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from dijets in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at square root sNN=62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from Delta phi=pi in central and semicentral collisions in all the systems.
