Gene regulatory networks that act upstream of skeletal muscle fate determinants are distinct in different anatomical locations. Despite recent efforts, a clear understanding of the cascade of events underlying the emergence and maintenance of the stem cell pool in specific muscle groups remains unresolved and debated. Here, we invalidated Pitx2 with multiple Cre-driver mice prenatally, postnatally, and during lineage progression.

Article Synopsis
  • Skeletal muscle stem cells (MuSCs) exhibit functional differences, with cranial MuSCs (like those in extraocular muscles) showing higher growth and repair capabilities compared to limb MuSCs.* ! -
  • The study identified that these EOM MuSCs have a delay in differentiation and lower expression of the Myod gene, which is linked to their greater proliferation capacity.* ! -
  • Additionally, EOM MuSCs express various extracellular matrix components typical of non-muscle cells, influenced by a unique transcription factor network that remains consistent across different conditions, highlighting their distinct functional identity.* !

Objective: Edoxaban is given as pharmacologic prophylaxis alone or in combination with mechanical prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after total knee arthroplasty. Several choices are made regarding edoxaban dosages when used in combination with mechanical prophylaxis. This study aimed to compare efficacy and safety in patients who received edoxaban with elastic stockings after total knee arthroplasty between those who received the standard dose, including those who received a reduced dose after meeting dose reduction criteria, and those who received reduced doses without dose reduction criteria.

High-resolution melting (HRM) analysis is a PCR-based method that can be used as a screening assay to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants. However, conventional HRM assays hardly detect slight melting temperature differences at the A-T to T-A transversion. As the N501Y substitution results from A-T to T-A transversion in A23063, few or no studies have shown that a conventional HRM assay can identify N501Y variants.

Nutrient transfer from mother to embryo is essential for reproduction in viviparous animals. In the viviparous teleost Xenotoca eiseni (family Goodeidae), the intraovarian embryo intakes the maternal component secreted into the ovarian fluid via the trophotaenia. Our previous study reported that the epithelial layer cells of the trophotaenia incorporate a maternal protein via vesicle trafficking.

Osteoblasts arise from bone-surrounding connective tissue containing tenocytes and fibroblasts. Lineages of these cell populations and mechanisms of their differentiation are not well understood. Screening enhancer-trap lines of zebrafish allowed us to identify Ebf3 as a transcription factor marking tenocytes and connective tissue cells in skeletal muscle of embryos.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) constitutes a proper micro-environment for cell proliferation, migration and differentiation, as well as playing pivotal roles in developmental processes including endochondral ossification. Cartilage ECM is mainly composed of fibrous proteins, including collagen, proteoglycan, and hyaluronan. Because almost all ECM components are transported by intracellular vesicular transport systems, molecules that mediate vesicle transport are also important for endochondral ossification.

Kawasaki disease complicates with myocarditis and vasculitis. Even if myocarditis is asymptomatic, heterogeneity of ventricular repolarization may be increased in the acute phase. We evaluated whether the change in repolarization characteristics can be used as a predictor for myocarditis and coronary lesions.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile disease of unknown etiology that develops in children and is sometimes accompanied by myocardial dysfunction and systemic vasculitis. However, myocardial repolarization lability has not yet been fully investigated. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate myocardial repolarization lability (QT variability index-QTVI) based on the body surface electrocardiograms in the acute and recovery phases.

A high-voltage dc photocathode electron gun was successfully conditioned up to a voltage of 550 kV and a long-time holding test for 8 h was demonstrated at an acceleration voltage of 500 kV. The dc photocathode electron gun is designed for future light sources based on energy-recovery linac and consists of a Cockcroft-Walton generator, a segmented cylindrical ceramic insulator, guard-ring electrodes, a support-rod electrode, a vacuum chamber, and a pressurized insulating gas tank. The segmented cylindrical ceramic insulator and the guard-ring electrodes were utilized to prevent any damage to the insulator from electrons emitted by the support-rod electrode.

For high luminosity in electron-positron linear colliders, it is essential to generate low vertical emittance beams. We report on the smallest vertical emittance achieved in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility, which satisfies the requirement of the x-band linear collider. The emittances were measured with a laser-wire beam-profile monitor installed in the damping ring.

Background/aims: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is one of the major causes for chronic renal failure (CRF). Presence of massive proteinuria, hypertension, increased serum creatinine level and sclerotic histopathological changes of the glomerulus are known to be determinants for the progression of CRF. However, the relationships between duration of proteinuria/hematuria and histopathological changes, which may be correlated with the renal prognosis, have not been clarified.
