A 50-year-old man with a history of long-term corticosteroid treatment following adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus was admitted for an examination of an abnormal thoracic shadow. Cryptococcal serum antigens were positive, and the histopathology of a lung biopsy showed encapsulated yeast resembling Cryptococcus neoformans. On admission, the serum β-D-glucan level was approximately twice the cutoff value, several nodules were observed on both legs and magnetic resonance imaging revealed subcutaneous abscesses.

The pathogenesis of marrow dysfunction in MDS is multifactorial and consistent with a multistep model and may lead to heterogeneity of MDS. We investigated the proteome profile of circulating neutrophils purified from patients with refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia (RCMD) to identify proteins that have a role in the pathogenesis.

Microrheological methods that measure fluid viscosity via the translational diffusion of tracer particles are challenging to apply and interpret for membranes, due to uncertainty about the local environment of the tracers. Here, we demonstrate a new technique in which determination of both the rotational and translational diffusion coefficients of membrane-linked particles enables quantification of viscosity, measurement of the effective radii of the tracers, and assessment of theoretical models of membrane hydrodynamics.

Serial morphological changes in the cells induced by Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) included cytoplasmic vacuolar formation, cell rounding and detachment. Mature virions were purified from CyHV-3-infected CCF-K104 cells by sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation and had a typical herpesvirus structure on electron microscopy.

We performed further experiments to examine the localization of Rdd proteins in embryogenesis. Detection of tagged Rdd proteins expressed in blastomeres showed that Rdd proteins formed a high molecular weight complex and existed in the extracellular space.

However, no substance is known that prevents the aging of both body and brain. It is known that polyamine concentrations in somatic tissues (including the brain) decrease with increasing age, and polyamine-rich foods enhance longevity in yeast, worms, flies, and mice, and protect flies from age-induced memory impairment.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of combination therapy with an anti-influenza agent, oseltamivir, and a single-dose formulation of azithromycin (AZM), which has been used for influenza-related secondary pneumonia, on influenza patients. The primary endpoint was a change in the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines.

We conducted a case-control study in Japan to compare the mortality rates of patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia after the vaccines were administered and were not administered.
Methods: Between October 2009 and March 2010, we collected clinical records in Japan and conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study.
Background: Pneumococcal pneumonia often occurs secondary to influenza infection and accounts for a large proportion of the morbidity and mortality associated with seasonal and pandemic influenza outbreaks. Peramivir is a novel, intravenous neuraminidase inhibitor that exhibits potent antiviral activity against influenza A and B viruses. We investigated the efficacy of peramivir for modulating the severity of secondary pneumococcal pneumonia.

We examined all types of CPA cases with histopathological evidence to clarify the differences in pathogenesis and clinical features.
Method: We searched for cases diagnosed as pulmonary aspergillosis by histopathological examination in Nagasaki University Hospital between 1964 and September 2010.
Invasive pulmonary mucormycosis is a life-threatening fungal infection encountered in immunocompromised patients. An intravenous high-dose lipid formulation of amphotericin B, such as liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB), is the recommended treatment. The efficacy of inhaled L-AMB against mucormycosis has not been evaluated.

GSH is considered to be important for the control of immune responses. Antibody production in mice after infection is enhanced by the oral administration of CT.

The Ca(2+) content in the SR is known to be regulated by two factors: the activity of the Ca(2+) pump (SERCA) and Ca(2+) leak through the ryanodine receptor (RyR). However, the direct relationship between the SERCA activity and Ca(2+) leak has not been fully investigated in the heart.

Methods: Virologic and pathologic examinations were performed on the patient's samples.
Introduction: The Japanese Study Group for Pediatric Liver Tumor (JPLT) has conducted cooperative treatment studies on hepatoblastoma (HBL) since 1991. The JPLT2 protocol was launched in 1999 to evaluate the efficacy of cisplatin/pirarubicin (CITA) under risk stratification. European and North American groups showed the improvement of HBL patients by pre- and postoperative chemotherapeutic regimens.

To evaluate the feasibility of noninvasive measurement of MYCN amplification, we analyzed MYCN amplification in stored blood plasma samples.
Methods: We used quantitative real-time PCR to determine MYCN copy numbers in plasma-derived DNA of 10 healthy volunteers and 50 neuroblastoma cases.
Background: In Japan, hydrolyzed wheat proteins (HWP) have been reported to cause wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) by transcutaneous sensitization using HWP-containing soap. Patients develop allergic reactions not only with soap use, but also with exercise after the intake of wheat protein (WP). ω5-Gliadin and HMW-glutenin were identified as major allergens in conventional WP-WDEIA patients.

The role of low-frequency variants in type 1 diabetes (T1D) susceptibility still remains to be clarified. In the present study, we analyzed low-frequency variants of the T1D candidate genes in Japanese. We first screened for protein-changing variants of 24 T1D candidate genes in 96 T1D patients and 96 control subjects, and then the association with T1D was tested in 706 T1D patients and 863 control subjects recruited from the collaborating institutions in Japan.

The dynamical disorganizing effect of the push-pull azobenzene dye on the liquid crystalline order through its trans-cis-trans photoisomerizaion cycle under visible light was contributed to the efficient phase transition. Then, the effects of light irradiation on the motion of small objects dispersed in the liquid crystals containing the push-pull azobenzene were explored, and the manipulation and assembly of those objects were successfully achieved in the nematic phase but also in the smectic phase.

However, little is known about the role of protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) activated by adrenergic signaling on cardiac excitation-contraction coupling. A cytoplasmic tyrosine residue in β1-adrenoceptor is estimated to regulate Gs-protein binding affinity from crystal structure studies, but the signaling pathway leading to the phosphorylation of these residues is unknown.
