The compression behavior of iron oxyhydroxide ε-FeOOH is complex, with variations in its magnetic property and bonding character. In this study, in situ powder neutron diffraction experiments were conducted on ε-FeOOH and ε-FeOOD up to pressures exceeding 20 GPa to investigate a spin-reorientation (spin-flop) transition, hydrogen-bond (H-bond) symmetrization, and their correlation. The magnetic transition was observed at 8 GPa in both ε-FeOOH and ε-FeOOD.

Inhibition of the hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PHD) represents a promising strategy for discovering next-generation treatments for renal anemia. We identified a pyrimidine core with HIF-PHD inhibitory activity based on scaffold hopping of FG-2216 using crystal structures of HIF-PHD2 in complex with compound. By optimizing the substituents at the 2- and 6- positions of the pyrimidine core, we discovered DS44470011, which improves the effectiveness of erythropoietin (EPO) release in cells.

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, ethyl caprylate is produced by the esterification of caprylic acid, which is synthesized through the action of fatty acid synthase. A recent study reported a yeast mutant with a single nucleotide substitution in the alpha subunit of fatty acid synthase (FAS2) gene (F1279Y; 3836T>A) that produced large amounts of ethyl caprylate. Here, we designed two primer sets (P1/P2 and P3/P4) with mismatches that incorporate restriction sites for the enzymes NdeI and SspI, respectively and developed an easy and rapid polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay to identify yeasts harboring the FAS2-F1279Y mutation associated with high ethyl caprylate productivity.

Harmful algal blooms responsible for mass mortalities of marine organisms have been rare in Hokkaido, northern Japan, although fish-killing blooms have been frequently reported from western Japanese coasts. In September-November 2021, a huge and prolonged cold-water bloom occurred along the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido, and was associated with intensive mortalities of sea urchin, fish, octopus, shellfish, etc. In this study, morphology and phylogeny of the dominant and co-occurring unarmored dinoflagellates of the Kareniaceae in the bloom were examined by using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and molecular phylogeny inferred from ITS and LSU rDNA (D1-D3) sequences.

A one-pot transformation of biaryl dicarboxylic acids to ()-phenanthridinone derivatives based on a Curtius rearrangement and subsequent basic hydrolysis was developed.
