The origins and dispersal of the chicken across the ancient world remains one of the most enigmatic questions regarding Eurasian domesticated animals. The lack of agreement concerning timing and centers of origin is due to issues with morphological identifications, a lack of direct dating, and poor preservation of thin, brittle bird bones. Here we show that chickens were widely raised across southern Central Asia from the fourth century BC through medieval periods, likely dispersing along the ancient Silk Road.

We describe in detail a case of the anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) type of primary bone lymphoma, which initially was diagnosed and treated as osteomyelitis. The diagnosis was delayed because of unspecific clinical symptoms and uncertain radiographs and histology. Only relapse of the lymphoma from the same area with involvement of the soft tissue and local lymph nodes allowed to establish a correct diagnosis and start treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The NOvA experiment improved measurements of muon neutrino (ν_{μ}) to electron neutrino (ν_{e}) transitions, detecting 33 ν_{e} candidates amid a background of 8.2±0.8.
  • Combining this data with recent ν_{μ} disappearance results and reactor experiment constraints,
  • the study disfavored the inverted mass hierarchy scenario for neutrino mixing at over 93% confidence level across all values of the CP-violating phase (δ_{CP}).

This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of 6.05×10^{20} protons on target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal θ_{23} mixing (θ_{23}=π/4).

Vaccines explored for cancer therapy have been based generally on injectable vector systems used to control foreign infectious pathogens, to which the immune system evolved to respond naturally. However, these vectors may not be effective at presenting tumor-associated antigens (TAA) to the immune system in a manner that is sufficient to engender antitumor responses. We addressed this issue with a novel orally administered Salmonella-based vector that exploits a type III secretion system to deliver selected TAA in the cytosol of professional antigen-presenting cells in situ.

The authors carried out serologic examination of 202 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 200 healthy persons for detecting of specific markers of infections caused with herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV) and human T-cell lymphotropic retroviruses 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2). It was demonstrated that detecting frequencies of HBsAg and total antibodies to HTLV-1/2, HSV and CMV among RA patients and healthy persons were practical equal--only anti-EBV were detected more often among RA patients than among healthy persons. But in the same time IgM-antibodies to HSV, CMV and EBV were detected more often among RA patients than among healthy persons.

An algorithm for the detection of weight bearing on the lower extremity after total endoprosthesis of the hip joint was developed, taking into consideration the parameters of the morphometric structure, type of pathology, method of treatment, the resulting extremity functioning and social and every-day conditions. The individual rehabilitation measures after endoprosthesis were performed in three steps and corrected depending on changes in the parameters in question. The amplitude of movements in the joint after using the method of calculation of the weight bearing on the lower extremity became close to normal in 26 patients after completion of the rehabilitation course and the statistic-dynamic indices of the extremity became stable.

A comparative analysis of the treatment of 120 patients after endoprosthesis for degenerative-destructive diseases of the hip joint was carried on. All the patients were divided into two groups: the main group included 74 patients who underwent a full course of rehabilitation, the control group consisted of 46 patients without rehabilitation. The results of a comparative assessment of the static-dynamic function in the two groups of patients after operation of endoprosthesis have shown the inclusion of an obligatory program of rehabilitation to be expedient for the restorative treatment in addition to the operation of endoprosthesis.
