Objectives: The prevalence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) has increased significantly in Taiwan. We investigated the molecular epidemiology of clinical VREfm isolates to increase our understanding on their spread and changes in population structure over a 14-year span.

Methods: A total of 1113 E.

This study examines diatom assemblages in the Matsu Archipelago, an area influenced by Minjiang River runoff. It focuses on harmful algal blooms (HABs) that occurred between August 2021 and July 2022. Utilizing 18S rRNA metabarcoding and microscopic analysis, we observed a significant diatom bloom during early summer runoff, peaking at 5 × 10 cells L.

Unlabelled: Bacteremia is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The emergence of bacteria with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has further exacerbated the poor outcomes associated with bacteremia. The Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (TSAR) program was established in 1998 to monitor bacterial epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance trends across all patient types and age groups.

Background: Elizabethkingia spp. are emerging as nosocomial pathogens causing various infections. These pathogens express resistance to a broad range of antibiotics, thus requiring antimicrobial combinations for coverage.

Background: The blaB, blaGOB and blaCME genes are thought to confer β-lactam resistance to Elizabethkingia anophelis, based on experiments conducted primarily on Escherichia coli.

Objectives: To determine the individual contributions of β-lactamase genes to increased MICs in E. anophelis and to assess their impact on the in vivo efficacy of carbapenem therapy.

, a Gram-negative pathogen, causes infections such as bacteraemia, pneumonia, and neonatal meningitis. The pathogen resists most antimicrobial classes, making novel approaches urgently needed. In natural settings, Gram-negative bacteria secrete outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) that carry important molecules in the bacterial life cycle.

Two OR3 research vessel cruises were conducted at seven nearshore sites from north to south in the western coastal waters off Taiwan in May (late spring) and November (late autumn) 2019 in order to gain insights into the 2 °C difference in the tropical-subtropical fish fauna. Totally, 37 families, 72 genera, and 99 taxas were recorded for the 1809 fishes. Three fish assemblages, the North, South, and Fall-Zhuoshui River (ZRf) groups, were identified as eurythermal, stenothermal, and croaker communities.

Background: Early dietary intake enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). There remains a gap in the recognition and implementation of early diet after surgery in medical institutions in Taiwan. This study aimed to investigate whether early oral intake after benign gynecologic surgery results in favorable outcomes in Taiwanese patients.

The study aimed to assess the utilization of antenatal care services and its associated factors among pregnant women in Eswatini. A cross-sectional study was adopted. Convenience sampling was conducted in a public referral hospital in central Eswatini from 1st of August to the 30 of September 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • High-level levofloxacin-resistant group A Streptococcus was first identified in Taiwan in 2012, with a total of 24 isolates detected.
  • Most of these isolates (23) were linked to the emm12/ST36 strain and shared similar genetic mutations in GyrA and ParC, indicating a high level of genetic similarity.
  • These strains were found to be closely related to those involved in a scarlet fever outbreak in Hong Kong, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and surveillance.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes different screening and contact tracing strategies in various population sizes to understand how effectively they can contain epidemic outbreaks of infectious diseases, particularly before vaccines are available.
  • It finds that contact tracing alone is inadequate for controlling outbreaks during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, emphasizing the need for a combination of measures, including universal testing.
  • The research concludes that while universal testing can help identify asymptomatic cases, its impact on overall case reduction is minimal when combined with rigorous contact tracing and symptomatic screening, particularly in regions with low prevalence of COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • The emergence of antibiotic-resistant isolates has made it a major concern for global healthcare, particularly due to its biofilm formation which helps it survive against antibiotics.
  • A retrospective study involving 711 patients at five medical centers in Taiwan analyzed the clinical demographics and outcomes of those infected with biofilm-forming versus non-biofilm-forming isolates.
  • Results showed that while biofilm-forming isolates were linked to lower in-hospital mortality, factors like high APACHE II scores and carbapenem resistance were significant risk factors for mortality, with no major outcome differences between the two groups regarding biofilm formation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of minocycline, the only antibiotic that can treat Elizabethkingia anophelis, both alone and in combination with rifampin, against various strains of the bacteria.
  • It finds that while minocycline can modestly reduce bacterial growth and improve survival rates in infected models, its effectiveness decreases with mutations that lessen susceptibility.
  • The combination of minocycline and rifampin shows promise in preventing resistance development in lab tests, but does not offer additional survival benefits in real-life infection models.

Early administration of proper antibiotics is considered to improve the clinical outcomes of bacteremia (SAB), but routine clinical antimicrobial susceptibility testing takes an additional 24 h after species identification. Recent studies elucidated matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectra to discriminate methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) or even incorporated with machine learning (ML) techniques. However, no universally applicable mass peaks were revealed, which means that the discrimination model might need to be established or calibrated by local strains' data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes COVID-19 containment strategies across 50 regions from March 2020 to November 2021, focusing on both the pre-vaccine and vaccinating phases.
  • It introduces a measure called lockdown efficiency (LE) to assess how effective different government policies were in reducing case numbers, while also examining the role of hygiene education and other health indicators.
  • The results indicate that regions in Oceania and Asia excelled in pandemic response by implementing early non-pharmaceutical interventions, and emphasize the continued importance of these measures even after vaccination to combat emerging variants and vaccine hesitancy.

Several antimicrobial combination therapies are used to treat multiple drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) infections. A novel antibiotic, eravacycline, shows a higher potency than tigecycline. The efficacies of eravacycline-based therapies have not yet been evaluated.

Patients undergoing gynecological surgery commonly receive indwelling transurethral Foley catheters, however duration of catheterization is associated with risk of urinary tract infections and other adverse effects. Early removal of catheters is encouraged, however optimal timing postsurgery remains unclear. This quasi-experimental study compared outcomes for women after removal of a Foley catheter at two different times following benign gynecological surgery.

Infections caused by extensively drug-resistant (XDR) have become a challenging problem. The frequent use of colistin as the last resort drug for XDR bacteria has led to the emergence of colistin-resistant (ColRAN) in hospitals. The mechanism of colistin resistance in remains unclear.
