Foreign body aspiration is a worldwide health problem that often results in life-threatening complications. Although flexible bronchoscopy is a safe procedure for removal of foreign bodies, it is usually unsuccessful in removing large foreign bodies from the airway. Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, which is frequently used to remove foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract, has not been reported for retrieval of airway foreign bodies.

A phenomenological reaction-diffusion model that includes a nutrient-regulated growth rate of tumor cells is proposed to investigate the morphological instability of solid tumors during the avascular growth. We find that the surface instability could be induced more easily when tumor cells are placed in a harsher nutrient-deficient environment, while the instability is suppressed for tumor cells in a nutrient-rich environment due to the nutrient-regulated proliferation. In addition, the surface instability is shown to be influenced by the growth moving speed of tumor rims.

The spatial critical shelter sizes above which populations would survive are investigated for the infection of hantavirus among rodent populations surrounded by a deadly environment. We show that the critical shelter sizes for the infected population and the susceptible population are different due to symmetry breaking in the reproduction and the transmission processes. Therefore, there exists a shelter size gap within which the infected population becomes extinct while only the susceptible population survives.

The individual difference, particularly in drivers' distance perception, is introduced in the microscopic one-dimensional optimal velocity model to investigate its effect on the onset of the jamming instability seen in traffic systems. We show analytically and numerically that the individual difference helps to inhibit the traffic jam at high vehicle densities while it promotes jamming transition at low vehicle densities. In addition, the jamming mechanism is further investigated by tracking how the spatial disturbance travels through traffics.

Bacterial pneumonia is a lethal condition, and approximately 40% of bacterial pneumonia patients experience parapneumonic effusion (PPE). Based on the severity of inflammation, PPEs can be categorized as early-stage uncomplicated PPE (UPPE), advanced-stage complicated PPE (CPPE) and, most seriously, thoracic empyema. Appropriate antibiotic treatment at the early stage of PPE can prevent PPE progression and reduce mortality, indicating that understanding PPE generation and components can help researchers develop corresponding treatment strategies for PPE.

We study pattern formation of skin cancers by means of numerical simulation of a binary system consisting of cancer and healthy cells. We extend the conventional model H for macrophase separations by considering a logistic growth of cancer cells and also a mechanical friction between dermis and epidermis. Importantly, our model exhibits a microphase separation due to the proliferation of cancer cells.

We investigate synchronization and plateau splitting of coupled oscillators on a one-dimensional lattice with long-range interactions that decay over distance as a power law. We show that in the thermodynamic limit the dynamics of systems of coupled oscillators with power-law exponent α≤1 is identical to that of the all-to-all coupling case. For α>1, oscillatory behavior of the phase coherence appears as a result of single plateau splitting into multiple plateaus.

GPR56 is a multi-functional adhesion-class G protein-coupled receptor involved in biological systems as diverse as brain development, male gonad development, myoblast fusion, hematopoietic stem cell maintenance, tumor growth and metastasis, and immune-regulation. Ectodomain shedding of human GPR56 receptor has been demonstrated previously, however the quantitative detection of GPR56 receptor shedding has not been investigated fully due to the lack of appropriate assays. Herein, an efficient system of expression and immune-affinity purification of the recombinant soluble extracellular domain of human GPR56 (sGPR56) protein from a stably transduced human melanoma cell line was established.

Phase-field crystal (PFC) models are able to resolve atomic length scale features of materials during temporal evolution over diffusive time scales. Traditional PFC models contain solid and liquid phases, however many important materials processing phenomena involve a vapor phase as well. In this work, we add a vapor phase to an existing PFC model and show realistic interfacial phenomena near the triple point temperature.

We present a case of a 58-year-old man who experienced Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia after a 3-month exposure to polyester powder paint. Mineralogical analysis by transmission electron microscopy of a pulmonary sample and the polyester powder paint he was exposed to showed the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in both. We suggest that exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles should be added to the etiology of Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia.

Background: Pericardial effusion occurs frequently in patients with hypothyroidism and is typically mild. Although extremely uncommon, massive pericardial effusion can compromise hemodynamics and cause cardiac tamponade. Reduced plasma volume has been reported to induce cardiac tamponade in massive pericardial effusion, but to our knowledge, hypovolemia-induced cardiac tamponade has not been reported in cases of hypothyroidism with pericardial effusion.

Rectus sheath hematoma is an uncommon but well-described complication of a tussive paroxysm. It is an accumulation of blood within the sheath of the rectus abdominis secondary to disruption of the epigastric vessels or the rectus muscle and is often misdiagnosed as acute abdomen. Increases in the number of elderly patients and the use of therapeutic anticoagulation may increase the prevalence and severity of rectus sheath hematomas encountered in clinical practice.

We investigate the possibility to control the symmetry of ordered states in phase-field crystal models by tuning nonlinear resonances. In two dimensions, we find that a state of square symmetry as well as the coexistence between squares and hexagons can be easily obtained. In contrast, it is delicate to obtain the coexistence of squares and liquid.
