Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated trends and disparities in antiretroviral therapy (ART) prescription rates among US Medicare enrollees with HIV from 2007 to 2019.
  • It found that while overall ART prescriptions increased, certain groups, particularly females and younger or older patients, had lower prescription rates.
  • Key factors contributing to lower ART use included race, multimorbidity (conditions like dementia and substance use), and lack of financial assistance through Part D, highlighting the need for further research to address these disparities.

Older adults are at high risk of experiencing injury, exacerbations of their chronic conditions, and death when evacuations are ordered because of hurricanes or natural disasters. The Homebound seniors residing in Galveston County are at a particularly high risk of morbidity and mortality during evacuations for hurricanes. This paper described the impact of a quality improvement intervention designed and implemented by nurse practitioners during the 2022 and 2023 hurricane season.

Article Synopsis
  • Older patients with cancer face increased risks of febrile neutropenia and treatment delays, leading to poorer health outcomes, making G-CSF essential for those aged 65 and older receiving chemotherapy with a high FN risk.
  • A study used SEER-Medicare data from 2010-2019 to analyze the use of G-CSF across different age groups among cancer patients, finding that overall, 41.4% of patients received G-CSF, but usage decreased significantly with age.
  • Factors influencing G-CSF usage included cancer type, with greater use in breast cancer and NHL patients, and demographics, as females, married individuals, and patients with fewer health issues were more likely to receive it, highlighting

Background: Accurate prediction of subject recruitment, which is critical to the success of a study, remains an ongoing challenge. Previous prediction models often rely on parametric assumptions which are not always met or may be difficult to implement. We aim to develop a novel method that is less sensitive to model assumptions and relatively easy to implement.

Background: While cervical cancer incidence rates (IR) in the United States have dropped in the last 20 years, non-cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) associated cancers increased. Many people in Texas (TX) live in medically underserved areas and have higher risk of developing HPV-associated cancers. Since previous studies of these regions focused on cervical cancer, we included other HPV-associated cancers in our analysis of IR in East TX and the TX-Mexico Border compared to other TX regions.

Introduction: Statins and testosterone replacement therapy (TTh) have been inconsistently associated with a reduced risk of hormone-related cancers (HRCs, prostate [PCa], colorectal [CRC], and male breast cancers [BrCa]). Yet, the joint association of statins and TTh with the incidence of these cancers, and whether these associations vary by race, remains poorly understood. The objective of this retrospective cohort study is to examine the independent and joint effects of pre-diagnostic use of statins and TTh on the risk of HRCs, including PCa, CRC, and male BrCa.

Background: Kidney transplant recipients (KTR) have elevated risks of cervical precancers and cancers and guidelines recommend more frequent cervical cancer screening exams. However, little is known about current trends in cervical cancer screening in this unique population. We described patterns in the uptake of cervical cancer screening exams among female KTRs and identified factors associated with screening utilization.

Objectives: With the exception of states that require licensure, there is no uniform requirement for certification or for education from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited laboratory science program for employment in a laboratory, under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988. The objective of the Value of Education and Certification (VEC) study was to determine if lack of NAACLS-accredited education and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification was associated with laboratory errors.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used personnel and testing/reporting error data from 739 laboratorians, involving five laboratory partners.

A timely response to patient-initiated telephone calls can affect many aspects of patient health, including quality of care and health equity. Historically, at a family medicine residency clinic, at least 1 out of 4 patient calls remained unresolved three days after the call was placed. We sought to explore whether there were differential delays in resolution of patient concerns for certain groups and how these were affected by quality improvement interventions to increase responsiveness to patient calls.

Background: Older cancer survivors likely experience physical function limitations due to cancer and its treatments, leading to disability and early mortality. Existing studies have focused on factors associated with surgical complications and mortality risk rather than factors associated with the development of poor disability status (DS), a proxy measure of poor performance status, in cancer survivors. We aimed to identify factors associated with the development of poor DS among older survivors of colorectal cancer (CRC) and compare poor DS rates to an age-sex-matched, non-cancer cohort.
