Background: The impact of etiologies of acute fulminant myocarditis (AFM), which requires extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), on clinical outcomes remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for ECMO weaning and mortality among patients with AFM due to viral etiologies in a tertiary referral medical center.
Methods: We included 33 adults with AFM who received ECMO and were admitted between January 2002 and January 2021.
Background: Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) have heterogeneous outcomes. As risk stratification mostly focuses on left-side myocardial function, we sought to investigate the prognostic value of right ventricular (RV) function in patients with HCM.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients with HCM.
Background: This study aimed to identify the risk factors for permanent stoma (PS) in patients who underwent sphincter-saving operations for rectal cancer.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 597 consecutive patients with rectal cancer from January 2012 to December 2020 at Taipei Medical University Hospital. Univariate and multivariable analyses were used to analyze risk factors for PS.
Purpose: Most blunt thoracic aortic injuries (BTAIs) may be treated using thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), and most blunt abdominal traumas (BATs) are managed conservatively. We hypothesized that severe trauma that needs TEVAR may increase the risk of delayed intra-abdominal hemorrhage in patients with concomitant BTAI and BAT because of the potential hemorrhagic shock, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, blood loss, consequent need for blood transfusion, and procedure-associated heparinization.
Materials And Methods: From 2015 to 2019, blunt trauma patients with concomitant severe chest trauma and abdominal trauma who could be managed conservatively were studied.
Objective: Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is a challenging scenario in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Considering that outcomes of treatment modalities stratified by LM chronological patterns related to brain metastasis (BM) are lacking, the aim of this study was to evaluate outcomes and explore prognostic factors.
Methods: The authors retrospectively collected data of patients with NSCLC undergoing Ommaya reservoir implantation, ventriculoperitoneal shunt implantation, or lumboperitoneal shunt implantation.
This paper presents an integrated and scalable precision health service for health promotion and chronic disease prevention. Continuous real-time monitoring of lifestyle and environmental factors is implemented by integrating wearable devices, open environmental data, indoor air quality sensing devices, a location-based smartphone app, and an AI-assisted telecare platform. The AI-assisted telecare platform provided comprehensive insight into patients' clinical, lifestyle, and environmental data, and generated reliable predictions of future acute exacerbation events.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmyloidosis cardiomyopathy is a rare and underdiagnosed disease characterized by amyloid fibril deposition in the myocardium. The diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis is often delayed due to a lack of awareness and the necessity of biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Recent advances in cardiovascular imaging modalities have enhanced earlier recognition of this disease.

This prompted development of an in-person surgical skills course as guided by the General Medical Council "Outcomes for Graduates" facilitated by tutors with surgical experience.

We aimed to compare the efficacy of CA with medical therapy (MT) in AF patients with HFmrEF.
Methods And Results: We retrospectively screened a total of 36 879 patients with AF between 2005 and 2020.
Mood disorders are an important public health issue and recent advances in genomic studies have indicated that molecules involved in neurodevelopment are causally related to mood disorders. BLM-s (BCL-2-like molecule, small transcript isoform), a BH3-only proapoptotic BCL-2 family member, mediates apoptosis of postmitotic immature neurons during embryonic cortical development, but its role in the adult brain is unknown. To better understand the physiological role of Blm-s gene in vivo, we generated a Blm-s-knockout (Blm-s) mouse.

Background: Approximately 20 percent of patients with a tumour localized in the low rectum still encounter the possibility of requiring permanent stoma (PS), which can cause drastic changes in lifestyle and physical perceptions.
Aim: To determine the risk factors for PS and to develop a prediction model to predict the probability of PS in rectal cancer patients after sphincter-saving surgery.
Methods: A retrospective cohort of 421 rectal cancer patients who underwent radical surgery at Taipei Medical University Hospital between January 2012 and December 2020 was included in this study.
Background: to compare the 52-week effectiveness and safety between HYAJOINT Plus (HJP) and Durolane in knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. Methods: consecutive patients received a single injection of 3 mL HJP or Durolane. The primary outcome was a visual analog scale (VAS) pain measurement at 26 weeks post-injection.

A major problem is patients' adherence and acceptance of WDs given that they are already experiencing a disease burden and treatment side effects. This scoping review explored the use of wrist-worn devices in the cancer population, with a special focus on adherence and clinical outcomes.

Background: The substrate and ablation outcome in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) with or without right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is unclear.
Objective: We aimed to investigate ablation outcome and substrate in ARVC patients with or without RV dysfunction.
Methods: We retrospectively studied ARVC patients with (group 1) or without RV dysfunction (group 2) undergoing substrate mapping/ablation.
Introduction: In 2019, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) established a new requirement that all hospitals publish information on the standard costs of services provided. Increased price transparency allows patients to compare healthcare costs and make informed decisions about their care. We investigated compliance with this rule with regards to laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a commonly performed operation and one of the 70 shoppable services (SSs) included in the CMS requirement, among prominent hospitals in the United States.

However, rare evidence of this combination in treating tendinopathy has been reported. We hypothesized that the specific formulations of cHA and dexamethasone (DEX) conferred amelioration of tendinopathy via anti-apoptosis and anti-senescence.

Recombinant HGF reduced MCAo-induced TNFα and IL1β expression, and alleviated perilesional reactivation of microglia and astrocyte. All of the aforementioned beneficial effects of HGF were antagonized by an inhibitor to the type II transmembrane serine protease matriptase (MTP).

This study investigates the differences between using a new SRS MapCHECK (SRSMC) system and an anthropomorphic phantom film-based system in a large network with different SRS delivery techniques.
Methods And Materials: Three SRS capable Linacs (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) at three different regional sites were chosen to represent a hospital network, a Trilogy with an M120 multi-leaf collimator (MLC), a TrueBeam with an M120 MLC, and a TrueBeam Stx with an HD120 MLC.

Methods: Using TaIwan Network of Targeted Temperature ManagEment for CARDiac Arrest (TIMECARD) registry, we recruited adult patients who received targeted temperature management in nine medical centers between January 2014 and September 2019.
Purpose: To compare the clinical effectiveness of branded versus generic piperacillin-tazobactam for treating severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
Patients And Methods: We identified patients with severe CAP who received piperacillin-tazobactam based on a nine-center registry database. Furthermore, we classified the patients in three hospitals, which used only branded piperacillin-tazobactam as the study group, and the patients in six other hospitals, which used both branded and generic products as the control group.
