Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a promising new treatment for different types of cancer. The infectious complications in patients taking ICIs are rare.

Case Report: A 58-year-old male who received chemotherapy consisting of pembrolizumab (PD-1 inhibitor) for esophagus squamous cell carcinoma one month before was admitted to the emergency room with shortness of breath soon after fiberoptic bronchoscopy, which was done for the inspection of the lower airway.

Factors Related to Resuscitation Success and Prognosis of Cardiopulmonary Arrest Cases.

Background: In cases where return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) is provided in the Emergency Department (ED) after cardiopulmonary arrest (CA), it is important to investigate the parameters affecting ROSC rates, to determine the factors affecting the survival status and prognosis in the short and medium term, and to determine to what extent these factors affect the prognosis.

Materials And Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that retrospectively investigates the factors affecting the success of resuscitation over a 5-year period in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) cases.

The Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding is an ongoing problem all over the world. The scoring systems are available for the detection of this problem. This study aims to test the applicability of the National Emergency Department Overcrowding Study (NEDOCS) scoring system, one of the scoring systems that evaluate the ED overcrowding.

The determinants of neurological phenotypes during acute hypertensive crises - a preliminary study.

: Acute blood pressure elevations lead to wide spectrum of neurologic manifestations, ranging from no overt neurologic symptoms to catastrophic events like ICH. Little is known regarding the determinants of this clinical variability. We determined clinical and imaging features of hypertensive crisis patients with normal neurological examination, ICH and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES).

Certain new bounds considering the weighted Simpson-like type inequality and applications.

We investigate a weighted Simpson-type identity and obtain new estimation-type results related to the weighted Simpson-like type inequality for the first-order differentiable mappings. We also present some applications to -divergence measures and to higher moments of continuous random variables.

On new inequalities of Hermite-Hadamard-Fejer type for harmonically convex functions via fractional integrals.

In this paper, firstly, new Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities for harmonically convex functions in fractional integral forms are given. Secondly, Hermite-Hadamard-Fejer inequalities for harmonically convex functions in fractional integral forms are built. Finally, an integral identity and some Hermite-Hadamard-Fejer type integral inequalities for harmonically convex functions in fractional integral forms are obtained.

Evaluation of gunshot wounds in the emergency department.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate injury patterns of patients admitted to the emergency department with gunshot wounds, results of imaging studies, treatment modalities, outcomes, mortality ratios, and complications.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out including a total number of one hundred and forty-two patients admitted to Hacettepe University Emergency Department with gunshot injuries between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2013. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), Revised Trauma Score (RTS), Injury Severity Score (ISS), and the Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) probability of survival for penetrating trauma were calculated for all patients.

Parameters predicting follicular carcinoma in thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology.

Aim: To determine the parameters supporting the malignancy by comparing demographic features of patients and nodule features in malign and benign nodules according to the pathology results after thyroidectomy in patients with the suspicious fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) results for follicular neoplasia.

Material And Method: Thyroidectomy performed 152 cases with the suspicion of follicular carcinoma owing to the FNAB results were included in the study. Age, radiation exposure history, and serum TSH levels of patients were recorded as well as the ultrasound findings of nodules as nodule count, diameter, internal structure, echogenicity, border features, presence of peripheral halo, and presence of internal micro calcifications.

The Effects of Direct Oxygen Supply During Static Cold Preservation of Rat Livers: An Experimental Study.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the biochemical and histopathologic effects of direct oxygen supply to the preservation fluid of static cold storage system with a simple method on rat livers.

Materials And Methods: Sixteen rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: the control group, which contained Ringer's lactate as preservation fluid; and the oxygen group, which contained oxygen and Ringer's lactate for preservation. Each liver was placed in a bag containing 50 mL Ringer's lactate and placed in ice-filled storage containers.

ULTRAPRO Hernia System versus lichtenstein repair in treatment of primary inguinal hernias: a prospective randomized controlled study.

The Lichtenstein repair has been recommended as the gold standard for inguinal hernia repair. However, postoperative discomfort still constitutes a concern and an area for improvement. New mesh materials have been continuously introduced to achieve this goal.

Emergency admissions due to swallowed foreign bodies in adults.

Aim: To study a retrospective analysis of patients who presented to the emergency departments (ED) with complaints related to foreign body ingestions.

Methods: Patients older than 16 years of age who presented to the ED between January 1(st) and December 31(st) of 2010 with complaints related to swallowed foreign bodies were identified from electronic health records and patient charts.

Results: A total of 100 patients presented with a complaint of foreign body ingestion during the study period.

Background: To compare ESI Five-Level Triage System with 5-Level Hacettepe Emergency Triage System (HETS), which was developed for Overcrowded EDs in our country.

Methods: Over a period of six days, patients were assessed by a different ED staff everyday using HETS, then re-evaluated blindly by an emergency physician using HETS. Then patients were evaluated blindly for a third time by an independent, ESI-using emergency physician.

Cardiac monitoring in patients with electrocution injury.

Background: The necessity of admitting patients exposed to electrocution injuries for monitoring and observation in the emergency department (ED) remains controversial.

Methods: We evaluated the medical records of 102 patients (86 male, 16 female; median age 29.5; range 18 to 68 years) admitted to the adult ED with electrocution injuries over the past 20 years.

Hyponatremic encephalopathy after excessive water ingestion prior to pelvic ultrasound: neuroimaging findings.

We report two patients with acute hyponatremic encephalopathy which developed after massive water ingestion for pelvic ultrasound and emphasize the findings of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Both subjects had completely recovered within 24 hours following fluid restriction and salt replacement. MR imaging revealed cortical sulcal narrowing, restricted diffusion and sulcal T2 hyperintensity along with diffuse pial enhancement suggesting diffuse cerebral cortical cytotoxic edema and blood-brain barrier breakdown.

The relationship between B-type natriuretic peptide levels and echocardiographic parameters in patients with heart failure admitted to the emergency department.

Objective: Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a peptide, which has recently been used in the differential diagnosis and follow-up of patients with heart failure. Our aim in the present prospective and diagnostic designed study is to investigate the role of BNP in determining the etiology of dyspnea and to evaluate its relation with newer echocardiographic parameters.

Methods: Thirty-four patients presenting to the emergency department with dyspnea and fulfilling the Framingham criteria for heart failure were included in the study.

Background: Speaker detection is an important component of many human-computer interaction applications, like for example, multimedia indexing, or ambient intelligent systems. This work addresses the problem of detecting the current speaker in audio-visual sequences. The detector performs with few and simple material since a single camera and microphone meets the needs.

Visually improved image compression by combining a conventional wavelet-codec with texture modeling.

Human observers are very sensitive to a loss of image texture in photo-realistic images. For example a portrait image without the fine skin texture appears unnatural. Once the image is decomposed by a wavelet transformation, this texture is represented by many wavelet coefficients of low- and medium-amplitude.

Integer wavelet transform for embedded lossy to lossless image compression.

The use of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for embedded lossy image compression is now well established. One of the possible implementations of the DWT is the lifting scheme (LS). Because perfect reconstruction is granted by the structure of the LS, nonlinear transforms can be used, allowing efficient lossless compression as well.

An open Internet platform to distributed image processing applied to dermoscopy.

Proprietary systems for dermoscopy images analysis are available to improve the diagnosis and follow-up of the pigmented skin lesions. Their performance seems comparable with that of a human expert. Progress in computer-aided classification of melanocytic lesions depends notably on judicious choices of the algorithms dedicated to the extraction of signs from the dermoscopy images and of the method which combines these signs to classify the lesions.

Train-pedestrian accidents.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the injury pattern, morbidity, and mortality in pedestrians involved in train accidents. The study was performed in the Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Turkey. Hospital records of 41 cases who were hit by train between the period of 1985-97 were evaluated.
