Unlabelled: Immune cell function is impaired in hyperglycemic patients with diabetes but thought to improve with normalization of blood glucose levels. In this study, we hypothesized that this improvement might involve changes in T cell function. We compared the peripheral T cell markers between the people with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D) admitted to our hospital for glycemic control, and then in patients with T2D before and after the improvement of hyperglycemia by inpatient treatment.

Ti6Al4V alloy orthopedic implants are widely used as Ti6Al4V alloy is a biocompatible material and resistant to corrosion. However, Ti6Al4V alloy has higher Young's modulus compared with human bone. The difference of elastic modulus between bone and titanium alloy may evoke clinical problems because of stress shielding.

Background: Adefovir dipivoxil is a nucleotide analogue that is approved for treatment of chronic hepatitis B. Adefovir dipivoxil is associated with proximal tubular dysfunction, resulting in Fanconi syndrome, which can cause secondary hypophosphatemic osteomalacia. We describe a case of a patient with hypophosphatemic osteomalacia secondary to Fanconi syndrome induced by adefovir dipivoxil concomitantly with osteoporosis in whom clinical symptoms were improved by adding denosumab (a human monoclonal antibody targeting the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand) to preceding administration of vitamin D.

This study developed support software for liver surgeons; the software can apply potential functions to blood vessels and cancerous tissue and can adjust repulsion and attraction accordingly. Thus, the scalpel can be directly provided with the power to operate on cancerous cells only from a fixed distance, and accidental cutting of blood vessels can be avoided. The direct support provided by this force navigation allows physicians to safely and reliably navigate past blood vessel groups in order to precisely perform excision surgery for liver cancer.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a Gram-positive soil bacterium that is known to be a bacterial biopesticide that produces insecticidal proteins called crystal proteins (Cry). In the insecticidal process, chitinases are suggested to perforate the peritrophic membrane barrier to facilitate the invasion of the Cry proteins into epithelial membranes. A chitinase gene from B.

Phase-contrast X-ray imaging using a crystal X-ray interferometer can depict the fine structures of biological objects without the use of a contrast agent. To obtain higher image contrast, fixation techniques have been examined with 100% ethanol and the commonly used 10% formalin, since ethanol causes increased density differences against background due to its physical properties and greater dehydration of soft tissue. Histological comparison was also performed.

Recently, a remnant-preserving anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction technique has been developed. However, the preoperative condition of remnant ACL is occasionally difficult to evaluate by magnetic resonance imaging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of pre-operative visualization of remnant ACL using three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT).

We applied Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment using Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) cells. A DNA aptamer was identified and evaluated by fluorescent confocal microscopy and flow cytometry. Our results showed that the DNA aptamer binds to molecules that exist predominantly on target SCLC cell surfaces compared with other types of SCLC cells.

Myxofibrosarcoma or myxoid malignant fibrous histiocytoma is one of the most common fibroblastic sarcomas in older patients. It is characterized by a tendency for predominantly subcutaneous, multinodular, diffusely infiltrative growth, which may extend to the overlying dermis and present as a cutaneous lesion. Histologically, it comprises a spectrum ranging from hypocellular low-grade myxoid to high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma.

Authors examined a possible interaction between enoxacin, an inhibitor of cytochrome P4501A2, and fluvoxamine (FLV), a substrate for this enzyme. Ten healthy male volunteers received enoxacin 200 mg/d or placebo for 11 days in a double-blind randomized crossover manner, and on the eighth day they received a single oral 50-mg dose of FLV. Blood samplings and pharmacodynamic evaluation were conducted up to 72 hours after FLV dosing.

A novel ethanol-hypersensitive mutant, geko1 (gek1), was isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana. The gek1 mutant displays an enhanced sensitivity (10-100 times greater than the wild type) to ethanol in growth medium, while it grows normally in the absence of ethanol, and responds normally to other alcohols and to environmental stresses such as heat shock and high salinity. The ethanol-hypersensitive phenotype of gek1 requires alcohol dehydrogenase activity, indicating that gek1 is sensitive not to ethanol itself but to the metabolites of ethanol.

A novel ethanol-hypersensitive mutant, gek1, of Arabidopsis shows 10-100 times greater sensitivity to ethanol compared to the wild type, while it grows normally in the absence of ethanol, and responds normally to other alcohols and to environmental stresses such as heat shock and high salinity. Mapping of the gek1 locus indicated it is a previously unreported locus. In order to address the GEK1 function, we identified the GEK1 gene by means of map-based cloning.

Background: The functional characteristics of the stratum corneum (SC) of fresh scars as well as keloids and hypertrophic scars are characterized by elevated transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and increased SC hydration.

Objectives: To study the composition of the intercellular lipids and maturation properties of the cornified envelope (CE) of the SC, as these are the most important components for the SC barrier function in fresh scars.

Methods: SC lipids were extracted from the donor site for split-thickness skin grafting soon after re-epithelialization using a cup method, and were analysed with high-performance thin-layer chromatography.

In spite of the progress of digital camera technology, photography of the endoscopic picture, with a digital still camera, has not spread in the urologic setting. We attempted to photograph an endoscopic picture with a consumer-grade digital camera. An attachment was produced by pasting step-up rings for digital cameras on a coupler, or eye piece, for endoscopes.

The design and fabrication of teeth restorations in dentistry rely increasingly on CAD/CAM techniques. We present an approach for interactive design of the occlusal surface of teeth based on simulation of jaw articulation and computer-aided diagnosis of occlusal disorders. To bridge the cognitive gap between the dentist and the computer system, we propose a virtual reality user interface, which applies the metaphors of tools and techniques known in dentistry.
