Article Synopsis
  • Retinal prosthesis, specifically the Okayama University-type retinal prosthesis (OUReP), offers a potential treatment for outer retinal degeneration from diseases like hereditary retinal dystrophy and age-related macular degeneration by generating electric potentials in response to light to stimulate remaining neurons.
  • The OUReP was tested in monkey eyes with induced macular degeneration, with both a 1-month and a 6-month observation period showing recovery in visual evoked potentials and structural integrity of the inner retinal layer after implantation.
  • Pathological analyses indicated that the implanted films maintained their function and did not exhibit retinal toxicity, showcasing their promise for restoring vision in patients with conditions characterized by photoreceptor loss.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ramelteon 4, 8, 16 or 32 mg and placebo in Japanese patients with chronic insomnia using a randomized, double-blind, five-period crossover design. A total of 65 Japanese patients with chronic primary insomnia received ramelteon or placebo for two nights each in sleep laboratories. Changes in sleep parameters were assessed objectively by polysomnography and subjectively by postsleep questionnaires.
