Abdominal and pelvic abscesses occur in approximately 10-30% of Crohn's disease patients during the course of the disease; most of these abscesses have an enteric communication. For this condition, percutaneous abscess drainage (PAD) rather than emergency surgery has recently been recognized as a valuable procedure for initial treatment. However, in cases wherein the abscess is accompanied by an enteric fistula, the recurrence of abscess might be inevitable without the management of the enteric fistula.

A 56-year-old man, who had been complaining of diarrhea for several months, was admitted for further examination of a hepatic tumor. A needle biopsy of the hepatic tumor suggested metastatic carcinoid tumor. The primary tumor was found in the ileum by extracorporeal sonographic examination and a barium meal study.

Pigment gallstones have been reported to be closely associated with biliary tract infection. We previously reported that addition of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB), which is deconjugated by beta-glucuronidase in infected bile, could enhance cholesterol crystal formation in supersaturated model bile (MB). The present study evaluated the effect of beta-glucuronidase on the processes of pigment gallstone formation and cholesterol crystallization.
