Perceptions of Lactation Experience Among Neurology Faculty and Impact of Lactation Time on Academic Achievement at U.S. Academic Medical Centers.

To investigate the perceptions of lactation experiences of neurology faculty and the impact of lactation time on academic achievement. This was a cross-sectional study utilizing a survey administered across 19 academic neurology centers in the United States. Respondents self-identified as having children and answered questions about lactation at work.

Enhancing barrier properties of cellulose propionate films through the integration of ionic liquid: A study on water pressure resistance.

This study pioneers the production of porous cellulose propionate (CP) films enhanced with tetrabutylammonium styrenesulfonate ([N][SS]), an ionic liquid, to bolster their resistance against water pressure. In contrast to polymer films with ionic liquids that have high moisture permeability, the CP/[N][SS] films exhibit remarkable water resistance even under 8 bar pressure. This is due to the physical cross-linking between the [N] ions and CP's polar groups, limiting CP chain mobility and thus reducing water interaction.

Analysis of Faculty Gender and Race in Scholarly Achievements in Academic Neurology.

Intersection of gender and race and/or ethnicity in academic medicine is understudied; we aim to understand these factors in relation to scholarly achievements for neurology faculty. Faculty from 19 US neurology departments completed a survey (2021-2022) to report rank, leadership positions, publications, funded projects, awards, and speaker invitations. Regression analyses examined effects of gender, race, and their intersectionality on these achievements.

Modeling of Intracellular Taurine Levels Associated with Ovarian Cancer Reveals Activation of p53, ERK, mTOR and DNA-Damage-Sensing-Dependent Cell Protection.

Taurine, a non-proteogenic amino acid and commonly used nutritional supplement, can protect various tissues from degeneration associated with the action of the DNA-damaging chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin. Whether and how taurine protects human ovarian cancer (OC) cells from DNA damage caused by cisplatin is not well understood. We found that OC ascites-derived cells contained significantly more intracellular taurine than cell culture-modeled OC.

Enhancing CA-based separators with thermo-responsive ionic liquids: A path to eco-friendly membrane production and multifaceted applications.

We synthesized a temperature-responsive ionic liquid, [N][SS], and incorporated it into an environmentally friendly cellulose acetate (CA)-based battery separator. A pore was formed in the battery separator by [N][SS], which pierced a plasticized part due to water pressure. Varying drying temperatures during membrane fabrication revealed that the CA/[N][SS] membrane dried at 50 °C exhibited greater thickness and a smaller average pore size, resulting in an asymmetric internal structure.

Cervicogenic Headaches: A Literature Review and Proposed Multifaceted Approach to Diagnosis and Management.

Cervicogenic headaches are a secondary headache disorder attributable to cervical spine dysfunction resulting in head pain with or without neck pain. Diagnosis of this condition has been complicated by varied clinical presentations, causations, and differing diagnostic criteria. In this article, we aim to clarify the approach to diagnosing cervicogenic headaches by providing an overview of cervicogenic headaches, clinical case examples, and a practical diagnostic algorithm based on the most current criteria.

Addressing unprofessional behaviors in the clinical learning environment: lessons from a multi-year virtual, intergenerational, interdisciplinary workshop.

Introduction: Optimizing the clinical learning environment (CLE) is a medical education priority nationwide.

Materials And Methods: We developed a virtual, one-hour workshop engaging students, housestaff and faculty in small-group discussions of five case scenarios adapted from reported unprofessional behaviors in the CLE, plus didactics regarding mistreatment, microaggressions and bystander interventions.

Results: Over two sessions (2021-2022), we engaged 340 students and 73 faculty/housestaff facilitators.

Convergent Syntheses of Isomeric Imidazolospiroketones as Templates for Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (ACC) Inhibitors.

The synthesis of imidazole fused spirocyclic ketones as templates for acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) inhibitors is reported. By completing the spirocyclic ring closure via divergent pathways, the synthesis of these regioisomers from common intermediates was developed. Through an aldehyde homologation/transmetalation strategy, one isomer was formed selectively.

Highly Visible Wall-Timer to Reduce Endovascular Treatment Time for Stroke.

Background: Endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke has revolutionized clinical care for patients with stroke and large vessel occlusion, but treatment remains time sensitive. At our stroke center, up to half of the door-to-groin time is accounted for after the patient arrives in the angio-suite. Here, we apply the concept of a highly visible timer in the angio-suite to quantify the impact on endovascular treatment time.

Interprofessional Education on the Neurology Clerkship for Physical Therapy and Medical Students.

Introduction: Globally, neurological disorders make up the second most common cause of death and are the leading cause of years lived with disability. Because neurological patients often require multidisciplinary care and future professionals will encounter increasing demands for neurological care, it is important to emphasize education on the interaction between physical therapy (PT) and neurology. Yet there is a dearth of interprofessional education (IPE) learning activities that include neurology clerkship students and physical therapists.

Discovery of the Potent and Selective MC4R Antagonist PF-07258669 for the Potential Treatment of Appetite Loss.

The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) is a centrally expressed, class A GPCR that plays a key role in the regulation of appetite and food intake. Deficiencies in MC4R signaling result in hyperphagia and increased body mass in humans. Antagonism of MC4R signaling has the potential to mitigate decreased appetite and body weight loss in the setting of anorexia or cachexia due to underlying disease.

Intra-arterial Bevacizumab for Posterior Fossa Hemangioblastoma.

Hemangioblastoma (HB) is a rare, highly vascularized, and benign central nervous system (CNS) tumor. This vascularity is due to a high degree of signaling by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Consequently, anti-VEGF agents, such as bevacizumab, have been postulated and shown in a few cases to be effective in treating these tumors when surgical therapy is not feasible.

Early neurologic deterioration with symptomatic isolated internal carotid artery occlusion: a cohort study, systematic review, and meta-analysis.

Background: Acute endovascular revascularization for isolated internal carotid occlusion without tandem intracranial occlusion has been proposed to prevent early neurologic deterioration (END) and improve outcome, but has not been shown to be more effective than medical therapy. We aimed to evaluate prognosis with initial medical therapy alone, and also performed a systematic review to put these results in a broader context.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients admitted over a 2-year period with acute stroke/TIA due to isolated internal carotid artery occlusion.

Patients with chronic migraine (CM) face enormous barriers in accessing care and in receiving an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. This article reviews the following: epidemiology, definition, pathophysiology, medication overuse, and acute and preventive treatment.

Discovery of Ervogastat (PF-06865571): A Potent and Selective Inhibitor of Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase 2 for the Treatment of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis.

Discovery efforts leading to the identification of ervogastat (PF-06865571), a systemically acting diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT2) inhibitor that has advanced into clinical trials for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with liver fibrosis, are described herein. Ervogastat is a first-in-class DGAT2 inhibitor that addressed potential development risks of the prototype liver-targeted DGAT2 inhibitor PF-06427878. Key design elements that culminated in the discovery of ervogastat are (1) replacement of the metabolically labile motif with a 3,5-disubstituted pyridine system, which addressed potential safety risks arising from a cytochrome P450-mediated -dearylation of PF-06427878 to a reactive quinone metabolite precursor, and (2) modifications of the amide group to a 3-THF group, guided by metabolite identification studies coupled with property-based drug design.

Extended effects of a wearable sensory prosthesis on gait, balance function and falls after 26 weeks of use in persons with peripheral neuropathy and high fall risk-The walk2Wellness trial.

Background: We recently reported that individuals with impaired plantar sensation and high fall risk due to sensory peripheral neuropathy (PN) improved gait and balance function following 10 weeks of use of Walkasins, a wearable lower limb sensory prosthesis that provides directional specific mechanical tactile stimuli related to plantar pressure measurements during standing and walking (RxFunction Inc., Eden Prairie, MN, United States). Here, we report 26-week outcomes and compare pre- and in-study fall rates.

Extracellular Matrix Modulates Outgrowth Dynamics in Ovarian Cancer.

Ovarian carcinoma (OC) forms outgrowths that extend from the outer surface of an afflicted organ into the peritoneum. OC outgrowth formation is poorly understood due to the limited availability of cell culture models examining the behavior of cells that form outgrowths. Prompted by immunochemical evaluation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components in human tissues, laminin and collagen-rich ECM-reconstituted cell culture models amenable to studies of cell clusters that can form outgrowths are developed.

A Case Report of Herpes Simplex-1 Viral Encephalitis Complicated by Hemorrhagic Conversion.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis is the most common cause of nonendemic sporadic encephalitis in the United States. Treatment with acyclovir has been proven to reduce mortality by 50%. Antiviral therapy should be initiated immediately in patients with clinical suspicion of viral encephalitis and should not be delayed by serological confirmation of the diagnosis.

Synthesis of Deuterated Heterocycles with MeNCD(OMe) and Evaluation of the Products for Metabolism by Aldehyde Oxidase.

The metabolic oxidation of drug-like small molecules by aldehyde oxidase (AO) has commonly been mitigated through the incorporation of deuterium at the oxidation site. We report that dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal and related compounds undergo rapid CH to CD isotopic exchange upon exposure to methanol- and similar deuterated alcohols. This isotopic exchange process can be used to synthesize MeNCD(OMe) and has significant implications for the use of MeNCD(OMe) in the synthesis of specifically deuterium-labeled compounds.

Artery of Davidoff and Schechter: A Large Angiographic Case Series of Dural AV Fistulas.

The artery of Davidoff and Schechter (ADS) is the only meningeal branch of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA), supplying the medial tentorial margin and posterior portions of the falx. Given its small size, it is rarely identified on angiographic studies, unless enlarged in pathologies such as dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) or vascularized masses. This artery was first described by Wollschlaeger and Wollschlaeger in 1965, and to date, only a few reports have described its significance.

Aortic arch anomalies, embryology and their relevance in neuro-interventional surgery and stroke: A review.

Background: Congenital aortic arch anomalies are commonly encountered during neurointerventional procedures. While some anomalies are identified at an early age, many are incidentally discovered later in adulthood during endovascular evaluations or interventions. Proper understanding of the normal arch anatomy and its variants is pivotal to safely navigate normal aortic arch branches and to negotiate the catheter through anomalies during neurointerventional procedures.

Severe peripartum cardiomyopathy complicated by COVID-19 infection and small intestinal obstruction.

COVID-19 infection can be a possible trigger for peripartum cardiomyopathy. Multidisciplinary teamwork was crucial for the favorable outcome in our patient. Small bowel strangulation is a rare complication post-cesarean section.
