Article Synopsis
  • Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can indicate cancer recurrence and were studied in patients with large hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) undergoing preoperative transarterial embolization (TAE).
  • The study analyzed blood samples for CTCs and specific miRNA levels before and after TAE to understand their impact on oncological outcomes.
  • Results showed varied CTC presence post-surgery, with those who cleared CTCs having better survival, suggesting CTC clearance could be a useful prognostic marker for HCC.

Surgical resection stands as the preeminent therapeutic approach for both primary hepatocellular carcinoma and metastatic liver malignancies. Its efficacy is contingent upon the attainment of a comprehensive excision while ensuring a sufficient future liver remnant (FLR). However, post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) remains a significant challenge, particularly in patients with preexisting liver disease.

Article Synopsis
  • - PRRT, specifically using Lu-177 DOTATATE, shows promising results for treating refractory and recurrent meningiomas, a type of brain tumor with limited therapies.
  • - In a study of eight patients, the median time to progression post-PRRT was 8.9 months, with seven patients maintaining stable disease and only one showing progression after treatment.
  • - The intra-arterial (IA) delivery method provided better dose delivery compared to intravenous (IV) administration, making IA a recommended approach for such therapies.

Central nervous system (CNS) may be predisposed to devastating complications in cancer patients which may add to morbidity and mortality in this group. Majority of the complications are vascular in nature due to the altered coagulation profile and pro-inflammatory state in these patients. However, there are a host of other conditions which may affect the clinical course of these patients including metabolic and toxic encephalopathies, infections, and paraneoplastic syndromes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the outcomes of children with hepatoblastoma (HB) in India from 2013 to 2020, highlighting a significant portion (74%) of patients being classified as high risk.
  • Standard-risk patients had outstanding survival rates, with 3-year event-free survival (EFS) at 96% and overall survival (OS) at 100%, while high-risk patients showed poorer outcomes (3-year EFS: 56%, OS: 66%).
  • Monitoring serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels during treatment proved to be a useful predictor of outcomes, indicating that a reduction greater than 90% after chemotherapy was associated with better survival rates.

Fat necrosis of the breast is a benign non-suppurative inflammation of the adipose tissue and often mimics breast cancers, posing a diagnostic challenge for the clinician and radiologist. It has a myriad of appearances on different imaging techniques, ranging from the pathognomic oil cyst and benign dystrophic calcifications to indeterminate focal asymmetries, architectural distortions, and masses. A combination of different modalities can assist a radiologist in reaching a logical conclusion to avoid unnecessary interventions.

A 12 year old boy with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) presenting with bilateral pitting pedal edema and abdominal distension after about 41 months of imatinib therapy and was diagnosed to have retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) based on imaging and biopsy findings. He was found to have bilateral hydroureteronephrosis needing double-J stenting to the more severely affected right ureter. Imatinib was briefly interrupted and restarted later due to rising transcript levels and unavailability of other alternatives at that time which was later substituted by dasatinib once generic versions became available.
