The soluble form of major histocompatibility complex class I-related chain A (MICA) is released from the surface of tumor cells of epithelial origin. Although MICA expressed on the cell surface stimulates the immunoreceptor natural killer (NK) group 2, member D (NKG2D), the secreted form downregulates NKG2D activity, thus allowing the tumor to escape immunosurveillance by NKG2D-expressing cells. Background: Our purpose was to evaluate the metabolism of bile acids in the fetus by analyzing the bile acid composition of meconium of preterm (less than 30 weeks' gestational age) and full-term infants and comparing the results with the bile acid composition of feces of preterm and full-term infants 6 days after delivery.

Methods: The concentrations of individual bile acids were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after solvolysis and hydrolysis of bile acid conjugates.

The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of the isoflurane-anesthetized dog model for detecting the potential for QT interval prolongation by human pharmaceuticals. The effects of 10 positive compounds with torsadogenic potential, 8 negative compounds with little torsadogenic potential, and dl-sotalol as a common positive compound were evaluated in 5 facilities in accordance with the common protocol approved by QT PRODACT. Each test compound was cumulatively infused into male beagle dogs anesthetized with isoflurane.

We previously reported that mice lacking bombesin receptor subtype-3 (BRS-3) exhibit mild late-onset obesity and glucose intolerance [Nature 390 (1997) 160]. To examine the mechanism by which glucose intolerance is developed in these mice, we studied insulin release and proinsulin biosynthesis in isolated pancreatic islets and glucose uptake and facilitative glucose transporter (GLUT)-4 translocation in adipose tissues. Although islet insulin contents and the size and number of islets of Langerhans in BRS-3-deficient mice decreased, there was no difference in glucose-stimulated insulin release and proinsulin biosynthesis between BRS-3-deficient and wild-type control mice.

Rat cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractants (CINCs), which belong to the interleukin-8 family, are known to be induced by treatment with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
