It is well-known that Japan was the third country, after the United States and the United Kingdom, to become self-sufficient in penicillin manufacture, as early as 1948. Besides the production of penicillin, much effort was made nationwide in exploratory research on anti-infective, anti-cancer, and agricultural antibiotics, and also other bioactive microbial products. One can list upwards of 117 useful antibiotics and related agents of Japanese origin, and among them, 41 agents have been licensed out around the world.

Pathogenic mechanisms of mycoplasmal pneumonia is not fully understood at present though some kind of cell-mediated hypersensitivity is closely related to its mechanisms. Though eosinophilia in peripheral blood are sometimes revealed in patient with mycoplasmal pneumonia, it is not unclear whether eosinophils related to its pathogenesis, or not. We evaluated the clinical significance of ECP in serum and BAL fluid in patients with mycoplasmal pneumonia.

Objective: The aims of this randomized, controlled study were to investigate the efficacy and safety of long-term monotherapy with the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist goserelin acetate compared with both short- and long-term combined androgen blockade.

Methods: Patients with advanced prostate cancer (n = 371) were randomized to treatment with goserelin acetate alone or a combination of goserelin acetate plus either long-term or short-term antiandrogen (chlormadinone acetate) or short-term estrogen (diethylstilbestrol diphosphate).

Results: There were no significant differences between the treatment groups with respect to objective progression, overall survival or disease-specific survival.

Background: Experimental autoimmune orchitis (EAO) has been studied as an animal model for human immunological male infertility. We have already reported the induction of contralateral EAO ("sympathetic orchitis") by unilateral testicular injury in mice. In this paper, we report the induction of autoimmune infertility in such mice as well as EAO.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical usefulness of nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP22) as a new urinary marker for the screening of urothelial cancer in patients with microscopic hematuria, especially in comparison with that of voided urine cytology.

Methods: Patients with microscopic hematuria detected at a health examination, who were advised by a consulted urologist to have a cystoscopical examination, were asked to enter this study. Urine samples were collected before cystoscopy and divided into two portions for NMP22 test and voided urine cytology.

Background: In addition to its role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3; 1,25-D3) demonstrates multiple effects on cell proliferation/differentiation by expressing major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). It has recently been reported that 1,25-D3 inhibits the growth of prostatic cancer (PCa) cells. In this study we examined the effect of 1,25-D3 on both the growth and expression of HLA-ABC, HLA-DR and ICAM-1 antigens in PCa cells.

Purpose: We investigated whether verapamil (VR), a known chemosensitizing agent of P-glycoprotein-mediated multidrug resistance, could enhance the preventative effect of doxorubicin (Adriamycin, ADM) on both intravesical recurrence and disease progression after transurethral resection (TUR) of superficial bladder cancer.

Methods: The patients were randomized into two groups: one group received an intravesical instillation of ADM (30 mg) plus VR (15 mg) after TUR of superficial bladder cancer (19 times over 1 year), and the other group received ADM alone on the same treatment schedule. The nonrecurrence rate, the incidence of disease progression at the first recurrence and the side effects were compared over a median follow-up of 38.

Three newly synthesized imidazothiazole derivatives (N276-12, N276-14, N276-17) were examined regarding their ability and mechanism as a chemosensitizing agent against multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1)-mediated and multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP)-mediated MDR. All three N276 compounds almost completely reversed the acquired resistance to vincristine (VCR), vinblastine (VBL), and doxorubicin (DXR) in MDR1-overexpressing human cancer cell lines (KB/VJ300 and T24/VCR). Their reversal effect against acquired resistance to VCR, DXR, and etoposide (VP16) was partial but clearly observed in the cell line expressing MRP (KB/VP4).
