Case Presentation: A 67-year-old female was referred to our urology department for a left ureteral tumor.

Marine Protected Areas That Preserve Trophic Cascades Promote Resilience of Kelp Forests to Marine Heatwaves.

Under accelerating threats from climate-change impacts, marine protected areas (MPAs) have been proposed as climate-adaptation tools to enhance the resilience of marine ecosystems. Yet, debate persists as to whether and how MPAs may promote resilience to climate shocks. Here, we use 38 years of satellite-derived kelp cover to empirically test whether a network of 58 temperate coastal MPAs in Central and Southern California enhances the resistance of kelp forest ecosystems to, and their recovery from, the unprecedented 2014-2016 marine heatwave regime that occurred in the region.

Cold plasma irradiation of chitosan: A straight pathway to selective antitumor therapy.

Plasma-activated chitosan (PAC) colloids for cancer treatment were obtained by using the cold atmospheric plasma technique. Chitosan solutions were irradiated by plasma ignited in argon gas and in a mixture of argon with nitrogen and oxygen gases in certain ratios. The structural modifications of chitosan and the chemical species generated in plasma were investigated by EPR, LC-MS/MS, XRD, DLS, and TGA methods.

Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) are said to be useful procedures for gallstone pancreatitis. However, there have been few reports on a large number of patients to whom they were used. The clinical usefulness of ERCP and EST is herein examined retrospectively.

Usefulness of Elobixibat in Patients With Chronic Constipation After Cholecystectomy.

Background: There have been reports that elobixibat improves bowel movements in patients with chronic constipation. However, no studies have been conducted to date to examine bowel movements after the administration of elobixibat in patients with chronic constipation in terms of the presence or absence of the gallbladder. In this study, we examined the frequency of bowel movements and stool forms in patients with gallbladders and post-cholecystectomy patients before and after the administration of elobixibat for chronic constipation.

Rutile TiO-Supported Pt Nanoparticle Catalysts for the Low-Temperature Oxidation of Ethane to Ethanol.

Structure-function relationships of supported metal nanoparticle catalysts in the CO-assisted oxidation of ethane to ethanol were investigated. A rutile TiO-supported Pt nanoparticle catalyst exhibited the highest ethanol production rate and selectivity. During the reaction, sequential changes in the geometric/electronic states and the particle size of the Pt nanoparticles were observed.

Applying Human Factors and Systems Simulation Methods to Inform a Multimillion-Dollar Healthcare Decision.

Purpose: This article describes a case study of a collaborative human factors (HF) and systems-focused simulation (SFS) project to evaluate potential patient and staff safety risks associated with a multimillion-dollar design and construction decision.

Background: The combined integration of HF and SFS methods in healthcare related to testing and informing the design of new environments and processes is underutilized. Few realize the effectiveness of this integration in healthcare to reduce risk and improve decision-making, safety, design, efficiency, patient experience, and outcomes.

Natural history of asymptomatic gallbladder stones in clinic without beds: A long-term prognosis over 10 years.

Background: Several studies have explored the long-term prognosis of patients with asymptomatic gallbladder stones. These reports were primarily conducted in facilities equipped with beds for addressing symptomatic cases.

Aim: To report the long-term prognosis of patients with asymptomatic gallbladder stones in clinics without bed facilities.

New-onset minimal change disease following the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

We report the case of nephrotic syndrome after COVID-19 vaccination. The patient was a man in his 30s with no comorbidities other than atopic dermatitis. Over the course of 2 weeks after the first COVID-19 vaccination, systemic oedema gradually appeared.

System Configuration Evaluation for a Province-Wide Clinical Information System Using the eSafety Checklist.

Background: According to Digital Health Canada 2013 eSafety Guidelines, an estimated one-third of patient safety incidents following implementation of clinical information systems (CISs) are technology-related. An eSafety checklist was previously developed to improve CIS safety by providing a comprehensive listing of system-agnostic, evidence-based configuration recommendations.

Objectives: We sought to use the checklist to support safe initial configuration of a provincial system-wide CIS (Alberta, Canada), referred to as Connect Care.

Treatment strategy changes for inflammatory bowel diseases in biologic era: results from a multicenter cohort in Japan, Far East 1000.

Many molecular targeted agents, including biologics, have emerged for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but their high prices have prevented their widespread use. This study aimed to reveal the changes in patient characteristics and the therapeutic strategies of IBD before and after the implementation of biologics in Japan, where the unique health insurance system allows patients with IBD and physicians to select drugs with minimum patient expenses. The analysis was performed using a prospective cohort, including IBD expert and nonexpert hospitals in Japan.

A woman in her 20s presented to our clinic with a lower gastrointestinal infection. When we administered intravenous antibacterial and vitamin infusions, she developed anaphylaxis. We performed skin tests to investigate the cause, and an intradermal test was positive for a 1% intravenous vitamin complex.

Determining optimal length of coracoid graft in the modified Bristow procedure for anterior shoulder instability: A three-dimensional finite element analysis.

Background: There is a lack of consensus concerning the coracoid graft length in the modified Bristow procedure.

Objective: We attempted to determine the optimal graft length using the three-dimensional finite element method.

Methods: In a shoulder model with a 25% anterior glenoid defect, a coracoid graft of varying lengths (5, 10, 15, and 20 mm) was fixed using a half-threaded screw.

Insulin Sensitivity Initially Worsens but Later Improves With Aging in Male C57BL/6N Mice.

Aging is believed to induce insulin resistance in humans. However, when and how insulin sensitivity changes with aging remains unclear in both humans and mice. In this study, groups of male C57BL/6N mice at 9-19 weeks (young), 34-67 weeks (mature adult), 84-85 weeks (presenile), and 107-121 weeks of age underwent hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp studies with somatostatin infusion under awake and nonrestrained conditions.

Clinicoradiological course of abemaciclib-induced pneumonitis with histology findings.

A woman in her late 40s presented with multiple abnormal shadows on high-resolution CT (HRCT), was treated with abemaciclib for recurrent right breast cancer post-surgery and chemoradiation therapy. During the 10-month chemotherapy, HRCT revealed a recurrent pattern of a partly appearing and disappearing organising pneumonia pattern without clinical symptoms. Bronchoalveolar lavage analysis revealed lymphocytosis, while transbronchial lung biopsy revealed alveolitis with epithelial cell injury.

Prostate Cancer Associated with Minimal Change Disease: A Case Report.

Introduction: Minimal change disease (MCD), a common cause of primary nephrotic syndrome that accounts for 10%-15% of all primary nephrotic syndrome cases in adults, is frequently associated with malignant lymphoma. However, studies on MCD associated with prostate cancer are scarce.

Case Presentation: A 73-year-old male with prostate cancer was referred to our department with hypoalbuminemia and severe proteinuria while waiting for prostatectomy.

The long-term effect of biologics in patients with ulcerative colitis emerging from a large Japanese cohort.

To gain a better understanding of the effects of biologics, we evaluated clinical outcomes in patients with moderate to severe exacerbations of ulcerative colitis (UC). This retrospective, multicenter study retrieved the entire clinical courses of UC patients who began treatments between 2004 and 2018. All exacerbations and clinical parameters, including treatment details for exacerbations and both remission and re-exacerbation dates, were identified during the observation period.

Discovering marine biodiversity in the 21st century.

We review the current knowledge of the biodiversity of the ocean as well as the levels of decline and threat for species and habitats. The lack of understanding of the distribution of life in the ocean is identified as a significant barrier to restoring its biodiversity and health. We explore why the science of taxonomy has failed to deliver knowledge of what species are present in the ocean, how they are distributed and how they are responding to global and regional to local anthropogenic pressures.

Progression of ulcerative colitis following diversion colitis.

Diversion colitis and ulcerative colitis (UC) can be caused by different mechanisms; however, several case reports have described the development of typical UC following diversion colitis. A 63-year-old man underwent Hartmann's operation following a diagnosis of perforation of a sigmoid colon diverticulum and peritonitis. Stoma closure was performed 4 months later, and the portion of the sigmoid colon with the diverticulum was unintentionally left as a blind end.

Primary central nervous system other iatrogenic immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders presenting as extraosseous plasmacytoma with a progressive clinical course: A case report and literature review.

Other iatrogenic immunosuppressive-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (OIIA-LPDs) rarely occur in the central nervous system (CNS). Additionally, they almost always present as lymphoma and withdrawal by cessation of immunosuppressive treatment. We report a case of primary CNS OIIA-LPD that presented as extraosseous plasmacytoma (EP) with a progressive clinical course in spite of immunosuppressive treatment cessation.

Habitat Protection Indexes - new monitoring measures for the conservation of coastal and marine habitats.

A worldwide call to implement habitat protection aims to halt biodiversity loss. We constructed an open-source, standardized, and reproducible workflow that calculates two indexes to monitor the extent of coastal and marine habitats within protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures. The Local Proportion of Habitats Protected Index (LPHPI) pinpoints the jurisdictions with the greatest opportunity to expand their protected or conserved areas, while the Global Proportion of Habitats Protected Index (GPHPI) showcases which jurisdictions contribute the most area to the protection of these habitats globally.

Stabilization of radical active species in a MOF nanospace to exploit unique reaction pathways.

We synthesized a metal-organic framework (MOF) using a ligand bearing haloalkoxy chains as a radical precursor. The radicals generated in the MOF upon photoirradiation were stable even at 250 K or under an O atmosphere, despite radicals generated from the ligand decomposing at 200 K; thus, the regular arrangement of radicals effectively stabilized them. Moreover, a unique photoproduct was obtained only in the MOF, indicating that the confinement effect in the nanospace enabled a specific reaction that did not occur in the bulk state.
