Biological drugs have been used since the middle of the last century in medicine. Nowadays we are witnesses of the intensive development and wider administration of these drugs in clinical practice. Around 250 biological drugs are available and more than 350 million patients have been treated since their marketed authorization.

Ten different types of commercially available sunbed tubes have been studied using a uracil biological UV dosimeter, and three of them were analyzed in detail. Dimerization effectiveness of the tubes was measured directly, whereas efficiency of erythema induction was calculated weighting the emission spectra by the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage erythema action spectrum.

The formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) was investigated in Chinese hamster ovary cells upon exposure to either UVC, UVB, UVA or simulated sunlight (SSL). Two cell lines were used, namely AT3-2 and UVL9, the latter being deficient in nucleotide excision repair and consequently UV sensitive. For all types of radiation, including UVA, CPD were found to be the predominant lesions quantitatively.

Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) are revealed as T4 endonuclease V-sensitive sites, oxidation products at purine and pyrimidine as Fpg- and Nth-sensitive sites, and abasic sites are detected by Nfo protein from Escherichia coli. CPDs are readily detected after UVA exposure, though produced 10(3) and 10(5) times less efficiently than by UVB or UVC, respectively.
