Between 1 April 1996 and 30 June 1997, 1003 ear, nose and throat (ENT) outpatients and 340 inpatients diagnosed as having pulmonary tuberculosis were analysed for ENT manifestations of tuberculosis to determine the relationship to sputum positivity, whether any high risk factors exist for the ENT manifestations as compared to other pulmonary tuberculosis patients, and the response to anti-tubercular treatment. The commonest ENT manifestation was found to be laryngitis (seven cases), which was more common in pulmonary tuberculosis patients (five out of seven), all except one of whom were sputum negative. All of these patients were defaulters from anti-tuberculosis treatment or relapse cases, and vocal cords were the commonest site of involvement.

Objectives: To study clinical profile of the newly emerged novel strain non-O1, O139 of Vibrio cholerae, in the region of Ambajogai, District Beed of Maharashtra.
Methods: Out of 208 patients of acute gastroenteritis, 41 revealed to be positive for Vibrio cholerae by recommended method of stool examination. All the strains were sent to National Institute of Cholera and Infectious Diseases, Calcutta for confirmation.
The avoidance response to repellent odorants in Drosophila melanogaster, a response essential for survival, provides an advantageous model for studies on the genetic architecture of olfactory behavior. Transposon tagging in a highly inbred strain of flies in combination with a rapid and simple statistical behavioral assay enables the identification of not only large phenotypic effects, but also small aberrations from wild-type avoidance behavior. The recent completion of the sequence of the Drosophila genome facilitates the molecular characterization of transposon-tagged genes and correlation between gene expression and behavior in smell-impaired (smi) mutant lines.

Objective: This study was undertaken to determine whether surgery for advanced pelvic organ prolapse corrects the voiding dysfunction commonly associated with this condition and if so to evaluate the ability of preoperative voiding studies to predict such correction.
Study Design: We reviewed the records of all women who underwent surgery at our center between January 1996 and June 1999 for stage 3 or 4 pelvic organ prolapse. Patients were included in this review if they had a postvoid residual volume of >100 mL documented by catheterization on at least 2 occasions, had no normal postvoid residual volumes documented, and had undergone preoperative multichannel urodynamic testing that included an instrumented voiding study.

Recombinant Escherichia coli (pATBX 1.8) secreting extracellular xylanase was used as a model system to study the application of an aqueous two phase system for extractive cultivation. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) bound to vascular endothelial cells hydrolyses triglycerides in plasma lipoproteins. To explore the role of LPL in atherogenesis, the effect of LPL-mediated lipolysis of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) on monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells was examined.
