JAK2 mutations across a spectrum of venous thrombosis cases.

The JAK2(V617F)mutation is recurrent in polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia, which are myeloproliferative neoplasms frequently associated with arterial and venous thromboembolism. It has also been reported as a marker for occult myeloproliferative disorder (MPD) in patients with splanchnic venous thrombosis. Limited data are available regarding the prevalence of the JAK2(V617F) mutation in patients with thrombosis outside the splanchnic region.

Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of fetal persistent urogenital sinus with congenital hydrocolpos.

We report a case of persistent urogenital sinus with hydrocolpos and associated renal anomalies diagnosed prenatally at 30 weeks' gestation. The prenatal findings were confirmed on postnatal ultrasonography and genitogram with voiding urethrogram. The imaging features and a review of the literature are discussed.

Human beta-defensin 9 (HBD9) has previously been shown to be downregulated during ocular surface (OS) infection or inflammation. Here, the authors aimed to study localization of HBD9 protein in different OS regions and to determine the role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), nucleotide oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors, and proinflammatory cytokines in HBD9 expression.

Bone mass of overweight affluent Indian youth and its sex-specific association with body composition.

SUMMARY: The study assessed whether overweight is associated with better bone densities in healthy youth. It was observed that overweight individuals had better BMDs at the hip but not at other sites after controlling for the bone area. Lean body mass was an important determinant of BMDs in men, but both lean and fat mass were important for BMDs in women.

Composition of weight gain during nutrition rehabilitation of severely under nourished children in a hospital based study from India.

Concerns are raised that rapid catch up growth during nutrition rehabilitation of severely malnourished children may be associated with disproportionately higher amounts of body fat deposition. This study examined the composition of weight gain in severely undernourished children who underwent nutrition rehabilitation in a hospital from India. Body composition of 80 severely malnourished children (age 6-60 months) was assessed using skin-fold thickness measurements on admission and after 1 month of supplementary feeding.
