Up to the age of ultrasonography the cholelithiasis diagnostics has been based on the radiologic examination that is on the peroral cholecystography introduced by Graham and Cole in 1924 as well as on the intravenous cholangiography performed for first time by Langecker and Harwat in 1952. During last years the cholelithiasis diagnostics is more and more frequently based on the ultrasonographic examination. The purpose of this study was in evaluation of ultrasonography in detection of cholelithiasis.

A comparison of the advantages, disadvantages, and costs of each method is presented in Table 1. Barrier methods of contraception offer adolescents protection against both pregnancy and STDs, but innovative approaches are needed to enhance availability and acceptability. Condom use in conjunction with a vaginal spermicide would provide optimal protection.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multiclinic trial evaluated arbaprostil [15(R)-15 methyl prostaglandin E2] for the treatment of acute gastric ulcer, achieving an overall enrollment of 124 patients (of which 113 were considered evaluable). This 6-wk trial used an arbaprostil dose of 10 micrograms q.i.

Three hundred and twenty-two patients with locally advanced (stages III and IVA) and disseminated (stage IVB) gastric cancer were included in a randomized trial to assess the effect of immunochemotherapy (BCG and 5-fluorouracil,5-FU). The survival of patients receiving chemoimmunotherapy was compared to chemotherapy (5-FU) or no further treatment (control) groups. Patients with stage III underwent radical surgery (subtotal or total resection), stage IVA palliative resection, while explorative laparotomy or bypass was performed in stage IVB.

Increased adolescent sexual activity in the past decade has resulted in corresponding increases in pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, as well as a changing spectrum of sexually transmitted diseases. Contraceptive use in this age group remains limited and is subject to developmental, peer, family, and cultural influences. The most appropriate contraceptive methods may differ among adolescents when compared with older parous women based upon such factors as efficacy, availability, cost, side effects, reversibility, and the need for preplanning.

Physicians who treat teenagers are often unclear about the teenagers' legal rights and their own legal responsibility and liability. While laws may vary from state to state, certain doctrines are uniformly applicable: confidentiality, emergency treatment, and the right of the "mature minor" to consent to his or her own medical treatment. In this article, the laws pertaining to adolescent health care in the six New England states are reviewed.

Frequency difference limens (DLs) were measured in DBA/2 and C57BL/6 mice using an avoidance conditioning procedure and were viewed in relation to previously obtained neurophysiological data. DRA mice had significantly smaller DLs at 12 and 16 kHz, despite progressive sensorineural hearing loss and disrupted tonotopic organization characteristic of this strain. C57 mice had smaller DLs at 8 kHz.

The acoustic startle response (ASR) was elicited with tone pips in sensorineural hearing-impaired DBA/2 mice and in non-impaired C57BL/6 mice. The influence of stimulus frequency and intensity on ASR amplitude varied as a function of both strain and age. Previous neurophysiological findings indicate that ASR amplitude is correlated with the proportion of neurons in the cochlear nucleus and inferior colliculus that respond to the ASR stimulus frequencies and to the excitability of neurons in these structures.

Infants, preschoolers, and adults were tested to determine the shortest time interval at which they would respond to the precedence effect--an auditory phenomenon produced by presenting the same sound through 2 loudspeakers with the input to 1 loudspeaker delayed relative to the other. The delayed sound is not localized at its source until time delays between onsets are lengthened beyond a critical limit, or threshold. Thresholds for the precedence effect were defined as the delay interval below which listeners respond only to the leading loudspeaker and above which they respond to both loudspeakers.

A multicenter study was conducted on 173 patients with active, endoscopically proven duodenal ulcers (158 men, 15 women). They were randomly assigned, in a double-blind manner, to two groups: those receiving placebo capsules (91 patients) and those receiving capsules containing 100 microgram of 15(R)-15-methyl prostaglandin E2 (arbaprostil) (82 patients). Each drug was ingested four times a day (1 h before meals and at bedtime) for 28 days.
