A COMPLICATED CASE OF STRONGYLOIDIASIS PRESENTING WITH INTESTINAL LYMPHADENOPATHY OBSTRUCTION: MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode, which can cause complications in immune-compromised hosts. We present a rare case of intestinal obstruction due to mesenteric lymphadenopathy, a complication due to strongyloidiasis, developing in a male subject chronically receiving corticosteroid for pemphigus vulgaris. DNA was extracted from biopsied lymph nodes containing nematode larvae and PCR amplified using primers specific for S.

Modulation of antibody responses against Gnathostoma spinigerum in mice immunized with crude antigen formulated in CpG oligonucleotide and montanide ISA720.

This study aimed to investigate the antibody responses in mice immunized with Gnathostoma spinigerum crude antigen (GsAg) incorporated with the combined adjuvant, a synthetic oligonucleotide containing unmethylated CpG motif (CpG ODN 1826) and a stable water in oil emulsion (Montanide ISA720). Mice immunized with GsAg and combined adjuvant produced all antibody classes and subclasses to GsAg except IgA. IgG2a/2b/3 but not IgG1 subclasses were enhanced by immunization with CpG ODN 1826 when compared with the control groups immunized with non-CpG ODN and Montanide ISA or only with Montanide ISA, suggesting a biased induction of a Th1-type response by CpG ODN.

PCR-RFLP and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Helicobacter pylori isolated from antrum and corpus of dyspeptic patients in Thailand.

The study determined the genetic heterogeneity of Helicobacter pylori isolates from antrum and corpus of the same dyspeptic patients in a Thai population and determined the relationship between the antimicrobial susceptibility (AS) profile (antibiogram) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) pattern. One hundred and nineteen H. pylori isolates comprising 7 single and 56 paired antrum and corpus isolates obtained by gastric biopsy from 160 dyspeptic patients were analyzed.

Melioidosis pericarditis mimicking tuberculous pericarditis.

Cases of melioidosis (N = 2) and tuberculous pericarditis (N = 33) during 1996-2006 were reviewed. Clinical presentations were similar, but pericardial pathological findings were not. Nine of 12 patients with melioidosis required pericardectomy.

Glutathione S-transferase (GSTM1 and GSTT1) polymorphisms in cervical cancer in Northeastern Thailand.

To evaluate the relationships between genetic polymorphisms of the GSTs (GSTM1 and GSTT1) and cervical cancer, the null genotype of each gene was studied in squamous cell cervical cancer (SCCA) patients (n=90) and controls (n=94) in Northeast Thailand. The prevalence of the GSTM1-null genotype in the controls and SCCA patients was 59.6% and 60.

Mycotic aneurysm in Northeast Thailand: the importance of Burkholderia pseudomallei as a causative pathogen.

Forty cases of mycotic aneurysm that occurred during the period 1993-2007 were reviewed. The most common causative pathogen was Burkholderia pseudomallei (17 cases; 42.5%).

Visual inspection with acetic acid test qualities in a secondary setting.

Aim: To evaluate the visual inspection using acetic acid (VIA) test qualities in a secondary (follow-up) setting, 1 year after cryotherapy treatment performed as part of the Safety, Acceptability and Feasibility demonstration project designed to evaluate the safety, acceptability and feasibility of VIA. An immediate offer of cryotherapy was made to those who test positive and are eligible for treatment.

Methods: At 1 year after cryotherapy, 648 women received both a secondary (follow-up) VIA test by nurse-providers, and colposcopy with biopsy, if indicated, by trained physician colposcopists at a referral hospital.

Fine needle aspiration in a malignant lymphoepithelial lesion: a case report.

Background: A primary malignant lymphoepithelial lesion (MLEL) of the salivary gland is a rare tumor. Though histologic morphology of this lesion is well documented, the cytologic findings regarding fine needle aspiration (FNA) are not yet well described.

Case: A 56-year-old Thai woman from Udonthanee was admitted to Srinagarind Hospital with a 2-year history of a painless mass in the left parotid gland.

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ): a report of two cases.

Osteonecrosis of thejaw (ONJ) is strongly associated with the use of aminobisphosphonates. Herein, the authors report two cases of ONJ after intravenous bisphosphonate therapy including clinical presentations, X-ray, and pathological findings. Since there is no definite treatment for ONJ, the focus should be on prevention with a dental evaluation for all patients before starting bisphosphonates.

The endoscopic-pathologic findings in intestinal capillariais: a case report.

A 27-year-old Thai man presented with chronic watery diarrhea for 2 years. The diagnosis of capillariasis was made by enteroscopy after negative repeated stool tests. Here, the authors reported the first case of abnormal endoscopic finding of intestinal capillariasis.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for serodiagnosis of Helicobacter pylori in dyspeptic patients and volunteer blood donors.

Case report: acquired progressive muscular hypertrophy and trichinosis.

We present the case of a 49-year-old man with progressive generalized muscle hypertrophy and weakness for 3 months. Laboratory results revealed peripheral blood eosinophilia and significant elevation of creatinine kinase level. Histologic findings from muscle biopsy demonstrated a nurse cell-larva complex.

Rituximab combined with CHOP for successful treatment of aggressive recurrent, pediatric B-cell large cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

This report is the first to describe the successful treatment of a 14-year-old boy with aggressive recurrent, CD20-positive, B-cell large cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The patient responded to three 4-week courses of rituximab (MabThera) given every 6 months and six cycles of CHOP given every 3 weeks in addition to a modified BFM 86 protocol. Transient neutropenia and lymphopenia occurred but with no clinical significance.

Clinical value of biliary alkaline phosphatase in non-jaundiced cholangiocarcinoma.

Purpose: Measurement of the activities of alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme has been used for the identification and monitoring of diseases associated with the isoenzyme. Biliary alkaline phosphatase (BALP), an isoform of liver-ALP, has been found in the serum of patients with biliary obstruction and metastatic liver cancer. This study compared the BALP isoform in the serum of patients with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) with that of non-jaundiced benign hepatobiliary disease, other cancers, and healthy persons.

The antiulcerative effect of Thai Musa species in rats.

Bananas are reported to have an antipeptic ulcer effect, however, the beneficial action can be affected by many factors, including the variety. Our study was undertaken to investigate the antipeptic ulcer effect of the Palo and Horn varieties of banana, grown and consumed in the northeast of Thailand. Indomethacin and acetic acid-induced gastric lesions in rats were employed as models of peptic ulcer disease.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of metastatic transitional cell carcinoma to the liver.

A 63-year-old man presented with a three-month history of painless hematuria. A cystoscopic examination revealed a diffuse small nodulopapillary growth of the bladder mucosa. Biopsy resulted in the diagnosis of a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), grade II.

Molar pregnancy--associated ectopic decidua: report of a case and review of the literature.

Ectopic or extrauterine decidual transformation is regularly associated with pregnancy. This phenomenon has been observed most often in the ovary and cervix. Sporadic reports have documented decidua formation of peritoneal surfaces, lymph nodes and other organs in pelvic and abdominal cavity.

Tuberculous brain abscess.

We report a case of tuberculous brain abscess. He developed neurological symptoms inspite of 6 months treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. His condition improved after surgical excision of abscess and short-course chemotherapy.
