There is growing recognition that the hypoxic regions of the ocean are also becoming more acidic due to increasing levels of global carbon dioxide emissions. The impact of water acidification on marine life is largely unknown, as most previous studies have not taken into account the effects of hypoxia, which may affect how organisms respond to low pH levels. The circulating hemocytes of cultivated marine mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were investigated using light microscopy and flow cytometry. In mussels two cell types, granulocytes and agranulocytes, were identified based on the existence of two subpopulations of cells differing by size and granularity level on light-scattered plots. Light microscopic observation confirmed the presence of cells with cytoplasmic granules and cells without granulation in hemolymph of mussels.

Effect of nine new derivatives of dihydroquercetin (taxifolin) on the viability of cultivated normal and tumor cells, their antioxidant activity, and interconnection of the antioxidant activity with the chemical structure have been studied. Among these dihydroquercetin derivatives, the maximum antiproliferative activity on the model of rat fibroblast culture exhibited KN-2, KN-4, KN-7, and KN-8 compounds, while KN-7 and KN-8 compounds also showed maximum activity on the model of MCF-7 tumor cell culture (human breast cancer). The maximum general antioxidant activity was observed for the native dihydroquercetin and KN-8 compound.

Stability of levorin isolated and purified with the use of ionole phosphorus organic analogs having in their structure phosphate, phosphonate and phosphonite groups was studied. The compound having in its structure (in addition to tertiary butyl substitutes) the phosphonite group with the P-H bond increasing the compound antioxidant property was shown to have the highest stabilizing effect. The results of the study made it possible to recommend the use of the space complicated phenols with the structure fragments of the P-H bond type as antioxidants in production of levorin.

The authors studied the membrane-stabilizing effect of two water-soluble preparations of antioxidants, analogues of ionol, in thermal burns. It was found that both preparations increase somewhat to a different degree the resistance of the red cell membranes to peroxide compounds and reduce hemolysis which is very characteristic of the first minutes and hours after the thermal trauma. The preparations alter the electrical properties of the red cells and affect the activity of phospholipases in blood plasma.

The synthetic liposoluble antioxidant BAT. 120 mg/kg, was found to produce markedly protective effects in a rat model of coronary occlusive myocardial infarction, whereas the water soluble BAT analogue, 4-Oxy-3,5-ditretbutylphenyl phosphonic acid sodiate (SFN-6), 100 mg/kg, displayed no protective effects. The natural antioxidant beta-carotene capable of displaying antioxidative activity at low partial O2 pressures was shown to reduce the size of postinfarct scar by 34% when given in a dose of 20 mg/kg.
